There's nothing wrong with a DM not wanting to allow content he isn't familiar with.

If you really want to be able to use the book, perhaps you could lend your copy to your DM so he can at least read through it. Alternatively, if you can afford it, you could buy him his own copy. (Better yet, get your fellow players to chip in.)

His argument towards it was that he didn't have the book so therefore couldn't learn how to have an edge as a dm against the players, but we are always opening our phb or dm guide all the time to look up rulings all the time. I can understand his argument, but at the same time if I paid money for this book I want to use it.

Play how you want, but the idea of playing in a game based around DM vs Players sounds atrocious to me.

We've all offered to let him borrow our books of xanathars lol.

My character just recently died in a battle vs a beholder. I'm fine with it. It's expected. Rolling a new character to me is always fun, but my DM tells me I can't use xanathars guide because he doesn't have it when four other players at the table do have it. Just wanting to see what others think on this.

I think you can't use Xanathar's Guide in this campaign.

What else is there to say? If it were my campaign, and I didn't own XGtE myself, I'd probably allow things on a case-by-case basis. But it's not my campaign. If the DM, for whatever reason, does not want to allow XGtE material, that's his prerogative. If you bought the book without asking if it would be allowed, that's on you. He's not under any obligation to "make good" on your purchase.

Not sure I like the sound of that, "Players vs. DM" isn't a style of gameplay I particularly enjoy. Making a campaign challenging is one thing. But a DM treating the party like his opponent/enemy instead of fellow players can be unhealthy, unless that's the style of game you've all agreed to.

He's still fresh at being a Dm. So that's how he's progressed from where he started to now. I've noticed he's become more power hungry. Making it so that we don't get magic items because their to O.P. (his words) but yet the creatures we fight are honestly way to strong for us. We didn't have a chance against the beholder we fought. My character died. Two turned to stone. And the other was paralyzed. And he had it set up to where we couldn't get out of the 150ft cone so that we couldn't use magic ( half our party is magical users).

Yeah, he's definitely not the kind of DM I'd want to play with. Just because he's controlling the monsters doesn't mean he's actually your opponent. And while some magic items are quite powerful, the tables for choosing items to find in a monster's loot are designed to scale appropriately.
