In my group we use holy symbols as wonderous items. Enchant your holy symbol as you would any wonderous item. However, those enchantments must be related somehow to your religion, domains, god etc. A dwarf cleric of moradin couldn't enchant his holy symbol with foxs cunning or comprehend languages for example but allowing it to cast bless 3x day or shield of faith or mimicking the phylactery of undead turning would be fine.
