What is exploration & why is it fun?

And I think this covers it briefly and elegantly.

Fantasy F------ Vietnam? Sounds very entertaining in its own way. :)

    Is D&D "about" combat?

Right. I wanted to post this. D&D, to me, is first of all about exploring and interacting with an imagined environment (which could be a dungeon, a broader campaign setting, or a set of social relationships if you like that). Combat is a great part of that interaction process, but it is not the...

    Raven Crowking's Nest

The normal pace is whatever allows you to post good content without burning yourself out. Some of the high-traffic blogs can be seen to be struggling for worthwhile content, especially after years of posting. Don't be that guy.

Anyone know about the book on Robert Kuntz?

There is more in the Wikipedia article on VDM Publishing. Apparently, they hope their books are bought accidentally by clueless or hasty libraries. In a way, it is pretty amazing, though. If you told someone in 1990 that in The Future, there would be an immense, free repository of knowledge...

Anyone know about the book on Robert Kuntz?

I may be interested in a scholarly book on early D&D, but... $66 for the trade paperback? Really? "Note: Content for this publication has been taken from one or more articles found on the WIKIPEDIA website."? Really? A company variously calling itself Alphascript Publishing and Betascript...

City State of the Invincible Overlord - worth it?

Probably not a collectible (a brand new Wilderlands of High Fantasy boxed set at list price would be one, however), but it is a very cool supplement. Enthusiastic, full of local colour and adventure hooks, and pretty well organised too. Perfect for "Ffahrd and Grey Mouser"-style games.

    Grognard good...grognard bad

Yeah, that was inconsiderate and I should have worded it more tactfully. Then again, I hadn't the faintest idea people in 2010 would still be discussing a random edition wars post I made in 2008 on what bothered me at that time. So what? Should I apologise two years and a shitload of personal...

    Grognard good...grognard bad

Since I was asked for a definition in a PM... I posted basic examples from the 4e PHB here, and had more to say on the subject here and here, with ideas on how to deal with the problem here. Since my point has been discussed to hell and back since I made it in 2006 (way before 4e was even...

companies staying away from rpg gamers

GMS plain doesn't like the competition - one more gamer putting his campaigns on a heavy DIY basis, one less potential revenue stream for Adamant Entertainment. That's the ugly truth of it. This is the same argument Ed Cha pushed ca. 2003 or so when he suggested that people posting free modules...

Did Gygax owe a bit of thanks to WotC?

I think J. R. R. Tolkien owes a bit of thanks to Tolkien Enterprises for managing his intellectual property and using it to leverage core brands to drive customer satisfaction. What icould be a more heartfelt hommage to the Professor's work than a well-managed revenue stream? What could be more...

Pathfinder 1E Sandboxes? Forked from Paizo reinvents hexcrawling

Hobo: thank you for your response! Unfortunately, I have no time to answer at length right now, but I'd just like to let you know that your post has been read and appreciated. :)

Pathfinder 1E Sandboxes? Forked from Paizo reinvents hexcrawling

On to the contentious part of the thread: It appears to me that your idea of "sandboxes" is largely at odds with that of the people who play and enjoy them, and you aren't prepared to accept what they have to say about it. Your interpretation certainly doesn't describe the campaigns I have had...

Pathfinder 1E Sandboxes? Forked from Paizo reinvents hexcrawling

That's a good one, but here is something else to consider: if the same thing ("you screwed up, got captured and thrown into the caves beneath the volcano") happened as a consequence of meaningful player choices, it would be an awesome development from a sandbox perspective. Not because of the...

Pathfinder 1E Sandboxes? Forked from Paizo reinvents hexcrawling

That is another good point. It is a common criticism of sandboxes that they are "false" if they a) would not function as internally consistent worlds on closer scrutiny. b) do not encompass the entirety of the playing area (i.e. the GM is "just playing Calvinball") (See this thread on Hofrat for...

Pathfinder 1E Sandboxes? Forked from Paizo reinvents hexcrawling

Wow, a casual look at ENWorld, and I don't just notice an interesting thread, but one with a lot of old associates. Hey there! This post serves as a good reminder in all gaming discussions. It is one thing to look at something as an external observer, but another thing to do it in practice -...

Yes indeed. Inexpensive, comprehensive and well-written. A perfect starter gift (you might want to add some dice and a module or two).

How to respectfuly disagree with EGG?

This is going to be a totally obvious response, but do just that. If you are being respectful, there should be no case against you. Granted, people may still disagree back, so you might want to be prepared for that.
