Half Elf and Orc were mechanically near identical the origins playtest versions Elf and Orc.
Well, no, the Packet 1 Orc is the Orc from Monsters of the Multiverse, down to the exact fluff wording. It shares the Relentless Endurance trait with '14 Half-Orcs, but drops their other traits and adds the Adreneline Rush and Poeerful Build traits.

The '14 Half-Elf is just two Skills and a +1 to an attribute, plus the Trance and Fey Ancestry ribbons.

Meanwhile the Packet 1 Elf has Trance, Keen Senses, and the Elven Lineage choice (high/wood/dark elf) and everything that comes with it, at the cost of the '14 Half-Elf's Skill Versatility.

Trance has no value, it's a ribbon. Keen Senses is a single Skill proficiency, as opposed to 2. And the Lineage Magic is worth about the same as +2 to one Attribute and +1 to two Attributes. Based on my calculations, the mainchange to Species over '14 is that everyone gets a boost from a free Feat and Attribute adjustments in Backgroudn, which is a strict power upgrade as the '24 Species have the same math value as the '14 Races including the '14 assigned Attribute adjustments.

Trance is a meaningless ribbon, but I don't want my Khoravar to be forced to take it just by virtue of also wanting access to the equally worthless Fey Ancestry.
Keen Senses gives me one fixed skill proficiency at the cost of two floating ones, removing the only "Human" trait they had.
And the Elven Lineage choice only further pushes the character into being an Elf above all else.

I get that it's a strict power upgrade, but it's a strict power upgrade that turns the Khoravar I was interested in playing into an Elf that I'm not.

If we want to talk about bringing the '14 Half-Elf up to spec with current species design, that's an entirely different conversation, but that still requires letting Half-Elves have some kind of mechanics for themselves.

Well, try that Elven Heritage Feat upthread on a Human.

It'd be nice to just drop Trance entirely.

Like, the only thing it does is force the elf player to come up with something they were doing for the four hours nothing important can happen while the rest of the party sleeps.

My friend's copy of the Players Handbook has a version of Polearm Master that allows spears to be used. My version says polearms and quarterstaves only. I guess he's playing 6th edition and I'm playing 5th!
Do you  really see the '24 changes as errata?
