Iconic Outsiders (Tanaari, Baatezu, Yugoloths, Modrons, etc.) - How many species?

victorysaber

First Post
Prior to the Great Crash, it was established in a thread that the following were the epitomies of their respective alignments.

Baatezu (LE)
Tanari (CE)
Yugloths (NE)
Eladrin (CG)
Archons (LG)
Guardinals (NG)
Modrons (LN)
Slaad (CN)
Rilmani (TN)

Pardon my obessession (sp?) with the alignment-based outsiders.

Expanded from this thread
http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=162464
about types of Yugoloths, I'd like to ask if there is a list of all the alignment-based outsiders, their CRs, and their sources.

The objective of the list is to find the most powerful outsider of each alignment, and their CR, and just to looksee, I guess. Not counting "upgraded" versions, though, just base creatures.

Where do solars, planetars, and astral devas fall under? Are they guardinals, or just miscellaneous good outsiders?

So here's the list, and please tell me who has been missed out, the CR, and source?.

* stands for the most powerful non-unique outsiders of that kind.
# stands for unique outsiders of that kind.

I'm adding off the top of my head what I can without looking at books

Where do solars, planetars, and astral devas fall under? Are they guardinals, or just miscellaneous good outsiders?

Solars, Planetars, Devas, and a few others are classified as Aasimon (Angels in 3.5). They aren't natives of a particular plane, nor are they examplars of any particular Good alignment. They're direct servitors of and creations of specific good deities.

There are also Asuras, which are 'fallen' Archons (fallen from Law to Chaos). These don't fit neatly into any particular slot, but they tend to fill the same metaphysical niche as the Aasimon, often seeking to serve deific patrons to fill the void they feel after falling from the rigid order and defined purpose granted by the heirarchy of Mount Celestia when they were archons.

GUARDINALS the Neutral Good Iconics
*Leonal, (CR 12, MM)
Avoral (CR 9, MM)

Lupinal
Equinal
Cervidal
Ursinal
Musteval

ELADRIN the Chaotic Good Iconics
*Ghaele (CR 13, MM)
Bralani (CR 6, MM)
Lupinal (CR 5, MMII, 3.0)
Cervidal (CR 3, MMII, 3.0)

Lupinals and Cervidals are Guardinals.
Tulani - BoED

BAATEZU, the Lawful Evil Iconics
--not sure about the following as they do not have the baatezu subtype, can anyone clarify?--
Hellcat/Bezekira (CR 7, MM)
Chain Devil/Kyton (CR 6, MM) [why aren't Kyton Baatezu?]
Imp (CR 2, MM)

Bezekira are not Baatezu. They are a none Baatezu race native to Baator.

Kytons are also not Baatezu. Whether they predate or postdate the Baatezu migration and conquest of Baator is unknown, and their exact method of propagation is also unknown. They may breed (and there is precident for this), they may craft more of themselves from larvae, they may spontaneously erupt out of Jangling Hiter itself.

Imps are not Baatezu, but are created by Baatezu and can ultimately earn promotion into lemure status by pleasing their masters.

I'll also add Nupperibos - If you leave a larvae in Baator too long it will spontaneously become a nupperibo, which are the lowest form of the lifecycle of the Ancient Baatorians, the original native race of Baator. The Baatezu kill them and forcibly transform them into Lemures, terrified of ever allowing them to mature further, though very few Baatezu currently extant are old enough to recall the reasons behind their orders to do such.

TANAR'RI the Chaotic Evil Iconics
--not sure about the following as they do not have the tanar'ri subtype, can anyone clarify?--
Bebilith (CR 10, MM)
Quasit (CR 2, MM)

Bebiliths are non Tanar'ri CE fiends.

Quasits are created from larvae by the Tanar'ri, but are not tanar'ri themselves. They can however earn promotion and be transformed into a proper Tanar'ri (usually a mane, dretch, or rutterkin).

SLAADI the Chaotic Neutral Iconics
*Death Slaad (CR 13, MM) [not sure about this because his AL is CE]
(it's one of those random 3e changes that doesn't make much sense. Properly they should be CN, and Slaadi higher than them in the 'hierarchy' of Limbo are likewise CN, not CE.)

Add the:
Black Slaadi (ELH)
White Slaadi (ELH)

RILAMNI the True Neutral Iconics
*Aurumach (CR 17, FF)
Cuprilach (CR 12, FF)
Ferrumach (CR 9, FF)

Argenach (PSMC II)
Abiormach (PSMC II)
Plumach (PSMC II)

What book are they in? Anything 3.0/3.5?

Nothing by WotC in 3.x yet, but I strongly suspect that the FC:II will have them, as well as further mention of other, more advanced forms of their kind.

The 2e sources:

'Planes of Law'
'Faces of Evil: The Fiends'
'Hellbound: The Blood War'
'Tales from the Infinite Staircase'

There are probably a bunch of other 2e references in less detail, just a mention, etc. And I don't recall if they were mentioned in 1e.
