D&D General Design issues with 5e

Anecdotally, I ran D&D4e over Foundry VTT from level 1-30 and then again from level 1-10 or so, stopping last year when my computer died. We had a good time killing Orcus, and a lot of that had to do with the programmable automation and powers displayed in chat. I would not attempt to run epic...

D&D General Design issues with 5e

5.x having PHB spells in monster statblocks is a big part of why I am in fact running a different game: 13th Age 2e. Having to cross-reference the PHB for a monster I'm running if I don't precisely recall how, say, Sleep works in this edition is a pain in the ass, especially if another player is...

D&D General Design issues with 5e

From the same SRD page we both referenced, here's the paragraph immediately after the bit you quoted: As a bonus, here's a bit from Restoration: Everything I said about 3e's negative level mechanics still applies.

D&D General Design issues with 5e

Please don't assume things I'm saying. I was indeed thinking of 3e's negative level mechanic and had checked that same SRD page before replying. Everything I said about negative levels applies.

D&D General Design issues with 5e

Negative levels were fussy to deal with, unfun for players, and messes with keeping players at the same level in an era where many tables have moved to 'milestone' leveling instead of strictly tracking experience, as 3e expected (but some tables didn't). All that means I, as a DM, don't feel...

    D&D 3.x I miss 3.5 edition

While it's not my preferred edition, 3e was my first exposure to D&D and I too get a little nostalgic for it. Things like the chart of actions that do or don't provoke an attack of opportunity keep me from wanting to run it, though. Instead I just consume bits of fiction based on the ruleset...

    D&D 5E (2024) This Feels Like 4E

As someone who prefers 4e, it's really amusing to see something happen over and over: folks who take issue with something 5.x did and proposing or house ruling it to work closer to how 4e did it. That 5e 2024 feels closer to 4e seems like WotC is just following feedback about 5e 2014.

We All Won – The OGL Three Years Later

Not yet, no. I am aware that Draw Steel does things fairly differently from 4e, such as dropping binary to-hit rolls in favor of a tiers-of-success check. I'm presently running 13th Age 2e, which also doesn't do it quite like 4e did, but does work better for a shorter two-hour timeslot that...

We All Won – The OGL Three Years Later

Even with WotC moving the 5e SRDs to a CC-BY 4.0 license, I don't think that undoes the harm done by WotC. Any time a hobbyist or independent designer who wants to do their own remix on F20 games but doesn't because they are afraid of screwing up the licensing between multiple, maybe...

Where do we stand on Harry Potter?

Also check out Standard E-books, while they don't have as much, their work tends to be nicer formatted for reading with ebook readers and programs: https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/lord-dunsany (Just passing through, I'm trans and such but I'm not active here so, uh, yeah! Mods are doing good...

    A text question

This is how I would word it: 1. ...[on a hit,] the target takes 10 damage. This damage cannot reduce the target's current HP below 1. 2. Roll to hit against up to three targets. Choose one target that was hit in this way, they are slowed... [by X speed].

    D&D 5E (2014) Most annoying / awesome magic items

I love the Girdle of Femininity/Masculinity. I don't think of it as an annoying cursed item, I think of it as a fun way to toy with gender norms and stereotypes. I hate all of the cursed items in the AD&D DMG that more or less read: "this looks exactly like a really cool magic item and you...

D&D 5E (2014) How many adventurers are in your world?

None in my games, and not even the PCs: they should be more than hobo-murderers. They should be citizens, militia-men, members of shadowy organizations, merchants, clergy, and more. An identity as an adventurer is silly: "I'm an adventurer because I adventure!"
