Star Wars RPG Beta: Are they serious?

On the matter of PDFs...

As I understood it from WotC's discussions of them relative to its own Star Wars RPG, Lucasfilm considers PDFs to be a software release and thus explicitly not a part of any agreement to release physical games and rpgs.

While paying for a beta may seem wasteful to some people, from another point of view it can just be looked at as an opportunity to start playing and enjoying the game early.

That seems strange. Unless your source is someone within FFG or Lucasfilm Licensing, I'd take that with a grain of salt. FFG already has bought the license. I would think it's up to them whether they want to cut into their own profits or not by releasing a free beta test.
I do know the person has a lot of contact with key people at several gaming companies which is why I give him some credence. However, I did put a caveat, "if true", in my edit when I mentioned that it could be LucasArts making the decision, because he did not tell me his source or point me to a quote from FFG.

Part of me is tempted to pick this up, so long as I'd also get the release copy when it's printed as part of the price (or $30 off the release package if the thing's going to come with special dice and such).
That is the thing. There is no mention of a coupon or getting a release copy. As for the special dice, you receive stickers that you can place on your existing dice.

I'm really intrigued as to what they've done. I've not played the Warhammer thing, as the universe doesn't really appeal to me outside of RTS games.
They are not using the Warhammer system (a good decision, in my opinion). They are using the system (or something similar) to their Lord of the Ring Game, "The One Ring".

The rest of me is satisfied with Saga Edition. For my money, it's the best D20 derivative I've played.

It is my favorite d20 derivative after True20 (setting aside M&M as it is not class/level and more a rebuild from the ground up). The funny things is that I don't like it for Star Wars, but would have loved to have seen it used as the basis for 4e or 5e.

Paying for a beta game is just weird unless you're a collector. If they have to charge $30 for it it would be smart to include a coupon for $30 off the final product for a bunch of different reasons.

I have no problem buying into the beta as long as when I buy at beta status I get the final product when its released for free. If it follows other beta formats and my opinion and thoughts actually contribute to the final product then great, but if not then I'd wait for inal release of it. That goes for any beta. As far as a star wars rpg I'll stick to my WEG collection, thanks. No prequel era for me.

I'm excited. :)

I see it as an opportunity, and custom dice instead of using the same, old, standard, boring dice used in just about every other RPG... I'm good with that.

I also like that they are releasing the Galaxy in stages instead of trying to cram everything into a single book. I also see the release of the three games as it's own Trilogy...and you can't do Star Wars without a good Trilogy. ;)

We start off on the fringes, away from thee core, exploring the Outer Rim. We are dealing with the underbelly of the galaxy...

Then we get recruited by the Rebel Alliance and enter the Galactic fray against the evil Empire, helping world's slip through Imperial grasp, saving lives against the machinations of the Emporer...

And finally things surge to an epic scale when you learn you might have a destiny, and a link to a mysterious mystical power and possibly could be one of the few Jedi left in the galaxy. You learn about the Sith, and as your power grows you could very well be the only hope in a galaxy ruled by the tyrannical Sith (Emperor), and you have the power to change history.

I'm stoked. :D

I'll be honest, I've got about zero interest in this game, and I'm a huge Star Wars fan (hence my avatar) and a die-hard fan of Star Wars roleplaying (the first RPG I ever played was d6 Star Wars).

I've got dozens of d6 Star Wars books, I've got every single product made for the d20 version (except for the first two issues of Star Wars Gamer magazine), hundreds of miniatures (starship and character). How many more times should I buy a game for the same setting, and splatbooks for the same places and eras?

I'll be honest, I'm having trouble mustering up the interest in buying YET ANOTHER edition of a Star Wars RPG, the same eras, the same materials re-hashed with another system.

I've been seriously considering producing a home-brewed revision of d6, I've been kicking around ideas for rebuilding the old WEG game to reflect everything else that has been revealed about the Star Wars galaxy since West End folded in '98.

FFG SW = FAIL for me (based on release model/beta for money/didn't like WHFRP).

One would think they would focus more on Old Republic to boost interest in the MMO and garner more players and have a setting with more room to flex, but I'm sure Lucas wants it to stay focused on the movies.

I just purchased the Beta. I needed to come clean and be properly flogged for being a weak minded fool :). I guess these droids aren't the ones I'm looking for...

Before I take my punishment for handing FFG my lunch money...WFRP 3E's dice mechanics are rad (the piles of stuff are a pain though). It gives me some hope to see FFG (at this early stage anyway) not going down the piles of stuff route, and limiting their madness to whacky polyhedrals and sexy dice pools.

If the final product ends up ringing hollow (or requiring me to come up with a second storage system for the components like I did with WFRP 3E)...I'll just stick to WEG. That's the nice thing about a licensed and heavily controlled IP. It comes down to whether or not to repurchase a sourcebook on Coruscant or space ships. And the more varied the game systems for Star Wars become, people will hopefully find one they love eventually. D20 hogged three releases of star wars (or 2.5 if you don't count "Revised d20"), and at least FFG isn't trying to foist another d100 system on us :)

Okay, now I willfully submit to my punishment for being a bad beta-buying *expletive deleted*
