Makes me think in video game RPGs when the literal world is ending or the evil king is rampaging through the countryside yet the innkeeper and blacksmith gotta charge you. Like, I am literally trying to save your life and you are charging me money?

"I literally NEED that magic sword to defeat the Lich King or WE ALL DIE"
"Still gonna be 5000 gold, my guy."

I like how Final Fantasy X handled that:

Rin: "Evrae is truly mighty. Be well prepared."

Wakka: "We gotta pay!? If we lose, you'll die too, buddy!"

Rin: "I have faith in your victory."

Makes perfect sense to me. If you fail, everyone dies and nobody(including the adventurers) needs money, but if you succeed, well a guy's gotta make a living!
