D&D 5E Are DMs getting lazy?

My philosophy as a DM boils down to the Jon Stewart quote "Creativity comes from limits, not freedom". He was essentially saying within the context of news commentary his writers create better/more focused comedy than they would given a complete blank slate. I tend to repeat myself and design...

And then there were 8! On Chris Sims and Jennifer Clarke Wilkes' Layoffs...

Man that's just awful. Awful for the game getting less content and of course awful for the designers losing their jobs and possibly having to relocate. I really want more 5E stuff. Hopefully we'll see those two on Kickstarter producing some sort of off-brand Advanced Players Guide or additional...

D&D 5E Princes of the Apocalypse is now Available inAmazon

Word. Most of the time the cultist theme goes like "you see cultists. They're in a cult". If the DM didn't know better the cultists may self-identify as cultists (no one in an actual cult does this). D&D really fails at giving cults any flavor.

D&D 5E Princes of the Apocalypse is now Available inAmazon

Oh... :( I thought it was a massive TOEE campaign. Never played the original. That's really disappointing. I was actually really hyped about the dungeon. It would have actually been really convenient for me if they placed it in the realms too. With the concurrent release of a TOEE board game I...

D&D 5E Princes of the Apocalypse is now Available inAmazon

Has anyone figured what this campaign setting entails? Is it a remake/expansion of Temple of Elemental Evil? It sort of seems like that but I haven't got any confirmation. I know they moved the setting from Greyhawk to Forgotten Realms.

    D&D 5E Updating classic A&D adventures for D&D 5e: a work under development

My group loves that stuff. I did a cave module where they discovered a chainsaw and a blunderbuss and a bunch of reprogrammed modrons. They loved it. I'm pretty sure the idea that D&D should be boxed into a genre died a long time ago.

    D&D 5E Updating classic A&D adventures for D&D 5e: a work under development

Here's the map. I guess it didn't embed in the last post. It's weird...even the mask looks a bit like mine. My map was designed to hide things the players wouldn't have known about at the start of the campaign.

    D&D 5E Updating classic A&D adventures for D&D 5e: a work under development

Dude. THIS IS FRIGGIN WEIRD. I actually Photoshopped the map about a month ago - with Saltmarsh in the same place. Even the white mask you used resembles mine. I actually considered putting White Plume Mountain in their as well. I was considering the Fire Giant Hall in Mount Hotenow also, for...

    D&D 5E Updating classic A&D adventures for D&D 5e: a work under development

Awesome! Wish I could join. I'd be weary of starting characters at higher levels (above 7), unless they're pretty gamer-savvy types. If one person is iffy on the rules it can sort of slow down a high-level campaign for everyone. Why don't you start at a lower level? I find these high level...

D&D 5E Wizards Should Hire Paizo

Man...I'd really like a few of those APs in 5E format. Particularly Kingmaker. And some of those monsters and classes. I don't buy this "PF and 5E are apples and oranges" stuff at all. A good Pathfinder adventure translates just fine to 5E. You can run Forgotten Realms all day in Pathfinder and...

D&D 5E What is my best bet for some cheap, decent miniatures?

All my WOTC and Paizo minis are my most treasured possessions. For the most part they're indestructible and generally come well-painted. If you're on a budget I'd recommend the flat tokens WOTC was bundling with the 4E redbox or 4E books over the Paizo standup pawns. I played in a game with the...

    More DUNGEONS DEEP Miniatures

Same. One per four boxes? I usually just buy two boxes of every Paizo and WOTC set so I don't get anything repeated. If they're only doing one per four boxes I kind of lost interest. Essentially I'd end up owning a lot more kobolds before getting something as simple as a chair.

Delve DEEP into DUNGEONS with Pathfinder's Latest Miniatures Set!

Love the dungeon dressing! Now I can retire my Hero Quest furniture that I've been using for over two decades.

15 Best D&D Modules Of All Time

You know it's so much effort to convert things. It really works if you just run em as is. Keep on the Borderlands is a perfect example of this. Just sub out the monsters. I did Ravenloft too (with the beta) and only had to rebuild Strahd the Sunsword. I think I buffed the zombies and skeletons...

15 Best D&D Modules Of All Time

Hey! I'm doing the same thing! Leilon is now Saltmarsh. The bandits that were running Phandalin were basing operations out of the abandoned Saltmarsh mansion. Mount Hotenow may be overrun by fire giants (from Against The Giants - I haven't read that one yet). I'm trying to decide what comes...

15 Best D&D Modules Of All Time

I'm playing Keep now while running Lost Mine. I played Lost Mine a few months ago. Pound for pound I'd say Lost Mine plays a little better than Keep. I know it's new, but it's top five at least. It's quintessential D&D.

    D&D 5E Sell 5th edition to a 4th edition fan...

I've played all the classics and some PF adventures, which are excellent. Keep on the Borderlands, a bit of Rise of the Runelords, Sunless Citadel, Keep on the Shadowfell (awful), Kingmaker...I like the iconic stuff. I must say pound for pound the 5E Starter Set is the most fun I've ever had...

    D&D 5E Sell 5th edition to a 4th edition fan...

I tried so hard to love 4E but eventually just gave up on it due to the combat length. It felt like we could only get one combat in and some roleplaying or two combats in a four hour game. I started modifying the structure of my game to put less emphasis on combat and more on roleplaying. I've...

Using a tabletop to write a novel

Huh...I'm surprised Hollywood would be looking at a private D&D game for inspiration. I'd think they'd start with books and comics and recognizable IPs. Those types of left-field movies are generally sort of unprofitable. He's deep...way deep...in that railroad danger zone territory. I tried to...
