One thing about UA is that unlike the original three core books, most copies were very poorly bound and didn't last for several decades, or even years. There may be dedicated 1e gamers whose copy has fallen apart.

I would think a 'complete compendium' single volume with the 'best of' the complete books might be an idea... EDIT OK, probably way too much work. But I"d reckon it would sell.

God, I hope this is not true as I really want WotC to do some reprints of some of the classic stuff, and I maintain perhaps futile hope of a return to the sale of PDFs. Still, assuming that your speculation is correct, it seems like WotC was selling or allowing the sale of PDFs for a long time...

Wasn't Fiend Folio 'almost' fully 3.5 compatible. It was released just before 3.5, but was edited to be very easily convertible. I forget the specifics...

Undoubtedly they are trying to win over customers; that's sort of their business objective. There's nothing 'sad' about that. I'm not sure I buy the 'it means 4e was a mistake' idea though. If so, then what does releasing the 1e books mean? WotC knows there's still demand for 3.5 books out...

I have a vague memory from the Dragonsfoot forums a few years back that MerricB claimed that this was the single guy on the planet that understood 1e initiative. I wonder if that Initiative booklet will make its way into the 1e reprints?

Isn't the initiative system for 1e insanely difficult to figure out, in the RAW?

If your going to have gold converted into XP, one thing to consider is if in your world Magic Items are commodified and easily purchased as in the default 3e world. In this case, characters acquiring gold is a double bonus because they get the gold and then buy magic items which further power...
