Is a Kickstarter for this Epic Bestiary book a good idea?

I haven't looked too closely at their Epic work (yet*) because I didn't want it influencing my writing. I do know they have the same sort of +10 Mythic Levels that Pathfinder did.

Not quite like PF IIRC, but it has been a while since I looked at it.

As regards the art about 90% my interior art is black and white. So while I am confident my colour pieces are on a par with their art I'm guessing each of their 20+ (IIRC) monster entries in this new book has at least one colour illustration (part of my stretch goal plans is to have more of the interior art finished in colour).

Just an FYI, most of the Epic Legacy interior artwork is BW or not as high-quality. However, they do have one top-notch artwork of each god/epic monster they stat and a similar number of pieces in the core rulebook and then color pieces (but not as impressive) of classes. etc.

I am going to push again for the best art you can afford. Have at least a few high quality pieces ready to go for marketing before and during the launch. And make interior art upgrades a stretch goal. I'm going to get it no matter what, but art sells IME.

I don't normally do Kickstarters, but this is one I would absolutely back! No idea if you have enough of an audience to make it work though, as you can't really find this forum unless you already know where it is.

UK has some history in epic D&D gaming and with the right marketing can drum up support. 2C Gaming had no history in Epic gaming and their first epic KS failed (2016), but 3 years later it was successful and now they are regularly hitting $100,000+ with their epic supplements.

There is also Epic Characters (and related supplements) on DMs Guild which has done well.

There is a market for it, you just need to find it.

That seems perfectly reasonable to me! Though I think when you release it on Drivethru you could offer a POD version.

I could, but do I want to enable a visibly weaker print version which will retail at a similar price point to the high quality version? I'm not sure I do. I'll think about it though.

It is really for people who missed out on the Kickstarter but still want a print copy. If the option is physical copy at lesser quality or no physical copy, well some will take the step down in quality. I know I would.

Yes it does seem to help, its easy to be wowed by those big colour pages.

That was my plan.

I appreciate it. I know the artwork sells it. At best though (pre-stretch goals at least) I might have 8-10 colour interior pages.

I do like black & white art in general, although I recently learned a few new photoshop tricks myself and I might try adding some spot colour to one of the illustrations just to see how it compares.

Those missing the Kickstarter will be able to buy a Print copy either on Amazon or Ebay (the former dependant upon whether Mixam have that option).

I backed the Kickstarter for Tome of Titans 2. I reasoned that since they won't be delivering for a year, their book won't influence my own work (for better or worse). Presumably also most of their actual rules are in the other books rather than this one.

I also backed the Ossarium Kickstarter. I love that style of art and it looks like they have some crazy looking monsters. One interesting thing about their crowdfund is that they give you the 3D Printer schematics for all the monsters. I wonder how much it would cost to get someone to make 3D models of the monsters in the book (and thus enable 3D printed creatures). Also does anyone know if gargantuan size monsters are viable for 3D printers or are they too big/time consuming to print?

Gargantuan and larger monsters can be 3D printed. You can go quite large if you break it into parts too. I haven't looked into the tech in a while, but I have seen gargantuan 3d printed minis.

PS - I have thought of doing the same thing. There was a dragon based KS that had this feature recently and it really made me want to jump on that bandwagon
