The thing I miss most from AD&D is...

Oh god, nothing at all; so many arbitrary and nonsensical rules. Actually, that's not true. Well, it is about the rules, but it's not about the fun. The "go into a dungeon beat some bad guys up, nick their stuff" spirit seemed to be lost when we moved away from D&D and picked up more...

    Oots 648!

Killing one's nemesis (temporarily) is evil? At the risk of taking OotS too seriously I'm going to disagree. I'd say her actions are chaotic as she broke a truce and agreement, but given that both characters have tried to kill each other in the past I can't see it as evil - in the context of...

    Oots 648!

The look on Belkar's face is utterly priceless! :D

    On DMing and "writing books"

I thoroughly agree. Stories take many forms and they don't have to be dictatorial in their expression. For example, I was playing Fallout 3 the other week and found a ladder up to the top of the building I was exploring. Outside on the roof was a BBQ, two chairs, a BB gun, 3 boxes of BBs and...

    OotS 609

Holy heck! Fantastic strip! However I also concur she's not gone as there was some nice plot background for her about where her father went. Not that I'm a big believer in plot development in OotS!

Hit Points - A Discussion of a "Solution"

Honestly, and I'm not being sarcastic/nasty here, if people want more realistic combat representation then they should be looking towards Rolemaster, either using the system as a whole or ripping the critical hit system from Arms Law (or what ever they're calling it these days). The system...

Source/Role Matrix in the Advanced Player's Guide

Sorry, this is off the topic a bit, but could someone post the link to the pre-order page for the Advanced Player's Guide? I've managed to lose it. :.-(

    Dungeon 158 ToC Is Up

Thanks Mustrum and Vagabundo! For some reason I do find the WotC site layout very difficult to find my way around. I'm not sure why - part of my day job is coding for websites so I should have some kind of a grip of what's going on, but for what ever reason browsing the Dungeon and Dragon...

    Dungeon 158 ToC Is Up

Stupid question: Can the new magazines be downloaded in one PDF as an issue, instead of the separate files? I'd much rather grab the whole thing and print it so's I can read it on the loo. My girlfriend does not like it when I take the laptop into the loo with me. :hmm:

My players need nookie. Any ideas?

That's not the kind of thing I hear about ... "roleplaying" ... :hmm:

How do you make effective game use of WotC's Dungeon Tiles?

I could make fantastic use of Dungeon Tiles ... if the out of print sets were not out of print.

How do you organise your Dungeon Tiles?

I organise my dungeon tiles by searching for Dungeon Tiles pack 1, but it's not in print anymore, and I'm certainly not paying $40 for it. Maybe if WotC printed some more then I'd have some dungeon tiles to organise.

    Anyone go to GenCon UK?

I had to work this weekend (I hate crunch time) but I wanted to go ... but after Bob's report, I'm glad I didn't!

Waterstones Bookshops With Good RPG Sections

Bath is pretty good; one of the better selections I've seen in Waterstones. Ealing, my current local Waterstones, is terrible.

D&D versus social anxiety disorder (updated 8/20/14)

Well speaking for myself D&D/RPGing in general helped me overcome some pretty bad stuff as I was growing up. I credit RPGs in general with giving me enough social ability to be able to deal with the world at large; most people think I'm pretty well adjusted these days ... except maybe my...

Thirst, suffocation and hunger errata : why ???

Personally I think the space used for these rules is totally wasted; for games where supplies and survival is going to be an issue the DM will likely research the issues a bit more closely and come up with a ruleset which suits their game. For games where basic survival is not going to be an...
