Gygax Magazine? [UPDATE 3 - Electric Boogaloo]

Apologies! Not trying to circumvent anything; it was just easier to copy it in from other places I've used it. Won't happen again, and I'll go through and edit it out upthread. Of course, but just because a book is about someone doesn't mean that their name is used throughout constitutes a...

Gygax Magazine? [UPDATE 3 - Electric Boogaloo]

I don't have a copy, so I don't know the answer to this, but by whom was it published? Is there a trademark statement somewhere on the inside of the book? I know that the proceeds went to the "Gygax Memorial Fund", and such was stated prominently on the cover, but that's very different from...

Gygax Magazine? [UPDATE 3 - Electric Boogaloo]

According to the TESS search on the USPTO website, "Gary Gygax" is not a registered trademark, nor is "Gygax". That doesn't mean it can't be used as a trademark, just that it's not officially registered with the USPTO. However, in order to do that, it must be used in commerce, and as far as I...

Gygax Magazine? [UPDATE 3 - Electric Boogaloo]

And thirty years from now, we can blog exhaustively about the content of the magazines. I KID! I KID! Joe

Gygax Magazine? [UPDATE 3 - Electric Boogaloo]

Seeing the additional information from Tim Kask makes my optimism somewhat less cautious. I do wonder at the economics of starting a print RPG magazine given the current state of the economy and the gaming hobby/industry as a whole, but there certainly are options that can be used to make it...

Gygax Magazine? [UPDATE 3 - Electric Boogaloo]

I'm also very intrigued by this. With all those members of the Old Guard involved, I am cautiously optimistic about what this magazine could produce. Very much looking forward to hearing more. Joe

Kickstarter Adventures Dark and Deep Players Guide Kickstarter

Hey all! Just wanted to let everybody know that the Kickstarter for my Adventures Dark and Deep™ Players Manual is now live. It's my answer to the question "What if Gary Gygax had been allowed to keep developing AD&D?" Based on exhaustive research of Gary's articles in Dragon, online postings...

Public D&D Playtests To Begin On May 24th

I disagree. The timing of the announcement seems pretty obvious, being 30 days away. Unless you're saying they moved up the start of the open playtest as some sort of distraction from the news of Cook's withdrawal? I'm not sure I'd buy that.

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

The hard-and-fast rule is, if you're not being fair as the DM, you're players leave your game. I don't need a rule to tell me "if your players have X levels, you should only throw Y monster hit dice at them, and when you do, make sure you have Z magic items". Sometimes my players face things...

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

I disagree. On the one hand, the combat-as-war approach does allow spell-casters, especially at lower levels, to actively participate in combat situations beyond what they might otherwise be expected to. For instance, a first level magic-user might cast grease to impede the movement of the...

Seminar Transcript - Charting the Course: An Edition for all Editions

I've got to say, this makes me a bit antsy. It almost feels like the attitude is that those poor benighted grognards who don't want lots of options when they first roll up their character will be enticed by all the superfunoptioncandy and finally "see the light" and want to get options for their...

    World of Greyhawk shield devices

Apologies for resurrecting this thread from the hoary mists of time, but just for the benefit of anyone else who might stumble upon it (like I did) while searching for the name of the heraldic symbol that appears on the shields of all the members of the Iron League in the World of Greyhawk, it's...

Castle of the Mad Archmage Poster Maps

And, to make things easier, the whole set is available as a .zip file here: CotMA.zip Joe, I cannot thank you enough for your efforts with the maps. These things are amazing! For all those who have downloaded the original dungeon, these poster maps aren't any new information, but seeing them...

    2e retro clone?

You're quite correct. Adventures Dark and Deep isn't a retro-clone of 2nd edition so much as a reconstruction of what it might have looked like had Gygax still been in charge. So it has the new classes he mentioned in 1985 (mountebank, bard, etc.), streamlined combat, changed up monsters, etc...

    Castle Greyhawk/Zagyg

I couldn't agree more. That's exactly what I'm doing myself. I just happen to be putting my own work out there as a pdf for others to use who might not have the hundreds of hours such a thing takes... Castle of the Mad Archmage was born out of my need to make a Castle Greyhawk for my own...

    Castle Greyhawk/Zagyg

Well truth to tell, I've been using your compilations of Greyhawkiana as a guide for my own efforts (along with my own Greyhawk Lore project and other sources, of course). So from that perspective, they're both along similar lines as expressions of what we know about the original. I wouldn't...

    [CC3] jaerdaph's CC3 Maps, Dungeons, Floorplans etc...

Didn't see an attachment in Undermountain-style in that post, Jaerdaph. Oh, and on level 3, room #116 is supposed to have a door leading to yonder curvy corridor. I'm intentionally putting in those diagonal corridors to confound mappers amongst the explorers. Didn't mean to confound you as...

    [CC3] jaerdaph's CC3 Maps, Dungeons, Floorplans etc...

Level 3 is one I'm particularly interested in seeing the poster map for. With that large room smack dab in the center, it should prove a little more interesting than Level 2, which kinda had a blank spot right in the middle where the pages meet. (Level 4 is different still, with a bunch of...
