D&D 5E Best Party Ever Thanks to Xanathars

The band idea is excellent. They're touring and converting civilians to their ways, building an EMO army of fans to conquer with.
  2. Phineas Q. Conundrum

    D&D 5E Immunity/Resistance to nonmagical attacks worth 50gp?

You could also just say it glows, but for some non-magical reason. Its just a sword that happened to be forged from glowing moon-ore.

D&D 5E Making Intelligence Less of a Dump Stat

Initiative with Intelligence modifier. Makes everything better. Also, fewer Perception when it should be Investigation. I've scared my players just enough to where its not always Int 8.
  4. Phineas Q. Conundrum

    D&D 5E Generators You Use for 5E

If I can interpret generators to include non-digital randomized ones, then definitely the wild magic table in the PHB. So much fun.
  5. Phineas Q. Conundrum

    D&D 5E Homebrewing Humans

I think if you look at other races you'll find this one is pretty strong. I would nix number 3; everyone I know would just use that and reduce their intelligence even lower. Int 8 parties are bad enough. Perhaps the skill proficiency could become one or more tool proficiencies?
  6. Phineas Q. Conundrum

D&D 5E Ok I have to ask..... what's with the Paladin hate on here?

I think the mechanical issues with paladin kind of mix with the player psychology/alignment issues. I think paladin is just two obvious in its power; too straightforward in its indestructibility combined with insane single target damage. This feeds that mindset of low teamwork and high...

D&D 5E My First Homebrew Magic Item, Thoughts?

I would personally standardize some of the aspects of the results so that you don't have to memorize how long they last. Maybe, unless otherwise specified, the effect lasts for 10 minutes, and any of the abilities where that would really not work could specify how long instead. With an item...

    D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores

I think overall we need to keep in mind the really excellent simplification that 5e really brings to the table. This is the kind of thing that could really confuse new players. If, mechanically speaking, ability scores lines up more with their names, Intelligence would be used for initiative...

    D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores

I think I like this. 10 plus your Wisdom modifier plus some spell armor; could be pretty cool.

    D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores

Although admittedly, Wisdom is very powerful as is because of Perception. I'm just not sure about changing the damage of spells from what is written, considering the other effects inflicted other than damage.

    D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores

This is a pretty serious overhaul. I happen to very much agree with the changes to attack bonus vs damage with Strength and Dexterity. It's a classic risk-reward system: reliability of damage or amount of damage. Quality decision. I think Wisdom and Intelligence are a bit scrambled here though...

D&D 5E My players are using my favorite classes against me lol

Not seeing a lot of high-Int type stuff. Hit them with mad Intelligence checks. Intelligence-requiring pseudo-puzzles and stuff that the party will actually not succeed at every once and a while. Also, to nullify the Paladin's Divine Smite, hordes of weak enemies that attack and then disengage...

    D&D 5E Fun & Engaging House Rules

I think these are all good. My only real changes are to always incentivize players to use Intelligence and Strength over Wisdom and Dexterity. Initiative uses Intelligence modifier. Escaping from a grapple is only using Strength. There are quite a few Dexterity and Wisdom type characters in the...
  14. Phineas Q. Conundrum

    D&D 5E Considering a little rule tweak

I think this is pretty interesting. On the one hand, when a player is making death saves their fate is totally and completely in the hands of the dice. They need to be helped by another player, usually in the form of healing and sometimes with a medicine check. I think taking control out of the...

D&D 5E Looking for some resurrection rules

All good things. I'm not sure if I would change the spells mechanics-wise, but I think some ways to make death a little but more meaningful are to really dig into the implications of being resurrected. I would make revival spells give the character a complete mental shuffling. Even if the soul...

    Character Idea Help

The character should deal mortal (not god level) damage but have special godlike powers of intuition, knowledge, etc. It might be fun if you could take random abilities from different classes that fit your theme and not just be restricted to one class. The DM will be ok with it (probably)...

D&D 5E Passive: It's not Just Perception - Passive Skill Checks

I really almost never use passive scores in anything but perception . In terms of that bird's next scenario, I would have had each player make an athletics check against the cliff DC. However, I can see why one would switch the roles, having the cliff make a "climbing difficulty" check against...
  18. Phineas Q. Conundrum

    D&D 5E Crossbows and loading

The loading property is what separates bows from crossbows. With extra attack, a bow will be more profitable in terms of damage, but the higher damage dice of crossbows and their inability to attack more than once per turn means that they are best used with a class that lacks extra attack. That...
  19. Phineas Q. Conundrum

D&D 5E Why do (non-deadly) traps exist in your campaign?

Traps should be interactive for the players, and there should be the possibility of a reward if a player finds a clever way to bypass the trap, and or repurpose it to use it against enemies. A trap which merely decreases some of the PC's hit points can be a useful mood-setting device, but...
  20. Phineas Q. Conundrum

    Death isn't deadly enough

This was my original focus, yes. I thought about it more, and realized it might be time to change the definition of 0 hit points from "unconscious" to something else. Maybe, at 0 hit points, you are merely staggering and barely conscious. That would make it more plausible for enemies to actually...
