I want to build an FR Dwarf based on John Mclane from Die Hard...

I’m looking to make a Forgotten Realms Hill Dwarf who is basically “Die Hard”. A man (or Dwarf) of action. A character who is always in the wrong place at the wrong time. Yippee Kai Yay.

Anyway...

I’m thinking of a multi class build of Barbarian and Rogue or Barbarian and Monk. I’m not trying for fully optimized, just a certain flavor. Hard to kill and possible skill based. Or possibly great with his bare hands in a fight or minimal weapons (since in the campaign world, we are often in social situations without armor and weapons. (It tends to happen A LOT).

Any thoughts?

I’d start with a skill-centric class- ranger or rogue- and then beef up his unarmed combat skills. Should be a decent shot with a crossbow.

My personal issue with throwing barbarian, etc. into the mix is that JM doesn’t seem to me to fit the “raging warrior” archetype. He may be angry, but he remains in control of himself.

To be honest, I'm not a proficient Character Builder. 99.99999% of the time, I play a single class levels 1 through whenever the campaign ends.

So, my rational for using Barbarian was purely to make him Die Hard; i.e. extremely hard to kill. High hit die, resistance to damage, etc.

And thank you, Wednesday Boy. I'm still chuckling.

Do you mean Inquisitor? Is that a thing in 5E? I remember Pathfinder has one but I wasn't aware of a D&D version.

It’s a new archetype in the Xanathar’s book, with multiple abilities related to using Perception & Investigation. Seemed to be a good fit for JM’s ability to quickly spot traps and tricks.
