I agree that as written in the 3.0 PH the straight-line requirement is only within the context of the charge action itself. On p. 117 it's very clear: "When making a charge, you move in a straight line for up to double your speed".
The FAQ ruling was definitely an addition to the rules, one that surprised me, but was sympathizable in light of the ready-partial-charge loophole.
