D&D 5E Thievery in 5e - still relevant?

I’m happy the game moved from Thieves to Rogues as the baseline for the archetype.
I’ve yet to see anyone play the Thief subclass in 5E, although there’s one guy I play with that still assumes every rogue is a thief.

Having gold be the main (often only) motivating factor for characters got boring for me over 2 decades ago.
Greedy characters that haggle and try to milk as much gold from every situation and NPC they encounter sucks the fun out of things pretty quickly.
