    Lawful Good Alignment and Roleplaying

Actually, I am in a sense, and I'm not in a sense because D&D disagrees with itself. The position D&D has taken on alignment is inconsistent, because every quote you mentioned is belied by the spell system. For similar reasons, alignments cannot be "personality types or personal philosophies."...

    Lawful Good Alignment and Roleplaying

Well, I'm glad you began that as a supposition. ;-) I don't think that alignment "defines character." I think that alignment is a fundamental part of what defines a character. By 'fundamental' I mean "serving as, or being an essential part of, a foundation or basis; basic; underlying," not...

    Lawful Good Alignment and Roleplaying

Right you are. The Monk is in the Order of the Shining Hand. They follow the god Azuth who is somber and has a dry, sardonic wit. Followers of Azuth: embrace magic for constructive purposes; seek to acquire every spell ever made in order to keep the magic arts flourishing; they give away spell...

    Lawful Good Alignment and Roleplaying

There is a typo in my previous post: should be Alignments are matters of kind.

    Lawful Good Alignment and Roleplaying

I agree. His order is Lawful Neutral, and so there are some great role-playing opportunities with the tension between the Monk and his own order. Here, I disagree for the same reasons that I mentioned to BiggusGeekus -- alignment is a difference in kind and isn't a matter of degree. This...

    Lawful Good Alignment and Roleplaying

I couldn't disagree more. First, alignment is temporally primary in that we must select one before we can use spells etc. Alignment is selected before any action is ever taken in the game. It will inevitably condition all future action. Second, alignment is logically primary to action. Action...

    Lawful Good Alignment and Roleplaying

Reaper, believe me -- DonAdam hasn't simplistic notions on anything. He is a fine DM and always thinks things through very well. I think we have a legitimate disagreement based on what 'alignment' actually represents in the game. Well, I can see no reason for the monk to forgive and forget...

    Lawful Good Alignment and Roleplaying

Thanks for the reply, BiggusGeekus. I see, this is where we disagree. His profession is certainly a more developed role-playing concept; but, his alignment is more fundamental. As an example, when we cast Protection From Law, what are we protecting ourselves from? A philosophy of governance...

    Lawful Good Alignment and Roleplaying

I recently had a good, friendly argument with my DM about Lawful Good characters. Here's how it started. We have an impish little Gnome named Gimble in our party who has been secretly working for a rival organization. He has been trying to undermine some of our activities as part of the...

(RANT) (longish) A player wishes to drop

Actually, I think she may be in the right here. You sound like a rules lawyer turned DM. There are a lot of players, me included, that think that the rules ought to reinforce role-playing not the other way around. Maybe your team really ISN't any good at role-playing. I currently game with a...

    Alignment, use it or not?

I'm a player. I'm not a DM nor am I a rules lawyer. But, I get quite irritated at players that do not respect their alignments. I get even more peeved at DMs that do not enforce alignment. If we aint goin' to role play it, why bother with it at all?
