When a couple declares they are ready to be joined, they do not exchange rings; instead, they each cut off their little toe and feed it to one another. If the bones "pass" and are found mostly intact, the wedding is confirmed. The couple then wears their bone in small jars containing herbal preservatives as a symbol of their dedication.
If either bone fails to pass for any reason, the couple can never wed anyone and must remain single and celibate until death.
