She's casting a low level illusion spell and the prestidigitation cantrip. She's practicing in her dorm room and trying to impress her room mate. You can tell she's a low level wizard. She hasn't earned her hat yet. ;-)Could be that, too. Ultimately, the visual effect of a spell is up to the player (within reason). I have no problem with a wizard player describing almost any kind of abjuration or barrier spell looking like that.
It's not mentioned by name, but it's implied in the AD&D DMG, pg 157, in the Eye of Vecna section. No faster way in the game to give yourself 20/20 vision! (Consult your optometrist for a list of possible side-effects.)Last I checked, “Leomund’s Lasic Surgery” isn’t in the book either.
Well, its an improvement over the traditional impractical bits of metal armor women were depicted wearing in the art for much of the game's history. Not really a fan of the completely impractical bits of metal armor.
Staff and magical effects are nice.
It sure is a shock to see a bunch of dudes on the internet not liking this piece of art in particular for vague reasons.
I mean, seriously, it's not like the D&D Wizard is known for being a gritty and grounded archetype. Also, this wizard has obviously cast Otiluke's telekinetic sphere, which explains most of what's happening in this illustration.
1e wizards and their minimal spells for several levels and d4 HP feel like they might have a comment about gritty and hitting the ground, but I'm too tired to make it.I mean, seriously, it's not like the D&D Wizard is known for being a gritty and grounded archetype.
Even an old school AD&D Wizard could do some gnarly stuff, not exactly low magic stuff.1e wizards and their minimal spells for several levels and d4 HP feel like they might have a comment about gritty and hitting the ground, but I'm too tired to make it.
3e/PF, 4e, 5e certainly feel different.

The archetypal image for each Class is unlikely to be a Level 1 PC, I would think. These are aspirational "you can become this" art pieces showing a dramatic example of the Class in action. For sure! (Eventually.)
