D&D 5E The Warlord shouldn't be a class... change my mind!

I'd like a warlord class, and I didn't like 4e. I liked the old commander class which popped up near the end of the 3.5 run, which was inspiration for 4e warlord. I really like the commander class in 13th Age. I think it's a neat concept, so for sure WOTC could include one. No biggie. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is not looking for mythical perfection, just a redo of a fun class concept.

I love the 13th age commander class

You are correct: it even has the ability to shed/discard it's helplessness to allow you to replace your levels in it to another class. For those who hate the lazylord aspect of it OR for the moment in the plot where your Noble DECIDES to do something.
Hmm that is interesting....

So... Level 8 or so to become roughly the equivalent in feel of a level 3 Warlord??
Level 5 in 5e or so is a level 1 4e Anything, so when they are suggesting multiclassing that is what I look for can it do its level 1 tricks at level 5 if so that is baseline. (three more levels however is like 6 more levels in 4e) - so yeh level 8 is a couple levels late. "Feel" is a bit subjective admittedly, but I couldnt do my low level Swordmage without epic levels of multiclassing (and it was not because of power) meh.

The battlemaster certainly provides the mechanical seed: maneuvers.
The Paladin is an able support class, though more focused on personal DPR than the Warlord should be (and, it's at least a flexible focus, Smite is often the /best/ thing to do with slots, but not the only thing). Along with other support classes like the Bard and Druid, it would be a good benchmark to balance a 5e Warlord against.
The Bravura being able to bold and risky do some decent DPR wouldnt be bad at all...

Your mileage may vary. I have no idea why the Warlord is so divisive but them I'm also still waiting for a shadow magic warlock. Or some shadow magic.
Ironically, post-Essentials "Heroes of Shadow" made most of the Shadow source classes* into :drumroll: sub-classes of existing classes.
MM has an MO, it seems.

* IIRC: Assassin and, of all things, Vampire, got classes while Binder, 'Nethermancer,' Necromancer, and Blackguard were sub-classes.
