D&D 4E 4E: What we think we know

This concerns me a little bit. What if someone doesn't own a book, but their GM does, and they want to use something from it with their character. Will the chargen allow people to add stuff to their characters from books they don't personally own?

    D&D 4E D&D 4E Presentation videos

I thought that those limits were for the free version, and the paid subscription had unlimited use.

    D&D 4E D&D 4E Presentation videos

I love the art used in that presentation. Not old school AD&D, and not 3e dungeonpunk, but something that looks classic while also new and evocative. I especially like the dramatic stylized paintings with good use of light. I'm not sure about the PHB and MM covers though. The DMG is...

    Core book releases

Not likely. They'll probably include that material for free on the D&D Insider website, to get people to start trying it out from the very beginning. You're probably right about the reason for the order. DMG material is useful to be sure, but MM material is neccessary. People can make do...

D&D 4E What Changes Do You Hope They Make To The 4E Rules?

Those are what I most want, plus: - Viable multiclass spellcasters without needing a cludge of various prestige classes and feats. - Borrow the combat rules from Star Wars Saga Edition. Keep it streamlined. - Classes are talent based, again like SWSE, but with the talents made to fit the D&D...

D&D 4E 4E: What we think we know

If Wizards wants to turn the D&D Experience into the D&D con, then it would make sense for them to release 4e at it. That would also give them a 6 month lead time, rather than a full year, which they might want since their D&D 3e sales will tank as soon as 4e is announced.

August - What are you reading?

I'm reading Sherman Alexie's The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. It's bleak, depressing, hillarious, and beautiful. Next up, The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay. I'm also tempted to reread Stardust before seeing the movie, and I just picked up William Gibson's new novel for a...

With Star Wars Saga Edition do I need other d20 SW books?

The only one with useful crunch would be the Ultimate Alien Anthology, but it would be a very useful addition, and it's not likely to be obsoleted by a Saga book for years. The equipment guide would also be useful, but would require more conversion. Other than that, the setting books have good...

Classic video games that I'd replay

Day of the Tentacle and the Monkey Island games. No recent game has come close in terms of clever dialogue and gleeful silliness. Serf City. That little game was addictive, back in the day. I never played Planescape: Torment, but I've heard so many good things about it that I'm tempted to...

    Modern Saga?

That's what I would do. Just take SWSE, remove the stuff about the Force and starships, relabel all the blaster stats as gun stats, maybe stat up a modern vehicle or two, and you're good to go.

Do Star Wars Saga skill rules make d20 better?

I voted Agree because it's great, but not perfect. I especially like the broadly defined skills. The trained/untrained aspect I like a lot, but it's too difficult to learn skills after 1st level, and the way it interacts with cross-class skills is atrocious. I like the house-rule that...

    Innovative horror novel recommendations

I really liked Steven Brust's Agyar. It's probably shelved in the fantasy section with the rest of Brust's books, but it's really much more of a horror novel. I won't tell what it's about, for reasons that will hopefully become obvious if you read it.

    high action modern d20 system?

While that's certainly true of D&D and d20 Modern, it's not true of Mutants and Masterminds. I like Savage Worlds and recommend it too, but M&M is just as fast and allows for more detail if you want it. A PL 6 M&M2e game would work well. If you decide to go that route, check out the "Street...

    [SWSE] Autofire seems very broken

A better house rule might be for normal cover to give 'full or no damage from autofire', so improved cover is better than it. That is, a successful attack roll still does full damage, but a failed attack roll does no damage.

    [SWSE] Autofire seems very broken

No, your attack roll (d20 + bonuses) has to be at least 10. Essentially, the "square" has a reflex defense of 10. Having to hit Def 10 in order to hit the area at all is also in the errata.

[SW Saga] Crime Lords are strong in the Force!

It's not all that great. Force Adepts, Sith Apprentices, and Jedi Knights get talents every odd level and force techniques every even level, and force techniques are almost all better than those generic force talents. Plus, they get even better PrC-specific talents.

    Vulgar language in fantasy

I don't like that the language in most fantasy books has been sanitized, but I find that using modern english swearwords in fantasy settings sometimes kills the verisimilitude for me. It's jarring unless it's done well, because it usuallly comes out sounding like modern idiom or slang. It...

Recommend five (and only five) sci-fi books

You know that books aren't allowed to be in more than one litereary ghetto at the same time. ;) It goes against the code, Roger Zelazny and Neil Gaiman notwithstanding.

Recommend five (and only five) sci-fi books

The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russel Light, by M. John Harrison A Canticle for Liebowitz, by Walter M. Miller Dune, by Frank Herbert Red Mars, by Kim Stanley Robinson I'd also include something by William Gibson, but I'm not sure that cyberpunk counts as sci-fi.

I wish Zhang Yimou had done the Star Wars prequels

Absolutely. "Han Solo Character" is standard Hollywood jargon for "the scoundrel character you put in a movie to liven it up and say the good dialogue", so it's amazing that the prequels didn't have one. It's odd, but the younger guard in House of Flying Daggers, the womanizer, was more of a...
