Love/Hate - Magic Items!

There is no such thing as a bad magic item - provided, of course, that it's not cursed or otherwise out to kill you.

Why's that, you ask?

Because even the holiest of holy avengers* can be sold for a pretty penny to a paladin in someone else's party, leaving you with great gobs of coin to spend on other things. Before this, the avenger* is merely a very efficient means of carrying around a lot of wealth without encumbering yourself.

That said, one of my least favourite items are those annoying Ioun Stones, mostly because having something like that flashily orbiting around your head also paints a big neon "Wealthy! Rich! Mug and rob now!" target on the owner of said head....

* - feel free to substitute here any magic item you otherwise dislike and would never use.

Love: I love spellcasting so any item that lets me cast more spells is wonderful. The ring of spell storing is the best, but pearl of power and the spell gems from OotA are great too.

Hate: Any of the weapons that offer a bonus to a specific creature type but are otherwise just +X magic weapons. The dragon slayer and giant slayer are the poster children. They just feel really situational.

Love Slippers of Spider Climbing, even though walking sideways and upside down was a bit hokey. At least the DM didn't make all the coins fall out of my PCs pocket.

I also liked all the little things that made the PCs life comfortable and maybe had a little side benefit. Something like a blanket that allowed you to get rest in armor, or a mug that filled with ale on command.

Hate magic ammunition. None of the PCs use it since they only have one or two and might waste it. Everyone remembers having their only +3 arrow finally want to be used only to miss and now it is gone. Now, quivers that make +1 arrows on command are loved. Another thing not to have to track.

I really like Nolzur's Marvelous Pigments. And will echo iserith on the Immovable Rod.

My favorite combo of items is no long in the DMG. We still have the Decanter of Endless Water, but that was the most fun when paired with Boots of Water Walking. Go a geyser at an angle, run up it. Just lots of inventive uses for interacting with the environment with that pair.

Oh, and as for the Ring of Sustenance: Back in AD&D 2nd ed we had to infiltrate a powerful bad guy's organization and figure out his plans. Instead of going in as low-end guys they wouldn't notice - but would also not get access to plans, we stymied the DM by posing as a power evil adventuring party. My failed paladin (well, fighter who had wanted to be a paladin but wasn't chosen) lived in his suit of armor without eating or sleeping for three weeks pretending to be a Helmed Horror. All thanks to the Ring of Sustainable.
