Scotley's Carrion Crown IC Part 1 The Haunting of Harrowstone

Besharrn shakes his head and walks away from the money-grubbing old-timer and goes looking for his friends. "Now where could they have got off to," muses Besharrn as he strokes the nappy stubble that graces his jaw. "This thinking is thirsty work! I need an ale to lubricate my thinking parts." He looks around to see if he can spot a place where he might get such a beverage.

Besharrn shakes his head and walks away from the money-grubbing old-timer. He walks up behind Falco and Dannis and just stands there expectantly, as if he is a servant or footman awaiting instructions.
OOC:
They are in a tavern at the other end of town, not in the Wizard's shop...

She nods, "Bread and figs then? And would you prefer the red or the white?" The two old fellows engage in a whispered conversation, but at their advanced age they have to practically shout at each other to overcome their mutual deafness. "It's two o' them furenners. You best keep a hand to your neck Otis, they could be the one's been bleedin' things and painting the monument with blood and stuff." "You're right Furd, that little en is a shifty eyed bugger. Can't trust them halfin's or outsiders says I. Should we do our drinking somewhere's else today you think?" "Oh I don't know, might be best we stay where we can keep an eye on them rather than letting them slip up behind us later."

Vadim gazes after his comrade in consternation as Besharn . . . changes his mind? . . . about the course of the investigation and decides to wander off. The half-elf shakes his head. "My apologies, good sir. My companion is can be somewhat flighty, prone to changing his mind about what he wishes to do at the drop of a hat. Still and all, he's a goodly sort, and quite handy to have around.

Much as your items appeal, I'm afraid I don't have the monies to afford such things right now. I would, however, be very interested in a purchase in the future; you've a keen sense for people, to have picked up on my interest in the arcane without so much as a real conversation.

"I am interested in other information, however. In particular, I'd love to look through any materials you might have on the history of the local prison. I'm doing some research, you see, and any information you have would be very helpful."

The old wizard blinks at the half-orc in some consternation. "I hope my words did not offend your companion. I am often blunt in my assessment of things. The objective scholar in me no doubt. I do not judge though, no sir. A true scholar only observes and reports and leaves judgement to the gods. As for my assessment of you, well that may appear almost mystical to the untrained eye, but for an observer such as myself it is simplicity I assure you. There is a certain crinkling of the skin about the eyes that comes from long hours staring at faded manuscripts as well as tell tale calluses on the fingers and a tiny ink stain here and there. These things they do speak volumes. That coupled with the fact that your companion did not seem the type to wander into a shop such as mine of his own accord. No, I quickly gathered that while he did the talking you must have been the impetus for the visit." Vandim must struggle not to glaze over at the long winded explanation and may feel a certain sympathy for the students in the other room who must endure this man's excessive verbiage on a regular basis. He carries on a bit longer and then once more moves toward making a sale. "Ah, yes research. Well you've come to the right place. I have at great expense acquired a fine collection of first order and second order sources that any scholar will find invaluable. As a fellow scholar I wish I had the luxury of making these resources available free of charge, but alas acquiring and maintaining such a collect is a costly matter, and my first love is of course educating the young." He glances back into the classroom and shouts at the students, "William unhand Samuel this instant. I swear you are like a pack of wild moneys the moment my back is turned. Return to your assigned seats this instant. I want each of you to write a paragraph on the difference between first and second order observations. If you don't know what that means then pair up and one of you whack yourselves with a stick while the other watches and then switch up until something occurs to you. Now students." He steps back to you. "Now as I was saying there are certain expenses that go with such a collection, but you are welcome to research as much as you want today for the meager fee of 10 gold coins." He stows his magical trinkets and moves to a locked door to reveal a small library illuminated by an ever burning torch. "The sum total of civilization's accumulated knowledge at your fingertips." The collection is in fact smaller than Professor Lorrimer's by a significant degree, but clearly some of the old prison's records are visible within, so their could in fact be something of use here.

OOC: If you pay the 10 gp fee and use the library you may take a +2 bonus on any knowledge checks related to Harrowstone and its history.

Besharrn steps from the shop the buzz of the wordy wizard still lingering in his ears. As he strolls the quiet streets his nose picks up the scent of cook fires and turns toward them. As he cuts though and alley to get closer to the sources of the smells he sees a figure huddled in a doorway apparently either drunk or sick.

OOC: DC15 perception check.

Besharrn spares a moment's attention for the figure huddled in the doorway, his keen ranger's senses taking over, thinking that it is much too warm for one to be huddled-up like that for warnth.

An over powering reek of decay replaces the pleasant cooking smells in Besharnn's nostrils. Something is not right with the figure. The hairs on the back of his neck stand up and he realizes there is danger here.

Besharrn raises his halberd into a defensive position and calls out, "Halloo! Watchman, please!"
[Action: Full Defense]

OOC: Is that +4 to AC for full defense, I think? If so, that's AC25, same as Shield of Swings
