D&D 5E UA Spell Versatility: A deeper dive

My apologies if this has already been covered, as i didn't have time to read all the posts. What about a sorcerer that is truly different than a wizard. By using Sorcerer Points (spell point system), you place the sorcerer into a unique class - as I suggest it should be. The narrative might go...

Chaotic Good Is The Most Popular Alignment!

It's a game, not moral philosophy I'm all for philosophy, I have a degree in it. But this is a game. The alignment mechanics is a simplified system to provide some parameters or restrictions to a character. You can't one day risk your life with no reward to save the village, and the next...

Chaotic Good Is The Most Popular Alignment!

No alignment. Which is to say, let the alignment grow organically out of the character's personality (who they are before stats, die rolls, etc.). This will allow for a character with a main theme and nuanced variations. More like you and I. In short, more improv, role-playing, and storytelling.

Burning Questions: How Do You Deal With Ludicrous Players?

Puppeteers versus roleplayers Great way to put it. An extension of the player like a puppet in their hand that has no character (inner life) whatsoever. If you won't role-play (pretend to be someone else), why are you playing an RPG? Go play Chess or Bridge.

Gygax IP To Be Made Available For Video Games

This is nothing more than the continuing battle over who speaks for Gary Gygax, his sons (Ernie & Luke) who were with him during the beginnings of D&D, or the "next generation." If you want to support Gary Gxgax's legacy, you can find it to a degree in "Castles & Crusades." Or, in what Ernie...

[PF2] Gnome and Halfling ancestry up on Paizo blog

This idea of a visual reference leading to an out of scale head or whatever is silly. Don't make them look cartoonish. Find some other visually creative way to make the distinction, assuming that is even necessary. For halflings: feet, hair, etc. For gnomes: ears, facial features. Or include...

Pathfinder 2E Halflings & Gnomes: More Pathfinder 2nd Edition Races; Plus Ability Boosts & Flaws Explained

    Variant combat mechanics

DMMike: "I'm also expecting Pathfinder 2 to have better CR flow...so you might want to keep your eye on that." I have been following some of Pathfinder 2 combat examples, and I am impressed with what I have seen so far. It looks very promising, at least relative to what I am trying to do.

    Variant combat mechanics

My Thanks to Thondor & DMMike. Very interesting and useful information. These are some of the ideas I am using to wrap my head around what I want to ultimately create on the game table. The simple answer is to have more "realism," at least from a tactical perspective, while still maintaining...

    Variant combat mechanics

This idea is most interesting. My immediate thought that sprang from this would be to add a "movement opportunity" as long as the character didn't use all of their movement during their initiative turn. This might be a simpler (mechanically) way to minimize the "standing around" effect, at least...

D&D 5E What is your current way to roll stats

Standard array or point buy from the book. Player choice. But I really like the "Advantage/Disadvantage" system, and the 2d4 +7. I will add these as player choice.

    Variant combat mechanics

Blue, thank you for taking the time to lay this out. Very informative. It is quite lovely to have a place such as this to throw out an idea and have others respond offering solid support. With the above advice, I am going to try a segmented Combat Round, call it 3 (4?) mini CR's within the...

    D&D 5E Mythological Figures: Sir Lancelot (5E)

"How dare you sir, how dare you!" suggesting that Sir Lancelot was a mythical figure. He was real, and could not be defeated, except by love.

D&D 5E So Why is 5E So Popular?

Mercer et al are polished performers. They have a large amount of theatre training and experience, plus a performers mindset that brings the show to life. And of course an exiting fan base due to their work in the gaming industry. It is in some ways a throwback to early radio shows. In some...

D&D 5E So Why is 5E So Popular?

Products succeed or fail for many reasons. Some you can plan for, others not. One difference for 5th was more money behind the product. That is huge. Two companies with similar products: A & B. B is the better product, but A has much more money for marketing, distribution, development, etc. A...
