Chapter Eleven: The Grand Temple of Lolth

Ardra - Eladrin Bladesinger Vovoidja
The Blue Monk - Half-Orc Monk Almoner
Hartaniel - Elf Barbarian Groom of the Stool
Lucky - Human Warlord Constable
Ryltar - Drow Avenger Constable
Scarlet - Human Fighter Constable
Varis - Half-Elf Warlock Hostarius

The adventurers had obtained another cylinder of blood veil from the evil drow. The drow planned to use the magical disease to weaken and kill the people of the heroes' home city. Once that was done, the drow could overtake the remaining populace, create a web tower and open a permanent gate to the Demonweb Pits.

The Cult of Urgathoa had been after this particular cylinder a well, but the adventurers slaughtered them. The weird, steaming blood still trickled from the fresh corpses of two leukodaemons.

Amongst the treasure horde in the drow enclave of House Darkweb were ritual scrolls. There were two scrolls of a seeming ritual that the heroes thought could be quite useful. Seeming allowed up to eight people to appear as another race for four hours.

The remaining cylinders of blood veil were housed in the Grand Temple of Lolth in the center of the drow city. Only drow were allowed in. With the Seeming ritual, the adventurers could gain access to the temple.

They made their way to a nice inn. Along the way, they heard many citizens talking about the black dragon, and how it had killed Lochar and then been slain. They surmised that the dragon killed Lochar as revenge. Lochar had tossed a cylinder of blood veil into the creature's mouth on his journey to Rilauven. Rumor had it that the High Priestess might cast raise dead on Lochar.

The adventurers got ready to rest. They questioned Solufine, the eladrin they'd freed, about things. He said that the drow had particularly enjoyed torturing him.

Ardra asked, "Before you were a slave, what were you?"

He said, "I am from the city of Senaliesse, in the Feywild. I sang! To the delight of many. Now you have saved me, and I will write a ballad about it."

Scarlet groaned, "No. Don't. That's just too much."

Hartaniel said, "I've never had a song written about me."

"Well prepare yourself for a treat", the eladrin boasted.

They talked with Solufine about whether he should go with them to the Grand Temple or say in the relative safety of the inn.

From inside Hartaniel's pack, Vecna said, "He should be worshiping me, don't you think?".

Teddy, Varis' skull familiar piped up. "What's the point? Nothing matters.. I can hear my mother screaming in the back end of this skull."

Varis eldritch blasted his familiar. Teddy screamed in pain, and then said disappointedly, "I'm still here."

Ardra asked Solufine what topics he liked to write music about. He said: "Unicorns, rainbows.... birds of hope..".

Ardra asked, "How about long-forgotten gods like Vecna?".

"I don't know who that is." The King of Terror had erased the memory of Vecna from most all of existence.

Hartaniel smiled and said, "Well have we got a secret for you!".

Solufine didn't find Vecna's ethos appealing.

Once rested, the adventurers gathered around Ardra. She cast Seeming, which made them all look like drow. A drawback to this ritual is that they had to stay within 25 feet of Ardra, or else the illusion would end. Ryltar, already a drow, was not included in the ritual.

They took to the streets and headed to the Grand Temple. Out of the top of it was a huge shaft of red light that shot all the way up to the underdark ceiling.

Two jade spiders guarded the ornate double doors. There were braziers holding purple fire. As the adventurers approached, wearing drow house insignias that Ryltar had been collecting from the drow the heroes had slain. The jade spiders scuttled to the side. They pulled the doors open, and stepped into the main hall.

The shaft of fiery light shot through a hole in the center of the room and extended upward. Apparently its' source was in a sub-level of the temple.

The walls of the hall were covered in murals of Lolth. In some, Lolth was depicted in her beautiful drow form. In others, she was shown as simply a drow head affixed to a massive spider body. In many, she loomed over a sacrificial table.

Scattered throughout the hall were about a dozen drow priestesses kneeling on rugs, praying to their foul deity. There were stairs that led up, and stairs that led down. A few male drow guards holding death lances stood guard solemnly, perhaps even fearfully. Nobody seemed to make note of the heroes' presence.

The adventurers decided to head up the stairs. They came to another large, circular hall. The thick column of light shot up through the center of this room through a hole in the floor as well.

There were many more drow priestesses in here as well. Many were gathered around a human - one of the plaguebringers sans mask - who they'd apparently been experimenting on. He was chained to the wall, and appeared to have been half-transformed into a spider-like humanoid.

In another part of the room was a cold-looking woman with a scythe, accompanied by four leukodaemons and six plaguebringers. This was Lady Andaisin and the Cult of Urgathoa! They had come to Rilauven to retrieve the cylinders of blood veil, but the drow had been making her wait for days. The drow seemed to be trying to cut the cult out of the process entirely, perhaps so the drow themselves could unleash the disease on Olwynn and perhaps keep some of the blood veil for their own nefarious purposes.

The adventurers recognized Lady Andaisin. They'd run into her during the Battle of Olwynn, and were none too keen on engaging her at this time.

Alone, across the room, was a lone seated drow studying a ritual book.

There were stairs leading further up, but there was a leukodaemon and a jade spider guarding them.

The adventurers sidled over near the Cult of Urgathoa and overheard the plaguebringers complaining to each other. They were sick of waiting. One of them said, "We should just go down there and take the cylinders!".

The heroes looked at each other. The blood veil was apparently held in the sub-levels of the temple.

They strolled over to the priestesses studying the poor plaguebringer who'd been turned half into a spider. After a bit more eavesdropping, they learned that the priestesses were trying to perfect a spell called Spiderform, which could turn the target into a tiny spider. It hadn't worked quite as they hoped on the plaguebringer.

They then approached the lone drow with the book. Ardra said carefully in drow, "You look concerned. What's the nature of your studies?".

She looked up at Ardra and asked, "Who are you?".

Ardra hadn't prepared a fake name. She pointed to her drow house insignia and asked, "Don't you recognize the house that I come from?".

The drow said, "This is important business that only Charinidia should know about. And I don't appreciate you trying to horn in on it."

"I merely thought perhaps I could help. If you do not need assistance, I will walk away."

Ardra explained/bluffed that her role in the temple was that of a researcher and that she was invaluable to some of the houses.

The drow looked her over and said, "You're no threat to me. I could kill you in an instant. Most everyone knows anyway... Apparently some of our agents have infiltrated the city of Olwynn. They're telling us through rituals to send them the cylinders and they can unleash them at once. But we're not sure who these agents are or how they are able to contact us!".

Ardra nodded, "That is worrying."

The drow continued. "As far as we understood, the drow were utterly repelled from Olwynn. And that's why we've been counting so much on those ones over there." She nodded in the direction of the Cult of Urgathoa.

The drow added, "They're also telling us to signal the drow on the World of Dracos to send their ships to Olwynn for the second wave of attacks. We're just trying to verify that this isn't some kind of trick from Olwynn's drow King, Thennrynnia."

The heroes became concerned. The city was still rebuilding from the first attack. Most of Olwynn's army had been sent to the city of Dunnwynn to repel the drow that occupied that city! So much so, that the King had to request the use of Korvosa's elite soldiers to deal with the similarly-occupied city of Starbed! Olwynn was in no way able to repel an attack by a fleet of spelljammers full of the drow from the nearby world of Dracos!

Ryltar the drow avenger was especially concerned. He'd just escaped the main drow city of Dracos before coming to Olwynn. His kind matron had been taken away, and he'd been forced to serve a drow necromancer. Fate intervened, and agents of the Raven Queen had come and killed the necromancer, which had given Ryltar the means to escape.

He'd been lucky not to have been killed by them once before for a slight transgression. Should the heroes face them now and fall, they either end Ryltar's soul to become Lolth's plaything, or they'd re-make him as an undead servant. Either fate was an affront to the Raven Queen.

Hartaniel urged the drow woman to consider this a trick from King Thennrynnia. Scarlet whispered to him that the secret agent contacting the drow could be Lady Tarentia. The Lady had a long history of treachery, and was likely outraged that the king had recently cost her her standing in the Summer Court of the Feywild (when he killed Ambrosius the unicorn-man a few sessions back).

Hartaniel grabbed a stack of books from a nearby desk and carried them casually. He was hoping to pilfer them. A priestess took notice and said to Ardra, "Why do you let your males touch holy texts of Lolth?".

Ardra explained that she'd carefully trained him herself. Hartaniel drew upon his history as a slave of orcs to act in a genuine manner.

The adventurers headed back to the main hall, and then took the stairs to the sub-level. the stairs led down at an angle, away from the shaft of light. The stairs led to a forge. Four grubby dwarves hammered away on anvils in a large cavern. Pools of glowing primordial ooze littered the area. Objects jutted out of the pools - adamantine ore, and some fully-formed adamantine arms and legs!

Two lolthbound goblins carried things from anvils to pools, and two man-sized spiders kept guard over a far set of stairs that went down even deeper. Three familiar faces watched over the whole scene. It was Commander Warda, the drow with the adamantine arms and legs, and her two male drow, each bearing an adamantine arm.

Warda looked at them and snarled, "What are you doing down here?".

Ardra gestured to Hartaniel, who was carrying the stack of books. "We are transporting this research from the group upstairs.."

Warda glowered and said, "To where?!"

Ardra started to make like she'd gone the wrong way.

Warda said, "I want to know exactly who you are and what you're doing here! Charinidia did not give you permission!"

The heroes paused..

Warda cracked her adamantite knuckle joints and said, "I'm starting to think we're going to have to crush you."

Then Warda looked at Ryltar, and recognized him. They'd both fought the black dragon in the Dragon's Tooth Inn!

She shouted, "Destroy them!".

Ardra summoned her armor and her bladesong kicked in (Ryan had actually made a song and played it on his phone... awesome). The heroes tried to stay close to Ardra so they wouldn't break the Seeming.

Ardra raced forward and battled Warda and her men. The spiders and goblins converged on the rest of the heroes. One of her men broke away from Ardra, ran up to Hartaniel and punched the eladrin with his adamantine arm. Hartaniel was knocked back 10 feet, too far from Ardra. His illusory appearance as a drow faded.

One of the goblins let out a thunder blast from his mouth that staggered the group.

Scarlet and Ryltar joined Ardra in battling Commander Warva. They quickly bloodied her. Scarlet grabbed hold of her and slashed away with her broken blade. Varis pelted her with an eldritch blast as well.

Warda cracked Scarlet in the chest with an adamantine punch, sending her hurtling back fifteen feet.

Hartaniel faced off with one of the goblins and stabbed it to death. Then he flung its' corpse at a nearby drow. The drow stumbled and then turned right into the Blue Monk, who was trying to make his way to the Commander. The drow punched the Monk, sending him flying.

Ryltar sliced into Warda with his scythe, bloodying her badly. Then he put his hand on her head, uttered a prayer to the Raven Queen, and sent her soul to the Shadowfell.

Lucky turned and stabbed a drow, delivering a mortal wound. Ardra finished him off with a magical missile, and then absorbed his soul into a gem on her helm of seven deaths.

Scarlet turned and battled the last remaining drow. The Blue Monk fired off a crossbow bolt, but the drow deflected the shot with his arm. Ardra ran up and cut that drow down, absorbing his soul into her helm as well.

Ryltar sliced through the other goblin, and the heroes made quick work of the spiders.

As the dust settled, four dirty dwarves fearfully peeked up from behind their anvils.
Hartaniel asked them, "What are you making?".

Ryltar added, "Also, don't worry. Everything's fine."

One of the dwarves took a deep breath, walked over to the primal mud, and pulled out an adamantine hand - fully formed. The heroes gasped.

Lucky said, "All right everyone, stock up. You might need them for a rainy day."

Scarlet pulled out her bag of holding and speculated that they might be able to sell them to Curra the sorceress.

Hartaniel studied the primal mud. He could see that the dwarves used it to cool the adamantite. The mud also seemed to have healing properties. Ardra understood that when making adamantine limbs, it took a year for them to form and cool.

The mud also had additional benefits for fey, making them faster and healing them more effectively. Hartaniel scooped up a bunch in a container and put it in his pack.

Then they looked at the dead drow, with all their shiny, glowing, fully-working adamantine limbs.

Lucky sighed and got to hacking. She stuff the severed limbs into Scarlet's bag.

Ardra asked the dwarves if they'd seen the cylinders. The dwarves flinched and said, "Don't hurt me!".

Lucky told the heroes they should free the dwarves. "They have valuable knowledge on how to make limbs..!".

The heroes quietly discussed killing them and stuffing their corpses in the bag of holding, and then arise them once they were back in Olwynn.

They told the dwarves to wait in the forge. The heroes then patched up their wounds and headed down the stairs.

The stairs angled back toward the temple. They made their way out of the forge and down into the lowest level beneath the temple. After walking through a hallway half submerged in molten magma, they peeked around a corner to see drow gathered around the base of the shaft of light that shot through the temple's roof and all the way to the underdark cavern's ceiling! Four priestesses were around it, chanting, led by a high priestess in elaborate garb. She could only be Charinidia, high priestess of the temple.

Near the heroes were two male guards holding tall, grey death lances.

The column of light flickered like fire, or rather, drow darkfire. Suddenly it flared to life and fired off three beams of darkfire at the heroes! One shot went wide, but the other two passed through stone walls and struck Varis and Ardra! Both were shrouded in darkfire, making it impossible for them to hide. The darkfire also guided the attacks of the drow.

The drow shouted in alarm and turned toward where the heroes lurked. The guards readied their death lances as the four priestesses pulled out their fang whips, each ending in four snake heads. The heroes' hearts sank a little as Charinida pulled out a non-descript rod and uttered a command word, causing three purple tentacles to extend out. They'd battled a priestess with a tentacle rod once before, aboard the Sreen Ultrin, and they'd nearly been defeated.

Ardra made her way into the room and engaged a drow guard. The guard plunged his death lance into her gut. She watched in horror as shadowy tendrils coiled down the lance, entered her body and drained her very soul (lost 2 surges)!

The Blue Monk raced in near her and the priestesses launched off pain web and spider curse spells which wracked the monk with necrotic energy. He fell to the ground, dying!

Scarlet blew by the guards and made her way around the priestesses. She wanted to get at Charinidia herself. Scarlet grabbed hold of Charinidia's arm and stabbed at her with her broken blade.

Charinidia was furious. She lashed at the bandit with the tentacles, bloodying her. Then she commanded her priestesses to finish off the rivvil (human). The fang whips came down, and Scarlet fell to the ground in a bloody heap.

Varis, Ryltar and Hartaniel made their way back through the magma hallway and opened a double door in it, which also provided access to the main hall where the column of darkfire was. A guard was by the door. As the drow turned, Varis chanted and called forth a burning spray, scorching the drow guard. The dark elf sneered and leveled his death lance.

Hartaniel stabbed the guard and kicked him to the ground. Ryltar brought his scythe down on the prone guard, slashing deep into his neck and killing him (with a critical). One of the two guards was slain.

Varis made his way past the corpse and through the doorway, and was struck with spells from the priestess, which dropped him to the ground. The boy warlock was dying...

Lucky made her way past the other guard, and knelt down next to Ardra and The Blue Monk. She healed them and said, "Life is probably barely worth living". Both opened their eyes, conscious and back in the fight. Ardra called on the power of the helm of seven deaths, releasing the souls of Cabbagehead and a drow warrior from the Sreen Ultrin in exchange for a burst of magical healing powered by a portion of their spirits.

As Lucky stood up, the guard stabbed her with his death lance (Another critical by me... my dice were on fire).

The Blue Monk staggered to his feet. The column fired off another beam of darkfire that hit him and shrouded him in evil drow magic. This made him furious. The half-orc pulled out a container of his trademark blue dust, and covered his hands in it. Then, he ran in an arc, allowing him to run past each enemy and strike them. He became a screaming cloud of blue dust, punching the drow in the face, sending them reeling.

Hartaniel let out an orcish war cry as he watched his ally devastate the drow.

Scarlet, bloody and prone, saw The Blue Monk's epic assault and said calmly, "Go team."

Lucky disengaged the drow guard and began shouting out tactical orders. She feinted, drawing Charinidia closer. As she dodged the purple tentacles, She created openings for Ardra, Ryltar and Hartaniel to charge the drow priestess. Charinidia shrieked as she was stabbed over and over.

Ryltar then spun and slashed a nearby drow priestesses. He could sense she was close to death. He placed his palm on her head and uttered a prayer to the Raven Queen. The drow's spirit left her body. Her corpse plopped to the ground.

The drow guard turned away from Lucky and stabbed Hartaniel (another critical!). Shadowy tendrils wound into his body, infecting his soul (draining him of two surges). Charinidia then brought down the tentacles on the eladrin, staggering him and bloodying him badly. A priestess struck him with her fang whip. He succumbed to the many snake bites and fell to the ground, dying.

Ardra teleported away from the battle to bandage a nasty wound (she was now out of surges!). But the nearby drow guard ran over and stabbed his lance into her (yes another critical), dropping her for good (poor Ardra was out of surges and down - there was no way for the party to heal her).

Lucky leaned over Varis' body. He had a faint pulse. She pulled out a flask and dumped its' contents into his mouth. Then she realized she'd given him booze instead of a healing potion, and dumped that down his throat. Varis coughed and awoke. He could taste the alcohol on his lips. He looked up at Lucky and said, "Tastes like dwarf."

She pulled him to his feet. Then he reached out and drew a tiny piece of Ryltar's soul, transformed it into eldritch energy, and launched an eldritch blast into Charinidia. She shrieked and spit blood.

Charinidia made her way away from the column of darkfire, to an elevated area where there was an altar of Lolth. The slab on the altar had a human-sized impression in it, to catch and drain the blood of those sacrificed upon it.

Lucky made her way to Hartaniel. She fed him a potion, which revived him. He reached into his pack and retrieved his container of primal mud. He smeared it over himself, healing his wounds. He got to his feet, adjusting his owlbear skull helmet.

The Blue Monk and Ryltar went after Charinidia. Ryltar sliced a bloody gash in her side. Then Ryltar took aim from afar and fired off one more eldritch bolt. The bolt exploded through her chest. Her limp body tipped back, half in the depression in the altar. Her blood began to fill it.

The remaining three priestesses and the guard looked around. Half of the heroes were dying. With their leader dead, one of them could seize the opportunity and become the new high priestess. All they had to do was finish off the invaders.

The drow guard stabbed Ryltar with the death lance. A priestess struck Varis with her fang whip. Scarlet grabbed a priestess and smashed her into a pillar. Another priestess brought down her fang whip on the bandit. The snakes bit deep into her shoulders, creating little streams of blood (Scarlet had 6 hit points left).

Hartaniel plunged his blade through a priestess, killing her. Then he tossed her body into another, killing that priestess as well!

The heroes rallied and made quick work of the final two.

They fell to their knees, exhausted and badly wounded. They tended to Ardra as best they could. She was badly hurt, but in time she would re-awaken.

They quickly searched the place before the many drow from above realized what they'd done. They found the cylinders in a secret alcove in Charinidia's room. In the alcove was an insane human of great strength chained to the wall with a ball gag in his mouth. Near him was a floatchest brimming over with cylinders. They'd found every last canister of blood veil!

They snatched up Charinidia's ritual book and all the magic items and gems they could carry. Then they stood over a teleport circle, ready to use a newly-found scroll of linked portal.

Where would they go? They talked in hushed tones. Olwynn? Echo Warrens? Even the probably-abandoned enclave of Honglath..? All they knew for sure was that they had to get out of Rilauven right away.

Chapter Twelve: The Shadowborn

Ardra - Eladrin Bladesinger Vovoidja
The Blue Monk - Half-Orc Monk Almoner
Hartaniel - Elf Barbarian Groom of the Stool
Ryltar - Drow Avenger Constable
Scarlet - Human Fighter Constable
Varis - Half-Elf Warlock Hostarius

Charinida was dead, but the heroes were still in her palace in the middle of the drow city. Ardra was unconscious, hurt badly and would not awake any time soon. There was a ritual circle nearby.

Scarlet pointed out that the drow might raise Charinidia from the dead. She thought it would be a good idea to toss her in the pool of magma down there. The heroes agreed, and decided to throw all the drow corpses in, including the bodies from up in the forge.

When the heroes headed back up into the forge, the four dwarves got scared and hid behind their anvils.

Hartaniel said to them, "If you'd like to be free, come with us. If you'd like to stay here and serve your masters, you may stay."

The dwarves looked at each other and cautiously approached the heroes. One of them said, "The name's Lumpy."

The adventurers looked at each other. Hartaniel asked, "Who named you?".

Lumpy shrugged and said, "That's just what we call each other. We don't know our real names. That's Grumpy over there...", He pointed to a crabby looking dwarf. Then he pointed to a naive dwarf and said, "And that's Chumpy." The last dwarf was behind an anvil. "...And that one's Humpy. Don't go back there."

The adventurers asked the dwarves to help carry the bodies down. The dwarven agreed, and began to whistle as they scooped up the corpses of their former tormentors.

As they dumped the last of the bodies in, Scarlet had another idea. She wanted to set off the blood veil in the temple! The cylinders had a kind of magical timer on them, so the heroes decided to set a timer, leave, and then hopefully the blood veil would spray and infect the drow of the temple.

Scarlet surmised that the drow would have to beg the Cult of Urgathoa to cure them.

The freed eladrin, Solufine, sat on the steps of the altar of Lolth and said, "That was quite a battle! It's so hot in here..."

Hartaniel said, "When you write a song about this, make sure to mention Hartaniel Draedsmasher."

Solufine smiled and said, "Well, that's quite... smashing!". Then he laughed at his own joke.

The Blue Monk scowled and mentioned that all Solufine had done was sit on his ass. Solufine explained that he was just very weak after years of being enslaved by the drow. "I can hardly wait to get back to Senaliesse! It's built upon silver trees, you know..."

Hartaniel asked Vecna, who was in his lantern, if their giant bird, Dark Secret, had made it to Echo Warrens with the stolen boat. Vecna confirmed that Dark Secret had.

Hartaniel turned to the dwarves and said, "When you travel with us, you travel with a god."

Chumpy's eyes went wide and he said, "Really..?"

Grumpy folded his arms and said, "You're not a god."

Ryltar wondered aloud, "Why are we giving the evil god believers?".

They set the timer on the cylinder and used the Linked Portal ritual to teleport from Rilauven back to the Underdark town of Echo Warrens. They appeared in the town square. Vecna flared with energy. They could hear the familiar howl, the sound that lead to Echo Madness.

Two members of the goblin gang called the Cave Whippin Boyz were hanging around - Cross-Eyed Piffy and Boss Corker. Hartaniel walked up to Boss Corker, slapped him on the back and said, "Let's get some bats!".

Boss Corker said, "Well h'ain't that a treat!", and he yelled out for the Cave Whippin Boyz.

Boss Corker confirmed that Dark Secret had brought the drow ship, and that the dwarven captain was preparing to launch it. The captain, Lombard Thickbeard, had his previous ship destroyed by the Black Dragon. The ship was the hero's gift to him.

They also spotted Dark Secret flying up by the tall cavern ceiling.

The Blue Monk headed to The Muddy Barrel tavern. Inside, he saw the beautiful drow, Vaona. She was wearing a home-made tabard emblazoned with the symbol of Vecna.

She gasped when she saw The Blue Monk. She ran over and hugged him.

He smiled and said, "That's right, I'm here."

The other patrons of the bar scowled, jealous.

Then she asked, "Where's the great and mighty Vecna?"

The Monk asked, "Aren't you interested in the Raven Queen, maybe..?"

"Raven Queen? You can't just keep makin' up gods and makin' me worship em, now."

He bought her a drink. He explained that the heroes were just passing through. She decided to go with him, even though the Echo Madness would make it difficult for her to survive outside the cavern.

The other adventurers approached Lombard on the drow ship. Solufine held his nose. He said, this town is quite.... ugghh... You're friends with these people?".

"Friends..?", Scarlet asked.

Solufine continued, "My friends include Queen Morwel, of the Court of Stars!".

Scarlet said, "You know what that is? That's really exciting."

"I'll have you know that I'm related to her former lover."

The heroes rolled their eyes. Solufine was a bit angry. He said, "Please do not insult the great Vaeros! He passed away. The whole city mourned."

The Blue Monk and Vaona had arrived. The Monk asked, "Did you watch him die? Did you just stand there and do nothing?".

"No, good sir! He went to The Abyss alone to rescue some captured eladrin. He was killed trying to save them. This is why everyone reveres Vaeros!"

"Sounds like an idiot...", said Varis, the 12-year old human warlock.

Solufine was outraged. He looked at the boy and stammered, "You - you are lucky you are young and naive! Tell me when you are 18 so that I may slap you."

Varis asked his allies, "Can I kill him?".

His skull familiar, Teddy, said, "Why bother? We'll all be dead soon anyways.

They visited with the Incunabulum, who were overjoyed to see their god, Vecna, again.

Ryltar said sarcastically, "It's so great that we're doing this. Why are we doing this?"

Scalret said, "There's worse things we could be doing."

Hartaniel went back to Lombard's ship. The dwarf thanked him. Hartaniel showed him the tooth of the black dragon. he told Lombard he was free to sail the Sea of Black Blood without fear of the dragon. Then he told Lombard to consider worshiping Vecna...

Then it was time to leave. The whole town gathered around the teleport circle to say goodbye to Vaona.

The adventurers used the other scroll of linked portal and appeared in the city of Olwynn. With them were the four dwarves, Dark Secret, Solufine and Vaona. They appeared on the city's teleport platform, which held eight ritual circles and a magical lift which led beneath the city. Down there was Thunderspire Labyrinth and the Seven-Pillared Hall, which was home to Ardra's Mages of Saruun.

The streets were busy, full of citizens wearing loincloths, gold arm and leg bands and little else. Wall monkeys were perched on the sides of half-destroyed buildings, looking for things to snatch with their sticky fingers. Panda-people were pulling rikshaws.

Vaona said, "Wow this is big! I'm a-scared!"

"It's OK," said The Blue Monk.

Scarlet looked at Vaona, who wore nothing but a tabard bearing the symbol of Vecna. "You're already dressed the part", she said.

Scarlet activated the magic of her armor, converting it into the standard dress of Olwynn, aka almost nothing.

They all climbed onto their giant Vecna-bird, Dark Secret, and flew to Moonstone Keep, which overlooked the city.

The adventurers made their way to the throne room to give the King and the council a full report. The councilmembers in the room were Strom Wakeman (of The Us), Ambril (of The Hundred), and Fathom Silverfist (of the Silverfist clan, replacing the slain Phideas Silverfist). Another deva was standing next to Ambril.

The heroes told the King and the council everything. The King, a skillful ritualist, said he'd be able to rid Vaona of Echo Madness, and could also petition Bwimb 2 on Ryltar's behalf.

The King became alarmed when he learned that there were apparently drow spies in the city, and that drow ships from the world of Dracos were set to invade Olwynn. The army of Olwynn was trying to free the nearby city of Dunnwynn from drow control. He'd already had to commandeer the elite army of Korvosa to deal with the similarly drow-held city of Starbed. Olwynn's resources had already been stretched to the limit.

As the city, still re-building from the last drow attack, prepared for a second invasion, the heroes headed to their chambers in the castle to sleep. The dwarves, Solufine and Vaona (who was cured by a ritual cast by the king) were all given guest quarters to rest in.

Scarlet headed to the fey park in the city, where the satyr Benedictus (who she'd met during the party at Moonstone Keep before the heroes' trip to Rilauven) lived in caves by a rainbow river. She spent some "alone time" with him, then brought the four dwarves there. Scarlet asked the to be part of her bandit gang that she was forming along with Benedictus.

Chumpy said, "That sounds pretty good to me! I want to make money".

Grumpy said, "I'm so tired. I just want to sleep."

Lumpy, their leader, thought for a moment. Then he said, "All right. We'll do it."

The next day, they met with the King and talked about the mark they'd found on the cylinders. The mark was that of Ardra's grandfather. The adventurers decided to go to his house at the docks to see if he knew anything that might help them find the Cult of Urgathoa's lair in the city.

They arrived at the house. It was quite run-down. Ardra said, "My grandfather's become quite reclusive since the accident...". She hadn't told the heroes that her grandfather was once a swordmage who had taught her how to infuse her own blade with magic. Someone had tried to kill him with a magical explosion, and since then he'd frowned on magic and tried to steer Ardra away from magic use...

She knocked on the front door. Orem, her grandfather, opened the door. He was a bald eladrin. Orem greeted her, disappointed that she was wearing the mask of the Mages of Saruun.

Orem looked at the heroes with her and asked, is this your adventuring party? Which one's the cleric?". The heroes looked at each other and shrugged. "You don't have a cleric?! Find another group!".

Ryltar aid, "Well we have a lady who heals us sometimes-"

Orem interrupted, "You're one of those drow! Shut up. What can I do for you, Ardra?".

Ardra was quite embarrassed. She said, "We have some questions about your handiwork...". She asked him about the cylinders he'd made, that the Cult of Urgathoa had somehow got in possession of. He said he'd kept a log of all his sales, and invited the party in while he looked.

Hartaniel planted himself by a window and took a look outside. He noticed a number of strange individuals pulling themselves out of the water and on to the dock. They wore red and black armor, and had helmets shaped like the heads of praying mantises. They held sawtooth sabres - swords with a very jagged edge. Hartaniel called out a warning.

Orem shook his head. "You were followed?! Ardra, you've got to dump this group, I'm sorry..."

Ardra asked him not to discuss this now. She chanted, beginning to summon her armor.

He asked, "You're not still casting spells, are you?". In reply, her armor appeared on her in flash of light. He frowned.

She grabbed her blade, hoping to impress Orem with the new skills she'd acquired since he'd last seen her.

Scarlet kicked the side door open, ran toward one of the red mantis assassins. She grabbed him and sliced him with her broken blade. Another nearby moved in and flanked her.

The Blue Monk crashed through a window to help Scarlet. Ryltar was close behind, phasing through a wall. Ryltar sliced into one of the assassins with his scythe.

Other mantis assassins were near the front door. Two of them were spellcasters, called mist mages. They cast spells through the front window, One use a spell to fill the room beyond with red mist. Then the other cast a Misty tendrils spell, striking those inside and knocking them back.

Ardra came out the side door and tried to run past the red mantis assassins to get to the spellcasters in front, but one of the assassins slashed her deeply with his sawtooth sabre (A critical). She staggered around to the front and stabbed one of the mist mages.

Varis cast ethereal stride, made his way outside and pelted a mist mage with spells.

Scarlet, the Monk and Ryltar were making quick work of the assassins by the side door. Ryltar killed one of the assassins. The assassin fell to the ground, and his body became a red mist, which dissipated in moments. Only his armor and his sawtooth sabre remained. Scarlet left them, and came around front to help Ardra and Varis.

A mist mage pulled out a strange card, perhaps from a tarot deck or some other kind of magical deck. The ground underneath him shimmered, and a magical image identical to the image on the card appeared. It flared, and the mist mage cast a fire spell which scorched Varis, Scarlet and Ardra. Then, a weird energy swirled and sent the heroes flying in random directions. Varis was knocked off the dock and into the water.

Varis grabbed hold of the slippery post, and slowly pulled himself out of the water and onto the dock.

Ardra luckily landed in shallow water, which put out the fire. She was hurt very badly. She was also mortified. Her grandfather was watching, and here she was getting bested by mantis-men. The Blue Monk ran over and gave her a potion.

Hartaniel ran out and aided her, bloodying an assassin. He swung again, and killed it.

Then, Ardra's grandfather Orem came out with his old sword. He slashed into an assassin.

Scarlet was still on fire from the weird spell. She fell to the ground, dying. The Blue Monk came over and attacked the mist mages and remaining assassins with a series of blows. He was a cloud of blue fury, killing one, and closing the dead man's eyes before he even fell to the ground.

Ryltar ran into the hut, which was still full of red mist. He opened the front door and said in drow: "Death comes for you...". Then he killed the assassin.

Ardra had taken a moment to bandage her wounds.

Orem called out to her, "You know, if you had a cleric, he could heal you with a spell! Don't try anything with your fancy magic - now is not the time."

Orem noticed Varis, wet from the ocean, on the dock casting spells. Orem asked aloud, "When did a little boy get here?!

Varis said, "I've been here the entire time, senile old man...."

Ardra sighed. "Not now, grandpa!"

Orem shouted to the young warlock, "Little boy, go hide!".

Varis fired an eldritch blast at Orem's feet. He looked at the warlock, incredulous. Ardra felt rage deep in her bones. Varis may have been an ally to her, but if any of the heroes should strike her grandfather...

Orem called out, "The boy just shot at me! He's one of the enemy! Little boy, where's your mother? You deserve a spanking!".

Once ready to rejoin the battle, Ardra ran over to Scarlet and revived her with a potion. Scarlet got up and plunged her blade into a mist mage, killing him. He, like all the others, turned to red mist. His sword, armor, and the strange card all fell to the ground. Scarlet picked up the card.

Her mind was flooded with a vision. It was of Mari, the goddess of luck, when she was a mortal on the world of Dracos. She was kissing a leader of the coalition during the battle against the githyanki.

Scarlet shook it off. Could this card be one of Mari's Deck of Many Things? How did it get in the possession of the mist mage? The last Scarlet knew, The King of Terror himself had drawn from the deck and imprisoned himself in some unknown world.

As Scarlet was distracted by the card, she was struck with a misty tendrils spell and fell unconscious.

The heroes finished off the red mantis assassins and mist mages. Every last one of them turned to mist. The adventurers wondered why they had attacked and who they were. They caught their breath.

Orem shook his head. "You got no cleric. And whose kid is this?!".

Varis grumbled and went over to Scarlet, who was still unconscious. He snatched the card from her. As he touched the card, he too had a vision of Mari. His vision was of Mari in the final battle with the githyanki emporer Zetch'r'r'r, where she slew all four of his handmaidens and teleported Zetch'r'r'r down the where her allies were all in mere seconds (This happened in the Scales of War campaign. Summary is here: Adv78 - Scales of War).

Orem said to Ardra, "It's a good thing your mother isn't here. She's safe in the city of Sigil, which is where you should go... so you'll be safe from numbskulls like this!" He was referring to the heroes. He explained that the back door to his hut was a portal to Sigil, activated when he touched his sword to the door. It didn't always work, though.

Hartaniel asked, "What is wrong with you, old man? This is your granddaughter you're talking to.".

Orem said, "My granddaughter should not be running around casting spells."

Hartaniel began to talk of his uncle, the hero, Hirbe.

Orem said, "That's very nice. I'm so happy for your uncle." Then he turned and looked over his scrolls. He found the name of the person who'd bought 20 cylinders from him. It was a man named Tark Gravin. As Orem remembered, Tark was something of an alchemist. Orem didn't know where Tark was presently.

The heroes asked Orem if he knew who the assassins were. He said, "They may have been sent by... the void things."

Ryltar said, I assume you're going to explain, right?"

"It's none of your business."

Ryltar said, "OK. Screw you, too, old man."

Ardra felt a combination of shame and anger. While her grandfather was certainly blunt, she was disappointed that Ryltar and the others would dare to speak to him in such a manner. This was compounded when The Blue Monk turned to her, arms folded, and said, "Ardra, your grandfather is a prick."

Some more back and forth followed. Orem finally sighed, went into his room, and put away his weapon. He came out, muttering, "I can't believe I had to use the warning sword..."

Hartaniel asked to see the sword. Orem brought it back out and showed it to him.

Hartaniel asked to hold it. Orem told him and the others to get out. But he wanted Ardra to stay, so he could take her to Sigil. Hartaneil continued to ask about the sword, so Orem threatened to call the Immortal bound to the docks - Lord Saligia Foul - over here to deal with Hartaniel.

Orem began to rant, "These are the worst adventurers I've ever seen in my life! You need one fighter in a loincloth. You need one thief with a hood on who never says anything. And a wizard with a pointy hat!"

Scarlet smiled and activated her magic armor. It changed so that Scarlet was wearing a loincloth and a metal bra, like a classic female fighter.

Orem took one look approvingly and said, "She can stay, the rest of you get out of here."

Hartaniel tried buttering him up. Ryltar said they should probably leave 'the crankiest guy in Olwynn' and go look for Tark Gravin. Hartaniel quietly hissed, "I want that sword!".

Ardra was aghast. The mask on her helm of seven deaths hid her reaction. Not only had the heroes disrespected her beloved Grandfather, but now Hartaniel was trying to steal from him.

The adventurers began to leave. They grabbed some of the assassins' stuff. The mantis helmets had a power to see invisible for a short time. Hartaniel asked Ardra to use a ritual to transfer the enchantment to the owlbear skull he wore on his head.

The heroes said farewell to Orem and spent the rest of the day walking the streets of Olwynn searching for Tark Graven, the man who'd bought the cylinders. They didn't have a lot of luck, as Olwynn was home to over a million people.

They also were able to sell the adamantite Ore they'd acquired from the drow temple's forge. They received quite a nice pile of gold. Then they went and bought some potions and other equipment.

Night fell and the exhausted adventurers returned to Moonstone Keep. Hartaniel went into the War Room, where Fathom Silverfist was looking over a map of Dunnwynn and tracking the army's movements.

Fathom was not overly welcoming to Hartaniel. He told her about the red mantis assassins and asked her if she knew anything about them. She did. She explained that the King of Terror had three exarchs who each had cults operating in the area. Up until now, the heroes had been dealing with the cult of an exarch named Urgathoa.

But she knew that the Red Mantis Assassins were devoted to another exarch - Achaekek, He Who Walks in Blood. The assassins had likely been sent to avenge the theft of the cylinders.

Ryltar went to the throne room and watched the King as he dealt with his council and the efforts to rebuild the city, as well as try to gather forces to repel the possible attack from the drow of Dracos. Ryltar noticed that the King looked skinnier. Ryltar became a bit alarmed. He knew that if the King did not kill someone with Blackrazor every week or two, he'd transform into a hideous wight forever. The King looked a bit, well, wight-ish.

Scarlet stayed in the caves with Benedictus, and discussed the idea of buying a place outside the city to use as a base of operations.

Ardra went to her room in the Keep and learned the Transfer Enchantment ritual, so that she could shift the Red Mantis helmet's powers to Hartaniel's owlbear skull helmet.

The Blue Monk headed to the ruined temple that serve as the home to The Blue Monks. He looked there for Elder Teal and the monks, but found the place to be utterly abandoned.

A man approached him from across the street. He was bald and had a long black mustache. His armor bore the symbol of The Silverfists. He was Kromar Silverfist. Kromar smirked and said, "Oh, you didn't hear, eh?".

The Blue Monk said, "No - I didn't."

"They're all in prison."

"Why are they in prison?"

"Attempted robbery. The Blue Monks tried to rob a caravan bearing potions that came through the city. It's a good thing you weren't around, or you might have been caught up in it too."

"Are you threatening me?"

"I'm just making an observation."

The Blue Monk became angry. He knew that his fellow monks would never commit robbery. This was clearly a scheme of The Silverfists, revenge for The Monk getting into an altercation with Phideas Silverfist which led to Phideas being killed by the King.

The City of Olwynn's prison was inside one of the city's five guardian immortals - The Unfathomable One, the being who claimed to have evolved into a kind of walking Quasi-Dimension. All prisoners were held in a strange nether-space where they didn't need to breathe or eat.

The Blue Monk began to think about breaking them out, but knew that the immortals were almost demi-gods themselves. To challenge The Unfathomable One was probably suicide.

Kromar began to walk away. The Blue Monk said, "I don't like you."

Kromar stopped walking. Without turning around, he said, "Likewise. Say hi to the King for me." Then Kromar walked down the street and disappeared into the night.

Ryltar began to trance. He felt exhausted. The Curse of Bwimb was taking its' toll.

The next morning, The Blue Monk met with the King, hoping to get the Monks freed. Fathom Silverfist was there as well, and explained that the Monks would get a trial soon.

Ryltar asked King Thennrynnia to cast a ritual so that they could talk with Bwimb 2, to see if there was any way to get the curse removed. The King brought all the heroes to the ritual room. There, the King stood before a ritual circle inlaid with runes of silver.

He explained that he'd be casting a ritual called Summon Demon which would summon a fragment of Bwimb's will. The heroes could speak with her verbally or telepathically.

He chanted and the air swirled with magic. There was a burst of glowing smoke, and then, the translucent image of Bwimb 2 appeared! She was at least 12 feet tall and covered in slime. Demonic worms crawled freely over her flesh.

She shrieked in anger. The King looked at Ryltar. Ryltar muttered "Great...".

Ryltar said, "Hello... ...Worm Lady. How may I remove-"

She interrupted, "My name is Bwimb! The Paraelemental Princess of Ooze! You will address me accordingly! Why have you summoned me?!"

Ryltar said, "I somehow came to have your touch upon me-"

She interrupted again. "You're wearing a mud sorcerer's ring, aren't you?"

Ryltar had indeed obtained the ring when the adventurers made their way through the mud sorcerer's tomb on Cat Island...

"You're the ones who went to Cat Island!". She reached out to crush Ryltar in her grip, but her translucent hand could not penetrate the boundaries of the King's ritual circle.

Ryltar feigned injuries mockingly, groaning "Ohh - Ow! Owww!", sarcastically.

Bwimb hissed, "You defiled the tomb of one of my finest sorcerers!".

Ryltar said, "...Sorry?".

"Why are you wasting my time?", she asked angrily.

"I can't sleep-"

She threw her head back and laughed. "The curse! Ha ha ha! The tiny little snake!".

Ryltar said "Yes.." and mocked her laughter.

"Ingenious, wasn't it?".

The heroes agreed. Scarlet began to point out that the snake actually helped them a bit.

Bwimb rubbed her chin and said, "I could decide to let the curse go. But why would I do that?!".

Hartaniel asked, "What could we do in return?".

She looked at him and said, "What could you do for me? Could you destroy Ben-Hadar, the Archomental of Good Water?"

Ryltar said, "No, and that doesn't sound like something we're interested in."

"Well! Then there's nothing! And when you sleep, you'll dream of me! Ha ha ha!".

The King was uneasy. Bwimb was a powerful enemy, and the adventurers had been mocking her to her face. He knew there was a good chance that she'd sent some horrid ooze creatures to destroy them if they weren't careful.

Bwimb said, "Well you've been thoroughly unconvincing, boy!"

Ryltar said, "Very well, I'll petition for the Raven Queen's help then!".

Bwimb laughed and said, "Perhaps I'll send some mud grues to destroy you all for not addressing me properly."

Scarlet said, "That worked really well last time." Bwimb laughed at Scarlet's insolence. Scarlet again pointed out that the snake aided the heroes in the tomb. Bwimb chanted, and Ryltar's mud sorcerer's ring glowed.

Ryltar asked his friends if he should take off the ring. They shrugged. King Thennrynia was more than alarmed. He told them that this was not going well at all.

"Ryltar said, Tell me about it!".

King Thennrynnia ended the ritual. The image of Bwimb disappeared.

The King sighed and shook his head. Ryltar said he'd just deal with the curse until he could find a cure. The King left, and plodded back to his throne for a long day.

The heroes had breakfast. Then they were met by Paunchcrammer, Zanestra Shadowborn's imp sidekick. He had a live rat in his hand, and bit its' head off. The heroes were shocked. Paunchcrammer had up until now been very polite and often offered people orange juice. Zanestra had chided him for not being evil enough...

Varis said, "Zanestra asked you to do that specifically, didn't she?"

Paunchcrammer gave a sinister grin and said, "No - I wanted to do it!".

The adventurers congratulated him. He told them that Zanestra wanted to talk to them, at the Shadowborn Clock Tower, home of the Shadowborn clan.

Paunchcrammer led the adventurers out of the keep and through the streets of Olwynn. They arrived at the clock tower..

They headed inside. There was blood on the floor. Nearby stairs led up to a balcony which overlooked the main floor where the heroes were.

Paunchcrammer smiled. He said, laughing, "You guys are really stupid. That was so easy!"

Two familiar individuals appeared on the balcony - Belgos and Silussa!

Belgos and Silussa were originally agents of the drow, but befriended the heroes instead. But when they came to Olwynn, they ended up staying with the Shadowborns. Varis had suggested that the Shadowborns torture Belgos and Silussa to see if there was any more information.

The Shadowborns did so while Varis was away, but Belgos and Silussa's innate domination powers allowed them to turn the tables on their torturers. Now, all of the Shadowborns were vampiric thralls of Belgos! Even Paunchcrammer had become vampiric!

Belgos looked down on the adventurers and said, "Silussa, your plan was so clever!"

She smiled and said, "No, you're the clever one!"

Belgos pointed an accusatory finger at Varis. "You! We befriended you! And then you had your Shadowborn friends try to torture us! Isn't that right? Well, now we run the Shadowborns and we contacted the drow. We are going to destroy your city and we are going to make you our thralls - if you're lucky! Isn't that right, my darling?"

Silussa nodded and smiled.

Blue Monk called out, "I thought you liked us!".

Belgos said, "I did, until the boy showed us his true nature."

Silussa said to Varis, "...And to think, I was going to make out with you!".

Scarlet blurted out, "And to think I was going to watch... I mean, I was back at the camp the whole time."

Belgos had his bats and rats summon all of the Lolthbound goblins, giant spiders, and Web Golems wandering the forests and had them join up, ready to attack Olwynn. And he'd even been the one who contacted the drow in Rilauven.

Vampire thralls burst from the adjacent rooms and attacked! The Blue Monk fought back, and punched his way into the kitchen area. Ardra killed one vampire with her blade, and another with her unseen hand.

Belgos took control of Hartaniel's mind.

The vampire laughed and said, Now you're all going to suffer! You've doomed your whole city. Isn't that right, my darling?"

Silussa the succubus agreed. It's true, darling. They are doomed one hundred percent!"

Varis called up to Belgos and Silussa. "You know what happened to the last people who attacked my family? Have you met Teddy? I decapitated one and burned the other alive, and sucked them both into this skull!"

Belgos looked at Varis in alarm. Then, he commanded Hartaniel to charge The Blue Monk. The monk dodged the attack, and Hartaniel shook off the vampire's control.

Varis used the power of the card he'd found on the red mantis, scorching the vampires (as well as some allies), and scattering them in random directions.

Ryltar plunged his scythe into a vampire (with a critical). Ardra killed another vampire, and injured one nearby as well. Scarlet finished off another of Belgos' minions with her broken blade.

Belgos remained at the top of the stairs, with Silussa behind him, and cast a spell down on the heroes that exploded and injured them.

The Blue Monk was fighting two vampires at once. They clawed him again and again, bloodying him. Ardra knocked one of them away from him.

Belgos watched as the heroes cut down the Shadowborn vampire thralls. He said to Silussa, "Look at how traitorous they are. They cut down Varis' Shadowborn clan with no compunctions at all." Belgos called down to them, "Truly the drow are more worthy allies than you!".

Hartaniel teleported up to the second floor balcony where Belgos and Silussa were. Hartaniel said, "We wanted to be your friends".

Varis shouted from below, "Speak for yourself!".

Hartaniel stabbed Silussa (with a critical). She shrieked in pain. Hartaniel sent her hurtling over the side of the balcony. She crashed to the ground on the first floor near the heroes.

Varis eyes went wide. He drained power from Scarlet and blasted Silussa with a spell, devastating her (with a critical!). Then, Ryltar brought his scythe down on her. Blood sprayed from the wound. She was dead. Ryltar looked up and gave Belgos a cold stare.

Belgos, atop the stairs, yelled "NOOOOOO!".

The Blue Monk and Ardra continued to battle the vampires in the kitchen.

Hartaniel staggered Belgos with a shout of terror. Belgos swore revenge and transformed into a mist bat. But before he could make his escape, Scarlet raced up the stairs and grabbed hold of him.

Varis made his way near to Belgos and said, "You must be so sad. Your girlfriend is dead, right in front of your eyes! Maybe you should kill yourself so you can be with her." Varis' cast a spell that forced Belgos to injure himself. Scarlet stabbed her broken blade into him for good measure.

Belgos gasped and said, "If Silussa's gone, then I don't want to be here. With my last breath, I do not curse you. I tell Silussa that I love her!"

Silussa, below suddenly gasped. She called out "Nooo!". And then they both died.

Scarlet said, "They were annoying in life, and they're annoying in death."

With Belgos dead, the Shadowborn were no longer vampiric thralls. Those still alive shook their heads and took control of their senses.

The adventurers now knew who had been contacting the drow, but unfortunately, the drow were still on the way....

The Blue Monk - Half-Orc Monk Almoner
Hartaniel - Elf Barbarian Groom of the Stool
Lucky - Human Warlord Constable
Ryltar - Drow Avenger Constable
Scarlet - Human Fighter Constable
Varis - Half-Elf Warlock Hostarius

and

Hirbe, Hero of the Chaos Scar
Zahar, Raven Knight of the Raven Queen

Some souls of the dead are held in a place in the Shadowfell known as the Hall of Final Fate. The souls were kept there for reasons known only to the Raven Queen, the goddess of death. The spirits of the dead were guarded by a creature that some called the spawn of the Raven Queen and Nerull - Vorkhesis, Master of Fate.

The Raven Queen herself was at the Hall of Fate, studying the soul of a leukodaemon that our heroes had killed in Rilauven. The Goddess of Death sent a raven to fetch her most favored of the Raven Knights - Zahar (Zahar was one of the heroes who saved the Raven Queen's life in the Revenge of the Giants/Orcus campaign... I swear I'll finish those summaries some day!).

Zahar arrived shortly, with the legendary Shadowfell blade in its' sheath. He'd used the blade to kill Falazure, the fallen god of shadow dragons.

The Raven Queen explained to Zahar that she'd been studying the leukodameon's essence, as it had been tainted by a primordial. She explained that the city of Olwynn was in danger. Zahar had come from Olwynn and was friends with King Thennrynia. She asked him if he thought the city should be aided in some way.

Vorkhesis listened to the conversation, and hecould hear admiration in his mother's voice. This enraged him. Vorkhesis was jealous of the attention his mother gave to Zahar.

Vorkhesis said, "Why are you asking him?"

Zahar said, "Because I do things. I don't just sit around, Vorkhesis."

Vorkhesis said, "You always ask his opinion, mother. His opinion doesn't matter. He is one of your lackeys."

Zahar turned away from the Master of Fate. Vorkhesis raised his black spear to stab Zahar.

Zahar turned invisible and shoved him back.

Vorkhesis cackled. "I can only assume that you've turned invisible. You know that I have no eyes, fool!". Vorkhesis plunged his spear into Zahar. Zahar did not flinch.

The Raven Queen stood between them. She told her son to stand down.

Zahar said to him, "Yes, watch your temper, chum."

The Raven Queen turned to the shadar kai and said, "Zahar, my finest Raven Knight, will you go to Olwynn?"

"Of course I will, my queen."

"Bring your Raven Knights if you so desire."

Back on the world of Nyrod, the City of Olwynn braced itself for another attack. The heroes had warned the king that spelljammers bearing drow were heading toward the city. A horde of monsters - web golems, lolthbound goblins and spiders - were massing outside the city walls. With the city's army dealing with the drow-occupied city of Dunnwynn, the King had to gather up any able-bodied men and women that he could.

Once the adventurers had informed the King of the invasion details they'd gleaned from Belgos and Silussa, they spotted Lady Tarentia talking with the eladrin they'd rescued from the drow city, Solufine. She seemed very fond of him.

He saw the heroes looking, and approached them. He had written a draft of his ballad and offered to share it with them. The ballad was about how the heroes freed him and fought the black dragon in the Dragon's Tooth Inn in the drow city of Rilauven. It went like this:

"I hung in darkness as a slave
Waiting my cruel Lasher
Queen Morwel sent a gift to me
Hartaniel Draedsmasher

My ropes were cut and I was freed
He drank from a flagon
Ardra guarded my weakened form
As she fought a dragon

The dragon's acid killed a drow
I hid in the dank bar
Thieving goblins met the scythe of
The avenger Ryltar

My wounds were grave I needed aid
My saviors were plucky
My cuts were healed by a grim one
Suicidal Lucky

Ardra slashed and drank wine as
A half-orc monk of blue
punched the foul dragon very hard
He'd also punched me too

Acid blood sprayed I ran and hid
The Monk threw a fierce jab
Scarlet pulled the dragon away
She had the dragon grabbed

To my surprise I saw a lad
His chest was surely hairless
His soul was dark His spells were strong
Little Evil Varis!

My heroes surrounded the beast
Who else would even dare?
Hartaniel murdered the dragon
And then he cut a chair

As they took a five minute rest
To take me they agreed
Ardra's armor became a skirt
'Twas scandalous indeed

I thanked my newfound saviors
Even the fiendish youth
Acid had melted treasure so
They took the dragon's tooth"

The adventurers liked it. A bit of a crowd had gathered and applauded.

Vaona, the drow from Echo Warrens, spoke to Ryltar. "Hey there Ryltar."

The drow avenger said, "Hi. Can I help you?"

"Vecna told me about your secrets."

"My what?"

"Julhara."

"Uh huh...". Julhara was Ryltar's matron back in the drow city he came from, on the world of Dracos. Ryltar wasn't sure how Vecna knew anything about this..

Vaona continued, "It's a little sad, that's all."

Julhara had been taken away after a traitorous handmaiden had turned her in for worshiping a deity other than Lolth. "Maybe we can find her some day. Maybe Vecna can help you."

"How about you not talk about her?", asked Ryltar angrily. Ryltar glared at Hartaniel, who held the Vecna lantern.

Hartaniel, the eladrin, said to him, "Hey, I trance just like you."

The heroes rested, to heal their wounds from the battle with Belgos and Silussa. The next morning, they awoke to calls of alarm. The drow ships were in the sky, bearing down on the city!

The few able spelljammers in Olwynn's harbor took to the sky, ready to attempt to repel the invaders. The heroes geared up and climbed on the back of their giant Vecna-bird, Dark Secret. They soared up into the sky and headed straight for one of the drow galleons. The drow spotted the massive bird and launched a glowing catapult boulder at it. Dark Secret maneuvered and avoided the boulder, which plummeted to the city far below.

Varis pulled out the card he'd obtained from the red mantis mist mage. A fiery image appeared on Dark Secret's back. From it, he could cast the card's fire spell.

Dark Secret flew up to the deck, close enough so that the heroes could jump on to the enemy ship. On board, they saw drow males with skeletal left hands. The skeleton hands were burning with darkfire. The drow were accompanied by a half-dozen skeletons whose entire bodies were shrouded in darkfire!

The drow and skeletons held up their hands and launched dark, purple, fist-sized fireballs at the heroes! Ardra, Hartaniel and Scarlet took the brunt of the attack, and were knocked back.

Ryltar darkened. These drow were from his world all right. He'd barely escaped his home city after being forced to deal with an evil drow necromancer called Altonolil. He'd had to to serve Altonolil after his matron had been betrayed by a handmaiden, Xunae. Ryltar escaped when none other than Zahar came to kill Altonolil for The Raven Queen.

Ryltar jumped onto the ship and slashed his scythe through a skeleton. It exploded, and shrouded Ryltar in darkfire.
The Blue Monk solemnly applied blue powder to his hands, jumped on board and destroyed three enemies in a flash of motion. Hartaniel went with him, and dropped two as well.

Varis fired off an eldritch bolt from Dark Secret's back, dropping a drow. His skull familiar held the spirits of a drow boy and his mother, Yasnabrinna. Yasnabrinna usually just screamed "I'm burning!". But as Varis engaged the drow, Yasnabrinna suddenly began to cackle and tell Varis that the drow would destroy him, and that his only chance was to surrender.

Ardra raced down one of Dark Secret's wings, jumped onto the ship and destroyed a skeleton. Scarlet hopped on board, killed a skeleton, and then turned the drow catapult toward another nearby drow ship...

There were shouts from a deck below. More drow emerged! Four priestess holding fang whips came through hatches and stairways to engage the adventurers. Two of them were familiar to Ryltar. One was the traitorous Xunae... and the other, his matron, Julhara! She wore veils, but he was sure it was her. She spotted him, and was shocked. "Zhah ol dos, Ryltar?", she called out. She'd asked in drow if it was really him.

Ryltar indicated that it was.Xunae cackled and hissed, "Il z'klaen xun vel'bol usstan telanth." She'd used magic to make Julhara her willing slave!

The sight of Ryltar, however, gave Julhara pause. She fought to break free of Xunae's magical control...

The other priestesses launched off skull ray spells. One beam struck the Blue Monk and staggered him. Then the priestesses spoke foul necromantic words, and raised four of the drow male corpses up as more dark fire skeletons.

Ryltar waded through enemies, raised his scythe, and cut a bloody swath into Xunae's torso. She shrieked, fell back, and demanded that Julhara help her. Julhara held her head, focused, and shattered Xunae's spell! She raced to the catapult that Scarlet had aimed, and launched it! The boulder soared through the air and struck the nearby drow ship. The ship began to turn...

Xunae looked to create some space between herself and Ryltar. But she walked right into the Blue Monk's path. The Monk was going from foe-to-foe, striking each while drinking a healing potion. He bore down on Xunae, who was bloodied badly. He pummeled her. She fell to the deck, dead.

Ardra stabbed a priestess and knocked her into the ship's railing. the priestess teetered but didn't fall overboard.

Scarlet was near the catapult. She plunged her broken blade through the heart of a drow, and then slashed a skeleton, causing it to explode.

From a nearby hatch came the captain of the ship, a drow priestess called Yathrin Natharra. She stood near Scarlet, held forward a metal rod and spoke a command word. From the rod sprung three yellow tentacles!

Scarlet turned to face her foe. The heroes had fought two priestesses with tentacle rods before, and both fights had been very harrowing. Those rods had been purple. Scarlet was not looking forward to seeing what the yellow ones did.

Natharra shrieked and struck Scarlet. The tentacles' slimy secretion dazed the fighter as the tentacles lashed and choked her. Scarlet fell to the ground, unconscious.

Ryltar and The Blue Monk engaged Natharra as Julhara fired spells off on the drow. Ardra stabbed a priestess, killing her. She absorbed the priestesses' soul into her helm of seven deaths. All seven gems were full, unleashing the helmet's full power. Lucky knelt down and healed Scarlet, reviving her.

Varis cast a spell, turning Natharra's tentacles against her. Yasnabrinna hissed, "Who do you think you are?! You little monster!"

Varis said, "I'm Varis and you're an evil bitch."

Natharra shrieked and fell to the ground, struggling against the dazing tentacles. Lucky cleared a path for Ardra, who launched off two magic missiles which struck Natharra in the chest and killed her.

With the drow defeated, Julhara led the adventurers below decks, where they found a priestess in the ship's helm. Ryltar cut off her head and Julharra sat in the helm. She steered the ship and powered it with her mastery of arcana. She headed toward the nearby drow ship.

The heroes' ship traded catapult fire with the enemy vessel. Further to the south above the city, other drow ships battled the few spelljammers able to defend Olwynn...

On board one of the enemy ships over there was the eladrin, Hirbe. Hirbe had been taken captive on a drow ship, along with the Tiger-Man and six green-skinned kara-kara tribesman. They had been able to stop the drow from building a web tower in the ruined asteroid city of Nedragaard, but were subsequently captured by the incoming Drow from Dracos.

Three dark fire skeletons were watching over them. Hirbe quietly cast a burning transformation spell, scorching his ropes and freeing himself. The skeletons lunged at him. Hirbe destroyed them with a cold blast spell.

Hirbe untied Tiger-man and the kara-kara.

Rellskar Grave, the Tiger-Man asked, "Why did it take yo so long to do that, friend?"

Hirbe said, "I wanted to give you a chance to escape first."

The Tiger-Man laughed. The small team fought their way through the ship. The drow were no match for Hirbe's spells and the Tiger-Man's fighting prowess.

They broke into the helm room. There were two priestesses with their leader, who held a yellow tentacle rod. Hirbe cast a lightning bolt spell that hit and killed all three of them in one shot.

Another drow priestess was sitting on the helm throne, piloting the ship. Hirbe ordered the kara-kara to take her up and to throw her overboard. Hirbe took the helm and had control of the ship.

Back on the other side of the city, the heroes shot down the enemy ship. It crashed down to the city, striking a section of the wall surrounding the city and crumbling it. The heroes' hearts sank as they saw the massed army of spiders, goblins and golems racing toward the hole! The adventurers climbed onto Dark Secret and flew down..

Down below, Zahar and his band of Raven Knights also raced to fend off the invaders. The Raven Knights made their way through the hole and attacked! Zahar had maybe 50 raven knights at his command. The enemy horde was at least 500 strong. There were more enemies, but the knights were far more powerful. The knights cut through them with ease...

However, a few monsters made it past the knights. A massive spider with 5 goblins on its' back skittered through the hole in the wall and closed in on a dwelling. Dark Secret landed. The heroes climbed off and made their way to the spider.

The goblins charged. One raced up and plunged its' war pick into Ardra's thigh, bloodying her.

Scarlet engaged the spider, dodging a flurry of attacks. The spider brought a leg down on her, knocking her to the ground.

One goblin ran through the house and came out the front door. It was planning on making its' way to the rear of the party. The Blue Monk ran over and battled it.

Hartaniel climbed onto the roof of the house and opened fire on the goblins with his repeating crossbow.

Varis killed a goblin with a spiteful glamor spell. Ardra activated her helmet's power, releasing all of the souls and infusing her blade with power. She landed an explosive strike on a goblin, causing its' blood to spray everywhere.

Ryltar killed another goblin as Scarlet plunged her blade into the spider's underbelly.

Hartaniel got off the roof and ran at the spider. It bit him with its' massive mandibles. He shook it off, and climbed onto the spider's back. He plunged his blade into it twice. Poison blood spewed everywhere. The spider collapsed, dead..

Suddenly, Ryltar's mud sorcerer ring glowed. It transformed into the tiny snake that had bit him and given him Bwimb's curse. The snake whispered something and burrowed into Ryltar's hand. He could feel it swimming through his body, charging him with energy.

The Blue Monk ran by a goblin. As he passed, the monk asked, "Do you feel the hurt awaken from within you? You shall see the Raven Queen, naturally." The Monk had rings on each hand that spelled out "BLUE" "MONK" - gifts from Scarlet. He hit the goblin so hard, he shattered its' face. Dark light shot out from the goblin as it fell over, dead.

The ground all around the heroes became muddy. Ardra killed the last two goblins as the others looked around, trying to figure out what was going on.

Five massive, glowing oozes grew up out of the mud, along with one mud grue. The grue had eight glowing runes on it. The runes were in the shape of the mud sorcerer symbol for earth and water existing harmoniously.

The mud grue said, "Greetings from Bwimb, the paraelemental princess of ooze!". The grue pointed at Lucky, and one of the eight runes on its' body faded out.

As "luck" would have it, the oozes had risen up all around Lucky. She clenched her adamantine fist as the mud grue pointed at her. Suddenly, from under her feet, a glowing glob off ooze rose up and engulfed her. It ate away her skin and muscle in an instant, killing her! The ooze paused for a moment. The shocked heroes could only see Lucky's skeleton and adamantine arm floating within. Then, the glob retreated into the muddy ground, taking Lucky's remains with it!

The mud grue said, "Her soul belongs to Bwimb now." Then he pointed at Hartaniel. "You shall be next!".

The stunned heroes couldn't believe it. Lucky had been killed in an instant. Vecna called out to Hartaniel, "You have no chance against them! You must run. You've angered Bwimb, you idiot!".

Hartaniel said, "If you were a real god you'd do something to help us right now."

"Now you're turning on me?! You fool!"

Ryltar called out to Hartaniel, "You didn't anger her. I did!"

Hartaniel scoured the ground, looking for any remains of Lucky's body to use so that she could be raised. But not a hair remained.

Scarlet grabbed an ooze and called out to the raven knights through the hole. Zahar heard, and came running.

Varis teleported into the nearby house. Ryltar turned invisible and ran toward the wall. The Blue Monk went into the house with Varis.

Zahar, shadowfell blade in hand, charged up to the mud grue and slashed it. As he ran past Ryltar, he said, "...my investment!".

The grue howled in shock and pain as blood poured from the wound. The heroes ran out to where the Raven Knights were as Zahar made quick work of Bwimb's monsters.

Lucky was dead, and Bwimb was determined to take all of their souls...

14. Temple of Urgathoa

2/6/12: Ryan was sick this week and couldn't make it. And it's almost time for the heroes to begin Madness at Gardmore Abbey.

The unicorn-people are like white-skinned humans from the neck down. Their heads are unicorn heads. They are considered the most pure and beautiful race in all of the feywild, and live in the magical valley of the unicorns, which is accessed by walking through a rainbow waterfall.

The first unicorn-person appeared in the revenge of the giants campaign, who was used as a gross comedy character. All the npcs thought she was super-hot and beautiful, and the players held back vomit at my descriptions of her horse-like beauty. Her name was Gelda. The heroes re-named the chaos ship they stole from Orcus as "Gelda's Fancy".

The second unicorn-person appeared earlier in this campaign as a "date" of Lady Tarentia. The heroes sort of got him killed by the King's cursed sword, Blackrazor.

Now that Lucky has died, Sam will be playing a unicorn-person. She lives by the unicorn code:

1. Unicorns never cheat.
2. Unicorns always lend a helping hand.
3. Unicorns don't talk to strangers.
4. Unicorns respect the Earth.
5. Unicorns are never late.
6. Unicorns aren't conceited.
7. Unicorns don't judge people.
8. Unicorns always give 100%.
9. Unicorns graze on peace and love.
10. Unicorns don't do drugs.

Chapter Fourteen: Temple of Urgathoa

Aurora Brightbolt - Unicorn-Person Ranger
Ardra - Eladrin Bladesinger Vovoidja
The Blue Monk - Half-Orc Monk Almoner
Ryltar - Drow Avenger Constable
Scarlet - Human Fighter Constable
Varis - Half-Elf Warlock Hostarius

and

Fayte Bonesunder, Ally of Graz'zt (from the Temple of Elemental Evil Campaign)
Zahar, Raven Knight of the Raven Queen

The city was under attack, and Bwimb had sent her oozy minions to slay the adventurers. An ooze had killed Lucky and dragged her into a muddy portal, delivering her soul to Bwimb, the para-elemental princess of ooze.

The shocked heroes had run through the hole in the city wall that they'd been defending to escape the oozes. But the source of the muddy portals seemed to be Ryltar, who carried Bwimb's curse with him. As the heroes headed through the wall near Zahar's raven knights, Ryltar collapsed. He was in a coma-like state, and his skin was becoming translucent and slimy.

The giant Vecna-bird, Dark Secret, swooped down. The adventurers climbed on the bird's back and flew over the city toward Moonstone Keep. The King was a very skilled ritual caster. If anyone could heal Ryltar, it would be him. But, to the heroes' chagrin, mud spread beneath Ryltar's body and onto Dark Secret's back and wings..

Scarlet opened up her bag of holding and slid Ryltar into it. Dark Secret tried to stay airborne, but the mud made it difficult to flap its' wings. Dark Secret crashed in the city below. Ardra teleported just before the bird hit the ground, and appeared safely nearby. Zahar stood on the back of the bird's head and laughed the whole way down.

The heroes dusted themselves and tried to patch up their injuries off as a Drow-captured ship lowered down to the street. On either side of the street was scaffolding, as the city was in the process of re-building from the last drow attack.

Drow invaders climbed down a rope ladder and fired from the deck of the ship.

One drow stood in the street as his allies fanned out. He had a skeletal hand that burned with dark fire. He aimed his hand at fleeing citizens, about to launch fire at them.
But before he could, an accomplished hero arrived. She had survived the temple of elemental evil, and rode a skeletal horse. She wore pieces of metal armor and had many tattoos. She was the mighty warrior Fayte Bonesunder!

All the drow invader could do was scream as Skullstrider, Fayte's horse, trampled him utterly.

A darkfire skeleton in the street launched off fireballs at any nearby citizens. Zahar ran toward it, jumped over it, and sliced it's head off, rendering it inert.

A drow cut into a tall section of scaffolding, hoping to tip it on The Blue Monk. The Monk flung blue dust in the drow's eyes and tried to dodge the collapse, but his leg was pinned in the collapse.

A drow on board the ship fired his crossbow at Varis. Varis used the power of his card from the deck of many things to launch a torrent of flame at the drow and the ship. The drow caught fire, shrieked, and fell over the side to his death. The ship caught fire and the blaze quickly spread.

A drow priestess wielding a fang whip (the end of which split into the heads of three snakes) closed in on Ardra, hoping to kill the bladesinger. Ardra used her fey step to avoid the priestess' attacks.

The priestess cast a spell at a ruined wall section, hoping to collapse it on Fayte Bonesunder and her undead steed. Fayte quickly pulled out her ten foot pole, which was invaluable during her excursions into the temple of elemental evil, and braced it against the wall. The wall tipped, but the pole held it up at an angle. The priestess yelled drow curses at Fayte.

The main priestess of the ship strode up to Scarlet, held up a metal rod, and spoke arcane words that caused three yellow tentacles to sprout out of it. Scarlet flipped up to a level of scaffolding and punched a pile of building materials at the priestess. Bricks and tools crashed down on her, giving her a number of bloody wounds.

Zahar unfurled his flying carpet and flew on it at the priestess with the tentacle rod. He plunged his shadowfell blade into her, killing the priestess.

The Blue Monk freed himself from the tipped scaffolding. He ran over to the drow who had collapsed it, picked him up and threw him at the priestess with the fang whip, bloodying both of them.

Drow were evacuating the ship, which was ablaze. As they climbed down rope ladders, Varis gleefully cast burning spray spells on them, killing four more drow.

Ardra kicked the priestess with the fang whip in the chest and swung her sword. The priestess dodged the blow. Fayte Bonesunder rode up to the priestess and used her trusty mancatcher to grab the drow by the neck. Fayte dragged the priestess and thrust her into the propped-up wall. The wall collapsed on the priestess, killing her.

Scarlet grabbed and killed the few remaining fleeing drow.

The burning ship fell to pieces as the heroes caught their breath. With no more drow to kill, the mysterious Fayte Bonesunder rode off into the city as suddenly as she had arrived. Dark Secret was able to shake off the hardening mud.

They made their way to Moonstone Keep only to find that the King was battling the drow on their ships. Ryltar noticed that the King was using a drow sword to fight rather than Blackrazor.

They searched the keep for Lady Tarentia. She hated the heroes for ruining her standing in the Court of Stars, but she had little choice but to help them. They found her shmoozing with Solufine the bard, and a new unicorn-person named Aurora Brightbolt. The unicorn-people had sway in the Court of Stars, and Lady Tarentia was hoping to befriend Aurora.

Solufine said, "Yes, Lady Tarentia, I thought you'd like to meet my friend Aurora Brightbolt."

Lady Tarentia said, "You're so beautiful! Please come in and have a drink!".

Then the adventurers burst into the room.

Lady Tarentia scowled and said to them, "What do you want?".

Zahar said, "We have a slippery drow that needs to not be that way."

Lady Tarentia said, "The city is under attack right now. I really don't have time for this."

Scarlet tipped hr bag of holding. Ryltar's slimy body plopped out and onto the floor. The floor began to burble and turned to mud. Now it was her problem too. Ardra explained that oozes loyal to Bwimb would sprout up from the mud and attack.

The Blue Monk said to Lady Tarentia, "We lost a friend to the ooze. Don't speak to us of loss!".

"How dare you bring monsters to Moonstone Keep. I could get you into a lot of trouble over this!".

Scarlet said, "Well you should start by curing him so the monsters don't kill you."

Aurora said to Lady Tarentia, "Unicorns don't judge. Some say that King Thennrynnia, or even me, is a monster! But this is not the case. Unicorns always lend a helping hand. It's part of the unicorn code." Lady Tarentia needed to befriend Aurora to try to get back in good standing with the Court of Stars. Ardra resisted the urge to comb Aurora's long, flowing white hair.

Lady Tarentia told the heroes that they were lucky. She chanted, and her hand glowed. She reached into Ryltar's slimy body, pulled out the tiny snake, and crushed it in her fist.

Scarlet said, "Thanks Lady Tarentia. You're not all bad."

Aurora nodded and said, "There's goodness in all of us!".

Ryltar quickly recovered and seemed to be fine. Ryltar was at last free of Bwimb's curse. Zahar left the keep and rejoined his raven knights, who were slaughtering the monster army outside the city walls.

The heroes headed to the throne room. Solufine went with them and introduced them to Aurora.

Ardra said, "So fuzzy..."

Orem, Ardra's grandfather, arrived with some guards. Scarlet turned her armor into a classic female fighter outfit - A metal bikini, more or less - for his benefit. He had a "present" for them. It was Tark Graven, the man who'd bought the cylinders and given them to the Cult of Urgathoa. He was secretly one of the plaguebringers!

Orem proudly added, "...And I didn't use any spells. He should be able to tell you where the cult's lair is. And then you can go get rid of them!"

The heroes took Tark to a quiet room. He was a tall, thin human with dark circles under his eyes. The Blue Monk punched him in the stomach. He groaned and fell to the ground.

Tark asked, "So are you taking me to the multi-dimensional prison? Or the King's Jail?"

Scarlet said, "Worse. You're with us."

"I'll never talk!".

Varis, the evil twelve year old boy, cackled gleefully.

The Blue Monk asked, "Are you going to tell us where the cult's lair is?"

"Never!", Tark cried. The Monk slapped him across the face.

Varis prepared to go to work on Tark. Aurora looked at him and the heroes and said, "Please. I don't want to see any unnecessary violence."

Varis scowled and asked, "Why not?".

Tark was overcome by Aurora's equine beauty. He told the others, "Urgathoa will get revenge on you. The plaguebringers will strap you down to a able and fill you full of diseases."

Varis said, "Speaking of diseases...". He pulled out a vial of blood veil. Tark gasped. The heroes donned plaguebringer masks, which gave them immunity to the disease.

Tark said, "The horse lady said you weren't going to do anything to me."

Scarlet said, "Well, you do a thing for us and we don't brutally murder you."

Tark said, "Dying by blood veil is a gift from Urgathoa. I'll just come back as a leukodaemon and then I'll come kill you."

Ardra glared at him and said, "We have other ways...". He was intimidated.

Tark explained that the cult lived in an undergound temple in Thunderspire Labyrinth, the maze-like caves underneath the city of Olwynn. The entrance was protected by a disease cloud. The plaguebringer masks could protect them from the cloud.

The heroes asked for specific directions to the temple. He refused to say.

Aurora looked at Tark and said, "Please. I don't want to see them harm you!"

Overcome by her loveliness, Tark gave them exact directions.

They dropped Tark off in the King's Jail. He had a cell near Derrinnil, the drow prisoner who the King was fond of.

The Raven Knights had defeated the monsters, and Hirbe's ship was able to defeat the invading drow ships. Olwynn was safe. The heroes were able to rest. They slept for the night.

The next morning, they ate breakfast with the King. Ryltar noticed that the King was looking frail. Later, when the King was gone, Ryltar pointed this out to his allies. The King was purposely not using his cursed sword, even though he would turn into a wight forever if he didn't take a soul with it once a week. Scarlet surmised that the King might have felt guilty about using it, especially with Ryltar judging him about it. Ryltar pointed out he'd only made one comment. The heroes made a note to themselves to get the King to kill somebody soon...

The Cult of Urgathoa's lair was underneath the city, in the maze-like Thunderspire Labyrinth! The entrance was guarded by a disease cloud. The heroes all had plaguebringer masks, which would protect them from the cloud.

Following Tark's directions, they soon found the entrance amid the disease cloud. It was a runed magical lift. They activated, and descended into the enemy lair, hoping to find and kill the cult's leader, Lady Andaisin.

The entry room was adorned with murals of skeletons holding scythes. There was a set of double doors that Ryltar examined and determined were trapped. They avoided the trapped doors and examined the other rooms.

They came upon a small room where four plaguebearers lurked. The heroes made quick work of them.

They headed into a room where the walls and floor were lined with glass. Behind the glass were zombies! The glass was strong, and the zombies seemed unable to free themselves. Ardra sensed that the glass could be melted through magic tied to Urgathoa.

They opened a southern door, and came upon a necromancer and two daughters of Urgathoa experimenting on a half-dozen unfortunate citizens strapped to beds. One was dead, three more had grey skin and in a half-zombie state, and two others were suffering from fever dreams.

The Blue Monk rushed in and decked one of the daughters, as the other fired off a magic bolt at Ardra. Ardra blocked it with a shield spell. The daughter clawed the Monk with her giant, diseased hand, and uttered a prayer to Urgathoa, which melted the glass and freed the 12 zombies from the walls!

The zombies attacked and bloodied Aurora. Aurora's blink dog snarled and tore apart a zombie. Aurora took advantage of her dog's magical aura and teleported away from the horde of zombies that surrounded her.

A zombie grabbed the dog and smashed it on the ground. The dog disappeared in a flash. It had returned to the Feywild! The dog raced through the forest, sniffing for the inter-dimensional scent of her master. She picked it up quickly, and in another flash was back at Aurora's side.

Varis activated the power of his card from the deck of many things and sent forth a massive wave of flame that destroyed four zombies. Then he followed up with a burning spray spell, destroying two more.

Ryltar maneuvered his way around a daughter and hacked into her with his scythe, bloodying her. The other daughter had grabbed Ardra, ready to swipe into her. But the blink dog was near, and Ardra used its' power to teleport herself back into the zombie room.

Near Ardra, Scarlet was finishing off the last of the zombies.

Rolth the necromancer had been firing off spells at the Monk and Ryltar. Now, he closed in on Ryltar with a daughter and stabbed his curved dagger into the drow avenger's back, dropping him.

Ardra ran in, sliced a daughter of urgathoa and then sent Rolth flying with an unseen hand spell. This cleared the way for the Blue Monk, who knelt down next to Ryltar and poured a potion of healing into his mouth, reviving him. Rolth launched off a death bolt at the Monk. The Monk was hit and slumped over, dying...

Ryltar staggered to his feet and called forth a cloud of ravens to protect himself as he bandaged his wounds. Aurora fired off arrows at Rolth. She ran, her white hair flowing dramatically, and hopped onto a bed. She shot an arrow into a daughter of Urgathoa's chest, killing her.

Varis hit Rolth with a dark worm's feast spell.

Aurora said to Varis, "Good work, little friend! I have a feeling that we'll make a great team!"

Varis called out sarcastically, "Sure we will...". Varis deliberately moved farther away from her.

Ardra asked him, "Don't you want to pet the pony?".

Rolth lunged at the boy, stabbing him. Varis' darkspiral aura went off, injuring Rolth far more for his transgression.

Scarlet said to Varis, "You are terrifying sometimes."

Ryltar called out, "Sometimes? Varis, are you sure you worship the Raven Queen?".

Varis said, "Eh. She's a source of power. I find it very cute that you devote your life to her, though."

Scarlet called out to Ryltar, "A twelve year old just called you cute..."

The adventurers finished off the villains and rested for a few minutes. They explored an adjacent room, and found it to be a prison with five prisoners yet to be experimented on. The heroes freed them, as well as the two sick men having fever dreams. The prisoners agreed to wait for the heroes to finish their assault to try to escape.

The heroes traveled deeper into the cult's lair and came upon a room with three vats of foul liquid. A catwalk was above the vats, where two leukodaemons lurked! A plaguebringer was also among them. Scarlet immediately dashed up onto the catwalk and came at the leukodaemons.

The plaguebringer opened a door and freed two zombies from the small room. The pair of zombies immediately lumbered forth and came at the heroes, blocking the doorway and leaving Scarlet all alone on the catwalk with the leukodaemons.

The daemons fired disease-ridden arrows into Scarlet's thigh. Scarlet grabbed a leukodaemon.

Ardra sent one zombie flying with an unseen hand, and then knocked the other one back with a blow from her blade.

The zombies got up and again came at the heroes, blocking the doorway. The Blue Monk punched one, his fist going through its' head, destroying it (a critical hit, which on these zombies, reduces them to 0 hit points). Varis blasted the other with a spell, and Ryltar beheaded it with his scythe.

Ardra raced up the catwalk, where the plaguebearer was creeping up on Scarlet as she fought the two leukodaemons. Ardra dumped the guy over the side. He fell into the vat and was killed by the hideous concoction inside.

Scarlet smacked a leukodaemon into a wall and then threw it into a vat as well. Aurora took aim and put an arrow through the last leukodaemon's chest. They dumped its' body in a vat for good measure.

They could sense they were close to Lady Andaisin. While they had seen her on two separate occasions, they had no idea how powerful she was. But if they could not defeat her, then the city of Olwynn was likely doomed....

Chapter Fifteen: Lady Andaisin

Aurora Brightbolt - Unicorn-Person Ranger
Ardra - Eladrin Bladesinger Vovoidja
The Blue Monk - Half-Orc Monk Almoner
Hartaniel - Elf Barbarian Groom of the Stool
Ryltar - Drow Avenger Constable
Scarlet - Human Fighter Constable
Varis - Half-Elf Warlock Hostarius

The ranger Aurora Brightbolt had joined our heroes in assaulting the Cult of Urgathoa in their lair underneath the city of Olwynn. The adventurers had survived a pair of battles with the cult and searched about for Lady Andaisin.

They found an alchemical laboratory that held a few useful potions. They also found what may have been Lady Andaisin's secret bedroom. Inside they found a alchemy books and a strange crystal ball which seemed to be a kind of map depicting crystal spheres floating in the phlogiston.

They entered a western chamber, and found a lone plaguebringer cleaning four 8-foot-tall glass tubes. Each was filled with liquid and contained a half-formed leukodaemon.

Scarlet immediately approached and grabbed the plaguebringer, who did not resist.

The plaguebringer said, "You fools! Unhand me. I am merely cleaning the glass."

Scarlet said, "Uhhh... no." Then she nodded toward one of the half-formed leukodaemons and asked, "How do we make these die?".

The plaguebringer scoffed. "You can't kill them!".

"Why not? We killed a bunch of them before."

"Urgathoa has imbued them with great power!".

Hartaniel grabbed him by the back of the neck and brought him to the previous room with the vats. Hartaniel pressed his face close to the liquid of one, so that the plaguebringer could get a look at one of the leukodaemons that the heroes had tossed in there moments before.

The plaguebringer screamed. "All right! I get it! I'll just go.... I'll just be on my way now..."

Scarlet said, "No, I don't think so."

Ardra asked the plaguebringer, "Why don't you tell us about the next room, and the temple itself?"

The plaguebringer talked about the room past the leukodemons in glass. "That is the great chamber of Lady Andaisin."

Ardra asked, "What's so great about it?"

"It is where Urgathoa sends her divine messages."

The heroes nodded, absorbing the information. The Blue Monk said, "Thanks."

The plaguebringer said, "Sure."

Ryltar noted, "You seem really compliant."

The plaguebringer shrugged. "I just know you're doomed, that's all."

They asked about the glass tubes with leukodaemons growing in them. The plaguebringer explained that they were gifts from Urgathoa.

They tied the plaguebringer to one of the tubes and continued on.

Through a set of stone double doors was a hallway which led to the main area of the temple. It was a circular room lined with small pools of various liquids like blood, milk and bile. In the middle of the room was a giant gold statue of Urgathoa surrounded by a pool of water. Spectral images swirled in the pool.

Lady Andaisin was here, waiting, along with five leukodaemons. She gripped her magic scythe tightly and addressed the intruders:

"And so you have found your way to me, hopeful heroes. Know that you stand before the architect of your city’s death. You call this sending blood veil, yet I know it as the gentle kiss of the Pallid Princess. Your reward shall be great — choose of the seven scourges to become one with the primordial. Those who drink, I shall only cripple, leaving you alive to enjoy her as she quickens inside your flesh. Those who abstain are fools, not fit to house the divine gift. You may prostrate yourselves at my feet and I shall make your end all the more swift for it. Swifter, in any event, than this delightful end your lovely queen has enjoined me to create!”

Ardra called out, "Why are you offering us this choice?"

Lady Andaisin said coldly, "Urgathoa would appreciate it."

Scarlet whispered, "I think she's scared of us."

Hartaniel asked Andaisin, "What happens if we say no?"

"Then you will suffer before you die."

Ryltar had a counter-offer. "How about we kill you and finish off your cult once and for all?"

Scarlet drank a potion of invisibility, made her way past the leukodaemons and closed in on Lady Andaisin. The leukodaemons fired off plague-cloud arrows at the other adventurers.

Ryltar rushed the closest one and cut a bloody wound into one with his scythe. He swung again, and cut off its' head.

Hartaniel teleported near the avenger and slashed into another daemon. The Monk staggered it with a thunderous punch and drank a potion of his own.

Scarlet had neared Andaisin, but the villain had a leukodaemon on either side of her. Scarlet could not get to Andaisin without stepping in the fountain. She did not want to step in the fountain, as she sensed it was trapped.

Scarlet plunged her broken blade into one of her leukodaemon guards and threw it into a nearby wall, causing herself to become visible.

The daemon slashed into her with its' claws while the other fired arrows at her. Lady Andaisin calmly coordinated their attack, holding her scythe as if it were a simple staff. The blade on the end gleamed - it was exceptionally sharp.

A small fly made of force crawled out of a daemon's empty eye socket and hurled itself into Scarlet. It knocked her back toward the pool around the statue. Scarlet braced her heel against the lip of the pool, stopping herself from falling in.

Back on the other side of the room, a leukodaemon breathed a cloud of flies on the heroes. Ryltar uttered a prayer to the Raven Queen and phased through a leukodaemon. He became tangible once more and sliced into a daemon.

Aurora fired off volleys of arrows, killing one of the two daemons guarding Andaisin. Ardra teleported to the center of the room an killed another. The bladesinger paused as the daemon's soul was sucked into one of the gems of her helm of seven deaths.

The Blue Monk delivered a series of blows, killing a leukodaemon. This cleared a path to Lady Andaisin and her two daemon guardians.

Hartaniel charged past them and stabbed Lady Andaisin in the shoulder. Black blood leaked from the wound. Her cold eyes went wide, and she gripped her scythe tightly.

Ardra maneuvered close and slashed the throat of the last leukodaemon, killing it. The heroes surrounded Andaisin, who began to slice her scythe at them in deadly arcs.

She spoke the name of Urgathoa and teleported out of their midst. The Blue Monk chased her down, but she sliced a long wound across his chest. Blood streamed down. She turned and swung her scythe at Aurora. Aurora dodged and jumped back. Then she lunged forward and plunged her unicorn horn into Andaisin's chest. Multi-colored rainbow light spilled from the wound as Andaisin gasped. She fell to the ground, dead.

The heroes had won! Or had they? Before they could even patch up their wounds, the eyes of the statue of Urgathoa began to glow.

Lady Andaisin's body crackled with unholy power and was lifted into the air. Her sundered flesh exploded with boils and pustules, while torrents of Urgathoa’s foul humors flooded forth and congealed into a sickening new body for the unliving saint.

Andaisin was covered in hard grey skin, and two chitinous horns sprouted from her head. Her scythe had become attached to her arm, and her legs were replaced by a long snake-like tail. Her black hair whipped in the air as she hovered 20 feet up and glared down at the heroes.

Andaisin was instantly reborn as a Daughter of Urgathoa, bent on revenge!

Andaisin fired green energy beams from her eyes, striking Varis and Aurora. Both of their skin became grey-green and smoke spewed from their mouths. They fell to the ground, dying!

The heroes spread out and fired crossbow bolts and arrows at her, trying to figure out a way to lure her down to melee range. The Blue Monk blew his guardian whistle, which teleported Aurora close to him. He knelt down and poured a potion in her throat, reviving the ivory-skinned beauty.

Andaisin fired eye beams at Ryltar and Scarlet, sickening and staggering them.

Varis staggered to his feet, stood on the burning image of the card of the deck of many things, and healed himself.

Hartaniel attached a rope to one of his crossbow bolts. Then he took aim at Andaisin and fired. The bolt suck deep into her torso. He tied the end of the rope around his waist and called out to The Blue Monk. The Blue Monk ran over and together they pulled on the rope. They were able to reel Andaisin down almost all the way to the floor!

Andaisin raised her scythe-arm, her eyes dark. Hartaniel tried to jump out of the arc of the blade, but he was hit! Her blade cut clean through his ankle and severed his foot! Hartaniel shouted in pain and fell to the ground, quickly trying to wrap up the stump as his allies closed in to get her attention. He tried to pull on the rope and swing Andaisin into a wall, but was unable to move her.

Ardra stabbed her as The Blue Monk grabbed the rope that was still attached to her. He swung it, and her, in a 180 degree arc, sending her crashing into a stone wall.

Hartaniel hung his head in shame, seeing that the Blue Monk did what the elf could not. Hartaniel vowed to himself to somehow make up for this failure.

Andaisin swung her deadly scythe at The Blue Monk, but the monk ducked it.

Ryltar slashed her. She turned to him and breathed a swarm of flies at him! The flies left tiny little cuts all over his body.

Scarlet was staggered by the flies as well. The battles had taken their toll on her. Scarlet could almost feel death's clammy grip on her shoulder (She was down to one hit point and had no surges left!). The flies swirling around her, feeling like little blades cutting her again and again. Scarlet collapsed, dying.

Hartaniel tossed one of the potent healing potions he'd found in the alchemical lab. Blue Monk caught it and administered it to Scarlet (this was a potion of cure critical, which doesn't require you to spend a surge if you are bloodied). Scarlet came to, and the flies thankfully dissipated.

Andaisin remained low, hovering just a few feet off the ground. She seemed determined to cut each and every one of their heads off. She faced Ryltar and swung. Ryltar jumped to the side, but was caught in the sweeping arc. Blood sprayed as she cut off his foot, as she had done to Hartaniel moments earlier!

He fell to the ground, gritted his teeth and began swiftly tying off the stump. The blood leaked out in dramatic and hideous fashion. The drow fell unconscious.

Andaisin was close to death. One well-placed shot would finish her. Hartaniel felt that killing her would redeem his perceived failure from earlier in the fight. He swung his blade down at her - and she blocked it with her scythe. Hartaniel fumed as her struggled to get back into position.

Ardra used one of the powers of her helm to search for weak points on Andaisin's body (actually, she was using the power to check how many hit points she had left).

Ardra called out to the Monk, who focused on the weak points, as well as her wounds. Then he stepped forward, and struck her in each point with his Five Strikes of Azure Elimination, as taught to him by Elder Teal.

Hartaniel was shocked and wounded that again, The Blue Monk had done what he could not...

Andaisin's body seized up, and exploded in a burst of gas and flies! The heroes fell back, hurt, but alive. The gas and flies dissipated. Andaisin's scythe laid on the ground, along with the gear she wore in life.

At last the cult was defeated! But the war against the drow was not over. Battle still raged in the city of Dunnwynn. And what of the red mantis assassins and the card from the deck of many things? There was still work to be done...

16. Madness at Gardmore Abbey

2/20/12: King Thennrynnia is actually a former character from my original Nyrod campaign from when I was a kid. My friend Stan created him. At the time, Drizz't was new and everybody wanted to play a drow who wielded two swords., so Stan now refers to Thennrynnia as a "Drizz't clone". Thennrynnia was one of the characters who went through the classic White Plume Mountain, and he ended up with Blackrazor.

I am also back to co-ordinating the D&D events in the store again, so these games will be DCI sanctioned events from here on out. The only drawback is that my table isn't supposed to have more than six players.

Also a correction: Hartaniel is an eladrin, not an elf. Sorry about that.

We are now beginning the boxed set adventure "Madness at Gardmore Abbey". Obviously, there will be huge spoilers...

Our heroes, allies of the brooding King Thennrynia, had killed the leader of the Cult of Urgathoa. The battle was harrowing, but they emerged victorious. Lady Andaisin's grey hide shedded off like a snakeskin, revealing her original, darkly beautiful form beneath. Ryltar claimed her huge, sharp scythe as his own.

The adventurers left the main chamber and headed back into the room which held the four glass tubes that held growing leukodemons inside of them. The plaguebringer was still tied to one of the tubes. He looked at the heroes, shocked, and said, "I can't believe you're still alive."

"I can't believe you haven't been crushed by the weight of your own pathetic existence", Scarlet said.

The heroes decided to bring him to King Thenrynnia, so that the King could kill him with his cursed sword, Blackrazor.

They left the Cult's lair (which Varis quietly decided would become his new home), bringing the plaguebringer and the prisoners they'd freed earlier with them. Hartaniel and Ryltar hobbled the whole way home, as each of them had lost a foot in the battle with Lady Andaisin.

In the throne room of Moonstone Keep, the King asked the heroes to bring the plaguebringer to the jail in Moonstone Keep for the time being.

Then the King told them that he would be traveling in the astral sea for a few days. He said he'd keep in magical contact with Lady Tarentia, and would return if any new crises arose. He also said he'd be bringing Derrinnil, the drow prisoner that he was fond of, with him to the astral sea.

He asked the heroes to apply the royal seal to two parchments and bring them to him. He did not say what the parchments would be used for.

Ryltar made his way to a church of Galasis. They were kind enough to use their magic to re-attach his foot.

Hartaniel decided to attach one of the adamantine feet the heroes had acquired in the drow city of Rilauven. Ardra had learned the bonding ritual, and used it on her fellow eladrin.

While the King was away for a few days, the city took to the tasks of rebuilding. The beleaguered citizens took to fixing the outer wall and sending supplies to their army camped outside of the city of Dunnwynn. During this stretch of time, the heroes took care of a few things...

Varis spent time looking at the stars.

Hartaniel went to visit The Seekers, an organization which was always looking to obtain items and relics for study. He gave them the spider-walker control ring from Rilauven, as well as a potion of aptitude.

Scarlet used her magic imposter's armor to disguise herself. She headed out into the city, disguised as a random peasant. Scarlet had dreams of creating a bandit gang with the satyr she met in Moonstone Keep, Benedictus, and the four dwarves the heroes had liberated from Rilauven. Yes, the dwarves were still insisting on being called Lumpy, Chumpy, Grumpy and Humpy.

Scarlet knew that there was a thieves' guild operating in the massive city of Olwynn, but she didn't know how the guild felt about other thieves. So Scarlet decided to ask around town in an innocent sort of way.

After a few hours, a tailor named Oriabel told Scarlet how her cousin was a thief who had some success. Then one night, her cousin was visited by some mysterious people who told him to leave town. He moved to Korvosa, and has never returned to Olwynn.

The satyr Benedictus lived in the Fey Park of the city with other Satyrs, near a waterfall. There were still pools of Lolth's poison blood dotting the park, remnants from the Battle of Olwynn a few weeks prior. The satyrs often "entertained" the ladies of Olwynn, both single ladies and bored housewives.

Benedictus knew of a woman named Ramietta, who was married to a jeweler called Galfred. Ramietta despised her husband and thought it would serve the greedy man right to get robbed.

Scarlet had her dwarves leave little hydra symbols around the city, a symbol of her gang. After a few days of that, Scarlet and Benedictus visited the jeweler's store. Scarlet was disguised as a noblewoman, again using the magic of her imposter's armor.

Galfred was a large, sweaty, unpleasant man. The gems and jewelry were contained in three large, rectangular glass cases. Two had locks, a third had a glowing magic sigil on it.

Benedictus made like he was trying to buy her a gift to woo her. Scarlet turned up her nose and said, "Much too common!". Then they marched out, headed back to the caves, and schemed.

Scarlet had the dwarves watch the place to see how often the town guard came by at night and looked for patterns. Then, the next night, Scarlet returned and tried to break in. She was able to finagle a window open with her handy tools and crept inside.

She picked the locks of the first two glass cases and helped herself to the jewelry. She pondered stuffing the third case with the sigil on it into her bag of holding. After some close examination, she poked it with a ten foot pole. The sigil flared with light and let out a high-pitched squealing. Scarlet climbed out of the window and ran.

The next day, Scarlet and The Blue Monk visited a high-ranking member of the Black Samurai mercenary band. They each paid Grandmaster Naomasa, a great warrior, to sharpen their skills (they both wanted to gain a power called Five Stars Arrow Deflection - a reaction power that lets you catch an arrow fired at you and throw it at an enemy).

Many of Naomasa's pupils knelt nearby and watched. Vaona, the drow worshiper of Vecna who was the Monk's main squeeze, was there observing as well.

After a few hours of general teaching, Naomasa pulled out a bow and arrows. The arrows had little blunt sandbags on the tip. He explained the technique of re-directing the arrows. He told the monk and the fighter, "Do not be fast. Do not be quick. Become the arrow as it strikes your flesh!".

The Blue Monk stood and the Grandmaster aimed. Three times in a row, The Monk caught the arrows and threw them at a nearby dummy. The students were impressed, and gathered around the half-orc, patting him on the back.

Vaona whispered to one of the students, "Y'all heard of Vecna? He's a god of secrets and stuff." The student seemed interested...

Naomasa turned to Scarlet and said, "Now it is your turn, broken blade!".

He fired an arrow at her. She caught it and redirected it. He fired another, and again she re-directed it. The third one, however, hit her in the chest and knocked her to the ground. Naomasa shook his head and said, "Feel shame, Scarlet. Feel shame."

The heroes thanked Naomasa for his help and bid him goodbye. As they walked the streets of Olwynn, Vaona said, "He seems real nice. Vecna told me he's donating a lot of gold to the church of Mari."

Scarlet perked up. "That is very nice..."

Ardra spent the downtime in her room in Moonstone Keep mastering the rituals from the drow priestess Charinidia's spellbook. She'd also taken some alchemy equipment from the Cult of Urgathoa's lair, and used it to brew a bunch of healing potions for her comrades.

Then she went to visit her grandfather, Orem, down by the docks. He wanted to teach her a few maneuvers (specifically, a power called Davros Elden's Defensive Step which is a power that lets you shift two squares and you gain a bonues to AC and Reflex for a bit) and encouraged her not to bother with magic.

Years prior, he had dabbled in magic, and in turn was almost killed by a magical explosion almost certainly set by the Cult of Urgathoa. Though he still thought it might be the work of the "void-things".

"All right, Ardra, I'm going to tie this heavy chest to your back. I got one too! Now, you know that seven-headed devil immortal who protects this district? Well, I tricked him! We're going to have to run all the way around this district in a loop, and he's gonna try to grab ya!"

Ardra laughed... but he was serious. Lord Saligia Foul was a ten foot tall red-skinned devil with seven heads, each representing a different sin (that's envy, greed, pride, sloth, wrath, lust, and gluttony). Sometimes, Orem played the heads' personalities off of each other to get things he wanted.

"Now pick up those knees and start running!", he said.

They raced through the busy docks as fishermen stared and sailors jumped back. As the pair passed an alley, Lord Saligia Foul lunged out and tried to snatch Ardra in his mighty hand. She swiftly maneuvered out of the way and kept running. Many of the heads sneered as Orem and Ardra bolted down a busy road.

Orem called back, "Ha! You'll never catch us, you big idiot!".

They ran halfway through the loop, the chests weighing them down more and more. Suddenly, Lord Saligia Foul appeared again! This time, he grabbed Ardra and picked her up in one hand.

One head of the immortal, the Proud head, said "Orem, I told you I could have your daughter!"

Lord Foul's Glutton head cried out, "Maybe I'll eat her!".

Ardra quietly cast prestidigitation to give herself a repulsive scent.

As she did this, Orem stammered, sweaty. He caught a whiff of her and said to Lord Foul, "Are you sure you want to eat her? She's pretty stinky!"

The Immortal sniffed her, gagged, and dropped her. Orem laughed and yelled, "Tricked you again! Run!". Both of them ran for it as Lord Foul took off, hoping to take a shortcut and cut them off before they got back to Orem's hut.

Lord Foul tried to snatch Ardra one last time, but she dodged with ease. He hung his seven heads in shame as they reached the hut.

The Sloth head said, "I guess you beat me."

Orem smiled and said, "Tricking you is so easy! I'm actually bored of it."

Lord Foul stomped away as Orem gave her some pointers on defensive combat - without the use of magic, of course.

Hartaniel spent some time brooding. He felt that he'd shamed himself during the battle with Lady Andaisin.

The Blue Monk sensed this and wanted to help. So he secretly went to a tavern and hired four barbarians to pick a fight with Hartaniel and then "Take a dive". The barbarians were followers of the primal spirit Kava Frosthowl (one of the three heroes who killed Orcus in the revenge of the giants campaign). Two of them were dragonborn, and two others were dwarves. The Blue Monk paid them 50 gold.

As they waited for the Monk to bring Hartaniel to the bar, the two dwarves started to feel their pride eating away at them.

The Monk found Hartaniel in Moonstone Keep, and invited the eladrin to the bar. Hartaniel sensed something was up. The Blue Monk explained that he was getting picked on at the bar by some barbarians and needed backup. Hartaniel gave him a stony glare.

Hartaniel said, "I'm still not over the battle with Lady Andaisin..."

Blue Monk replied, "I'm sorry I kicked everyone's ass." The half-orc smiled.

Hartaniel was not amused. He said, "I failed the party. You came along and saved everyone. I think it's because I'm not an orc...". Hartaniel had been a slave of the Draedsmasher orc clan, and obviously it had messed with his mind a bit.

Vecna swirled in Hartaniel's lantern, and piped up. "Why don't you just beat up The Blue Monk?"

Hartaniel said, "I may have to. Let me get a little drunk first."

The Monk and Hartaniel walked through the streets of Olwynn, evading panda-people pulling rikshaws and mostly-naked half-orcs (as is the style of clothing in the city, like a Boris Vallejo painting but without the muscly physiques).

They entered the bar. The two dwarves and two dragonborn were waiting. One of the dragonborn walked up to Hartaniel, looked down on him, and said, "We don't like your kind in here."

The Blue Monk interjected, "Just leave him alone, he's had a rough time. Back off."

The dragonborn started in on The Monk. Hartaniel said, "Don't mess with my friends."

Sitting on bar stools, one dwarf grunted to the other, "I don't know about this...". He didn't feel right even pretending to get beaten up by an eladrin.

The dwarf got up and swore in dwarven. He decided he was going to cut Hartaniel with his axe for real. The other dwarf joined him.

The first dwarf charged Hartaniel and swung. Hartaniel dodged, picked up the dwarf and threw him across the bar. He crashed into a wall lined with bottles and plopped to the ground.

The bartender looked at Hartaniel and yelled, "Hey! Come on!".

The second dwarf was offended by the dwarf tossing he'd just witnessed. He growled at Hartaniel, "We're going to cut you for real!".

The two dragonborn tried to dissuade their fellow Frosthowl, but their pleas fell on deaf ears. He raised his axe. In a swift motion, Hartaniel disarmed the dwarf.

Hartaniel shouted at the dwarf, "Do not touch me or my friends!". Intimidated, the dwarf slunk away. The dwarf sheepishly helped his friend up and they exited the bar.

As you can see, the heroes had no trouble keeping themselves occupied, even while resting after completing a quest. But maybe it was due in part to hide their grief over the passing of a friend. For after a few days, it was time for the funeral of Lucky.

Lucky the warlord had been killed by minions of Bwimb, the Paraelemental Princess of Ooze. She was to be buried in the small cemetary inside the walls of Moonstone Keep.

Attending the funeral were the heroes, various nobles, along with Lady Tarentia and her entourage of witches and pixies. Since there were no remains of Lucky at all, the adventurers placed a bottle of Lucky's favorite cheap liquor in the coffin. The Blue Monk traced the symbol of Mari on it with his blue dust.

A priestess of Mari, Mirabelle, conducted the ceremony. Because Mari, the goddess of Luck, had been captured by the primordials, the priestess' magic hadn't been working right. A couple things went wrong while she performed the simple ceremony:

- She forgot Lucky's name
- She spilled some holy wine on her vestments
- She accidentally raised an undead skeleton in the nearby ceremony, who made its' way into the temple and had to be destroyed by Ryltar.

Once the rites were given, Aurora and Solufine the bard sang a tender song in tribute (Which sounds suspiciously like "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas). A satyr accompanied them on a flute.

But then, a hideous creature stumbled into the temple. It was a white-skinned, starved undead creature wearing pieces of King Thennrynnia's armor! Could it be that the King had not used Blackrazor for a full week and had returned from the astral sea as a wight?!

Lady Tarentia ushered all of the mourners into a small room in the temple while the heroes stood and attacked the wight. As Varis prepared to launch spells, the flame insignia from the card of the deck of many things appeared on the floor near him. Lady Tarentia took notice of it...

As the adventurers closed in on the wight, it took control of their minds and made them attack each other! Once they'd hit each other, they shook off its' control.

Scarlet used a nearby pew as a weapon, thwacking the wight with it and making the thing stumble back.

As he drank a healing potion, The Monk gave it a kick to the mouth, causing lightning to shoot out of its' mouth. Ardra slashed it with her blade, bloodying the wight. Ryltar bathed it in radiance, which caused it to howl in pain.

Scarlet stabbed the wight and dragged it down an aisle of pews and threw it on the altar. Then she picked up Lucky's coffin and smashed it on the wight's head over and over, until she crushed its' skull.

Aurora, Solufine and the satyr then resumed their song as the mourners emerged from the room and began to panic.

They wondered if the King was dead. The nobles raced back to the throne room, where they found Blackrazor laid on the throne. The way things stood, If the King was dead, Lady Tarentia would rule the city of Olwynn!

But Lady Tarentia was devastated. She had loved the King and wanted to marry him. She even began to babble about how, a few nights before, she'd spent the night with the king and thought at last her wishes were going to come true.

The heroes entered, and discussed what to do. They carefully put Blackrazor into Ryltar's bag of holding. Then they found Derrinnil, who had gone with the King to the astral sea. They asked her what she and the king had done on their trip. She said they had done a number of things:

- They'd visited Stone' Rest, a town of dwarves built on a mile-long stone dead dwarf god named Rundorig. When Rundorig was a mortal, he'd been one of Thennrynnia's best friends. Derrinnil said the King had buried something at the base of a statue in the center of town.
- They'd gone to the githyanki city of Tu'Narath and met with their ruler, Gith.
- While in Tu'Narath, Derrinnil had learned the gith written language of Tir'su, in which circular runes formed sentences.
- The King had also gone hunting two-headed winged snakes (which were unleashed on the astral sea due to events that had unfolded in the Savage Tide campaign). He had told Derrinnil that he'd used Blackrazor to kill some of the serpents. This turned out to be a lie.

The adventurers decided to have Tarentia use a ritual to send the heroes to Thennrynnia's astral skiff, so they could go to Stone's Rest and dig up whatever had been buried.

The trip on the skiff took ten hours. Along the way, they noticed that something was off with Derrinnil. They examined her magically, and discerned that she was pregnant! She admitted she was, and that King Thennrynnia was the father.

The heroes worried what Lady Tarentia would do if she found out. They talked about leaving Derrinnil somewhere in the astral sea for her own safety.

They arrived at Stone's Rest and were received warmly by the pious dwarf community. They dug up what had been buried - one of the parchments that they'd put a royal seal on! But the parchment was blank. Ardra examined it and realized that the King had written on it using an ancient magic involving moon letters. The parchment could only be read under the light of a moon.

Derrinnil agreed to stay in Stone's Rest. They were able to magically return to Moonstone Keep. It was night time there, and so they held up the parchment to read it. The letters appeared. They were looking at the will of the king. There were a number of provisions:

- He left Lady Tarentia as the new Queen
- Blackrazor was left to whomever was bold enough to wield it
- If an heir was found, the heir was to become King or Queen on its' 18th birthday. Until that time, Aurora, Ardra, The Blue Monk, Scarlet, Varis, Ryltar and Hartaniel were to protect them from harm.
- If Darsidian, the king's advisor who had been captured by the primordials along with Mari, were to be found alive, then he had the power to over-ride any of these declarations.

They showed the will to Lady Tarentia, who was truly devastated by the death of the King. She assumed that the talk of the heir was in case she herself had become pregnant.

One of her witches pulled the heroes aside. She explained that Queen Tarentia wanted to see Varis' card from the deck of many things. Varis reluctantly handed it over. The witch touched it and had a vision of Mari, the goddess of luck, as had Varis when he first touched it.

She brought it to Tarentia and returned to the heroes. The witch explained that if the heroes could assemble the entire deck, that Lady Tarentia could use her magic on it to trace the location of Mari.

Through the use of a simple seek rumor ritual, it was discerned that the cards were spread out in Gardmore abbey, a home to paladins of Io, a day or two south of Olwynn.

The Queen had commanded them. The adventurers rested for the night and then set out on the back of their giant bird, Dark Secret, the next morning. By nightfall, they'd arrived at the abbey.

The abbey grounds covered most of a hillside in the middle of the downs. The overgrown path that lead from the main road ended in a gate flanked by squat, square towers. To either side of the gate stretched a curtain wall showing signs of age, supported by occasional towers and buttresses. Above the wall, a caved-in temple yet stood proudly on the hilltop.

South of the gate, the abbey's outer wall was draped with ivy, and the canopy of a thick forest was visible beyond. A tall watchtower stood at the south end of the hill, marking the end of the curtain wall. The wall extended halfway around the hill, and nature took care of the rest. The hillside was so steep on the west and south sides that a military assault would be impossible, though a smaller force might be able to scale it.

To their dismay, the heroes saw that the abbey had fallen and the paladins of Io were either gone, or dead. Orcs held the village near the main gate, and monsters seemed to roam in the other areas of the abbey.

Hartaniel recognized some markings scrawled in blood near the main gate. It was the symbol of the Draedsmasher orc clan, the clan of which he was once a happy slave. Hartaniel had attained the rank of chief of slaves, but was framed for murder by a fellow halfling slave named Galan the Sly.

The adventurers left Dark Secret on the road a way back, and quietly walked up to the main gate under a night sky. The gate's portcullises were up, and the heroes spotted dead orcs on top of the gate and inside the entrance way. There was even a fresh corpse of an ogre, who'd been cut, scorched and stabbed to death.

The heroes came closer, wondering who, or what, had killed these orcs. They'd been dead maybe ten minutes.

Hartaniel explained that the Draedsmashers had never been at odds with the paladins of Io. They left each other alone. Why the orcs were now in the abbey, he could not say.

There were a few more orc corpses near the dead ogre. One had been a friend to Hartaniel - Bigdish Shadowraider. The other had been an enemy, Rolg Ballcutter.

Looking at the dead monsters, Scarlet laughed and said, "It is as though adventurers already came through here."

Past the gate to their right was a large village. Some of the buildings had been burned. Many orcs wandered the village, and looked like they'd made it their home.

Hartaniel pulled out the hooded green cloak that the drow had given him in the city of Rilauven. He put up the hood, hoping if the orcs spotted him, he would not be recognized. The eladrin also put on a plaguebringer mask, to further conceal his identity.

The heroes discussed sneaking through the orc village to see what they could learn. They spotted a building to their left, a mighty keep of some sort. They decided to check that out first. To get to it, they needed to walk through an adjoining, ruined building.

The adventurers walked through the ruined building and spotted the doors to the keep. They approached cautiously, hands on the hilts of their weapons.

An enormous two-headed giant sat with its' back against the doors to the keep. The eyelids of one of its' heads were half-closed, and it picked its' teeth with the grisly bone of a recent kill.

"What's the password?", it grumbled with a yawn.

Hartaniel knew the ettin. Each head had its' own name: Spike and Bruse. He hoped it wouldn't recognize him through his disguise.

The Blue Monk greeted it in Giant.

The ettin rose to its' feet. "Just give 'em the reminder, Spike," the right head said, "so's we can get back to our nappin'."

"Fine, Bruse," Spike grunted, then recited:

"A box of white bones, never empty nor full, though it ever leaks the treasure inside.
It holds safe all you've got, unless you're a sot, when its locks with wine may be plied.
Smash it in like an egg, but what do you know? They'll not find the treasure you hide.
"

Hartaniel said, "Is it life?".

"It's a mouth", Scarlet guessed.

The ettin shook both heads. "You're wrong. Go away."

Scarlet pondered for a moment. "Is it a skull?"

The ettin sighed. "You said the right answer, but you said it late!" The heads looked at each other and asked, "What should we do?". Then they turned back to Scarlet and said, "You can't just keep guessing 'til you say the right word! We cannot let you in."

The Blue Monk lied and said they'd been drinking. One head perked up. "Drunk..?", Bruse asked. Through facial expressions, it indicated to the heroes that it would let them in if they brought him feywine... without the other head finding out.

Through a bit more back and forth, Bruse also indicated that fey wine could be found in the "fey grove" to the south of the orc village. Bruse further advised them that the heads alternated naps, and that he was going to sleep for six hours, and then the other head would have its' turn.... so the heroes would be free to hand over their bribe of feywine to Bruse without Spike knowing.

The adventurers left the ettin, and went back to the main gate. Scarlet pulled out a bottle of wine she'd stolen from Dagger Rock. Ardra cast prestidigitation on it to make it taste like feywine. As an eladrin, she was familiar enough with it. The flavor would last for one hour.

They returned to the ettin and offered the wine. But Bruse was asleep. Spike was awake. He said, "Why would I want that..?".

They asked Spike if there was anything they could get for him, in exchange for passage into the keep. Spike lowered his voice to a conspiratorial tone. He explained that the leader of the orcs, Bakrosh, lived in the keep. Bakrosh had a pair of magical sending stones. He told the adventurers that if they promised to get him the stones, he'd let them go in.

Hartaniel was shocked. When he was their slave, the Draedsmashers were ruled by an orc named Grang Hellbreaker, not Bakrosh. Bakrosh had apparently somehow unseated Grang. Hartaniel knew there was a good chance Grang was dead, as Bakrosh was an incredibly vicious warrior. Bakrosh was also something of a bully, who had treated Hartaniel poorly.

The heroes didn't like the idea of promising the magic stones. They told the ettin "We'll see..", and left.

They passed through the gate back outside of the abbey and followed the wall north. A building was built into the wall, with doors facing them.

The ruined garrison was shrouded in gloom. The air felt somehow heavier.

Two massive wooden portals engraved with twin reliefs of rampant dragons and the symbol of Io stood closed. Each dragon bore two swords, one held aloft, and one pointing downward. Above the door, an inscription read: "Ever vigilant the dragon."

A vague black silhouette of an armored figure materialized outside the door, accompanied by an otherworldly cold.

"Only the bearer of the lonely sword passes this way unharmed," it said. "Vandomar must open the seal."

Ryltar wondered if Vandomar was the name of a sword. He held up his bag of holding and said, "Blackrazor's in this..."

The shadow entity looked straight ahead and said, "DOOM. We tried, and we failed. May Io forgive us."

The heroes didn't know what the creature was talking about.

The Blue Monk asked, "Who is Vandomar?"

The shadowy knight said, "We must protect the brazier of silver fire!". Then it faded away.

Ardra and Ryltar examined the doors. They could see a faint, glowing glyph of warding. They decided to try to disarm it. They spread out, so in case there was an explosion, not all of them would be hit.

Scarlet tried to disable it, but instead triggered a wave of cold which washed over her and hit Ardra, covering her in frost and injuring her. Scarlet was able to fall to the ground to avoid the blast. At the same time, the doors swung open.

In the garrison were four statues, a crumbling stairwell, and a large chest. Also inside were an ape-demon and four shadow-knights! The ape-demon, also known as a barlgura, roared and stomped toward the intruders.

The heroes lined up in the entrance, battling the barlgura and the shadowy mad wraiths. One wraith passed its' hand through The Blue Monk, and forced him to run outside and strike Varis.

Another wraith swung a shadowy blade at Ardra, but she blocked the attacks with a fire shield spell. Ryltar an Ardra attacked back, infusing their weapons with radiance. The wraiths shrieked in agony, as they were vulnerable to it.

Aurora and Varis launched off range attacks, behind the "wall" of their allies engaging in melee.

A wraith passed a hand through Scarlet, forcing her to attack Rylar. She plunged her blade deep into the drow (a critical). Scarlet shook it off and apologized.

Ardra turned and dealt with the barlgura. In short order, blood matted its' tangled fur. Aurora's blink dog raced forth and bit the barlgura's leg. Scarlet made her way back, and plunged her broken blade into the barlgura's neck. She pulled it out and did it again. The barlgura let out a croak and fell to the ground.

The adventurers finished off the wraiths.

They looked around. There were four statues of paladins. Three held real swords.

The Sacred Chest was on the far side of the room. Sturdy wooden poles could be inserted through metal rings affixed to it, allowing four guardians to carry it. The chest was decorated with inlays of dragons breathing silver fire.

It bore the inscription: "The just shall lay down their arms and bask in the light of justice."

Careful examination revealed four slots about the width and thickness of a sword blade, two in each end of the chest.

The heroes took the trio of swords from the statues. They placed three swords in three slots, and then Aurora placed her magical unicorn horn in the fourth slot. It worked! The lid swung open, letting out a radiant burst of silvery light (harmful only to undead and elemental creatures).

Inside were jewels, a magic symbol of Io, and a magic brazier. The brazier seemed only to retain its' magic when it was inside the chest.

They patched up their wounds for a few minutes and talked about what to do next. They hadn't found any of the cards from the deck yet, though there was still much to explore.

They decided to sneak through the orc village to see if they could learn anything, and make their way to a weird tower off in the distance...

17. The Pallid Princess

2/24/12: We had some interesting developments...

Saga of Valor
Book One - NyrodSpace War 3

Chapter Seventeen: The Pallid Princess

Anjou, Primal Spirit of Storms
Clarissa, Goddess of Fire & Battle
Kava Frosthowl, Primal Spirit of Ice
Storm, God of War
Zev, God of Night

While our heroes began to assemble Mari's Deck of Many Things at Gardmore Abbey, they did not realize that their recent actions had aided the gods as well. In the Cult of Urgathoa's lair, the heroes had found a crystal ball with a map of the phlogiston inside it. The map depicted many crystal spheres. Two of them glowed. One was the heroes' home universe of NyrodSpace, the other was of a distant sphere called GreatSpace.

Word of the phlogiston map spread amongst those close to the heroes, and prayers were sent to the heavens. The gods heard these prayers, and thus they gained knowledge of the phlogiston map. At last they had a clue as to where Mari could be, as well as where Lolth and the Primordial exarchs might be lurking.

Just prior to meeting with the gods to discuss the phlogiston map, Anjou, the Primal Spirit of Storms, was attending to a personal matter. Not too long ago, she'd created a mountain called Mt. Analogue north of Olwynn. There was a bell at the top. If her followers could climb to the top and ring the bell, Anjou would grant them a boon.

But she'd learned that mysterious genasi, humanoids touched by both fire and earth, had been slaughtering anyone who attempted to climb.

Anjou sent an avatar of herself down to the mountain - a bear infused with lightning. When five of the mysterious genasi attacked three elves who were preparing to climb, the bear mauled the genasis. The bear questioned the lone surviving elf, but the elf knew nothing.

Anjou decided to put the issue aside, for it was time for her to convene with the gods.

Northwest of Olwynn, before the epic mountains and Zev's City of Night, was the barbarian plains. The plains were a land of eternal snow, where the Frosthowl Clan wandered. Here is where the gods had agreed to meet.

Io, god of dragons, and Galasis god of magic, were to stay in NyrodSpace to oversee things.

It was cold in the frozen wastes. The bright sun shined down on the young deities.

Zev, the lich-god, said, "We should have met in my City of Night."

Kava Frosthowl replied, "No."

Duskeater, Zev's Imp, who was a demon lord as well as the king of ghouls, said from inside Zev's ribcage, "Oh look, it's the nerd dragonborn."

Kava ignored the imp and tried to think of the fastest way to travel to GreatSpace. Because their godly power was greatly diminished outside of NyrodSpace, they could not simply appear there. They'd have to use more conventional means. If they took a spelljammer, the journey through the phlogiston would take two to three months.

Anjou thought perhaps they could go through Sigil, the planar city. But then she remembered, godly entities such as they were unable to enter the city. The Lady of Pain somehow wielded the power to bar all gods, demon lords, and like beings from her city.

Zev thought perhaps they could send a mortal minion to go there and find a portal. Duskeater suggested sending one of his servant imps.

And so it was that PaunchCrammer, servant of Zanestra Shadowborn in the city of Olwynn was called upon for a great quest. The portly imp was flapping about The Cage in no time. The friendly fellow happily flew from market to market, chomping on fruit harvested from the feywild, drinking a dark syrupy drink from the Shadowfell, savoring a dretch steak from the abyss and topped it off with some flavored ice from the frosty depths of the Elemental Chaos.

While on his epic restaurant tour, he eventually came to a place called the Styx Oarsmen. There, he met a mysterious githzerai named Rule-of-Three. A deal was brokered. Rule-of-Three received 10,000 gold, and the gods received a map that pinpointed a portal in the astral sea which led to the interior of the sphere of GreatSpace.

The gods boarded the Flying Fortress (the githyanki airship commandeered by the heroes in the Scales of War campaign) and sailed through the astral sea. Storm flew alongside them on the back of his black dragon. His four other dragons flew with them as well. The gods easily found the color pool that was a planar portal to GreatSpace.

They passed through, and appeared in GreatSpace hovering 100 feet above a forest on the mountainous world of Hecht. Below their ship, they spotted a decimated village. Three Leukodaemons were tearing apart some disease-ravaged corpses.

Kava jumped off the ship, plunged 100 feet, and landed on the back of a leukodaemon, killing it instantly. Anjou jumped alongside her, and plunged her artifact spear through another. Storm jumped down, and cleaved the last one in half.

They searched the town, and saw that everyone appeared to have been killed by a disease that Zev identified as The Scarlet Plague.

They found a temple devoted to Lolth. Zev studied the holy texts within. He learned that at one time, GreatSpace had 12 gods. But Lolth had convinced Yagnor, a God of a race known as the Grevans, to betray his fellow gods. Together, Yagnor and Lolth killed them all.

And then, Lolth betrayed Yagnor. She buried him in a desert up to his neck, magically trapping him there for all eternity. Lolth became the sole goddess of GreatSpace.

Recently, she'd brought Urgathoa to GreatSpace. Her cults swiftly grew, and they began to infect and kill off non-drow communities in the universe with different magical diseases.

As Zev read, Anjou meditated, trying to tap into the world's primal power to give it added strength.

Clarissa searched the town for survivors. She found a small family of beautiful blonde humans hiding in a cellar. She gave them some food. The father's name was Farland. He explained that Urgathoa had unleashed a disease on the town. He praised Lolth, looking above fearfully.

Clarissa's fiery hair blazed. She said, "I'm sure there are other gods that would be of much better use to you."

Farland looked at Clarissa quizzically. "There are no other gods. They're all dead."

She smiled at Farland and said, "There are new gods, my friend."

He laughed nervously, looking around as if Lolth was in the shadows. "New Gods? Lolth won't stand for that! She'd kill them with her poison!" He dropped his voice to a whisper and said, "She's always listening!".

Kava dragged all of the dead bodies in the village and made a giant pile. Then she set the corpses ablaze. Once that was done, she used her ice breath to chase off the flies.

Clarissa introduced the family to the other gods. Farland looked at them. Kava had a small fiery orb (the eye of the old gods) orbiting her head. Anjou held the arrow of fate, her artifact spear in her lap. And Zev held the Wand of Orcus. Farland said, "My, look at the powerful magic you wield. Where is it that you have come from? And have come to our beautiful world of Hecht... thanks to Lolth."

"Uh... No thanks to Lolth," Anjou said.

The family gasped. The heresy! Farland cried, "You don't know what you say!"

"Oh I know what I say," the warden replied.

Storm sighed. "You don't fear Lolth, do you?"

Farland looked to the sky, as if he expected lighting to strike them all. "I revere Lolth!"

Storm said, "That might be a mistake."

Farland whispered to the shifter, "She's always listening!"

Anjou said, "Lolth's very busy. She's trying to destroy where we came from."

Farland nodded and said judiciously, "I... have no opinion on that. I merely wish to keep my family safe." He spotted some of Storm's dragons flying around their ship. Farland cried out, "Dragons! They're with you?!"

Anjou explained, "Where we come from, we're actually deities. In a sphere called NyrodSpace."

Farland said, "Well I would advise you to be wary." He whispered, "The drow come out at night. They live underground. And there's cults of Urgathoa spreading. We have been told to accept and embrace her. We are to be subjected to her disease experiments."

Zev cast a ritual on the leukodaemons' remains to see what they knew. He learned that Lolth was likely on another world of GreatSpace, called Thesalys. On Thesalys, was a place called the Spiral Desert. Zev had a vision of a great ruined temple where he believed Urgathoa resided.

They brought Farland, his wife and his child on board the Flying Fortress. They flew them to OstDuven.

The gods stayed on the ship, floating above the town. At night, they spotted some drow - two females and three males. They broke into a house, dragged a family out and forced them to the town square. There, the evil drow tied down the father and a priestess began whipping him with a fang whip.

Storm teleported down and let out a Call to the Moon. The drow grabbed their heads and shouted in pain.

The drow priestess turned and hissed in drow, "Who dares!?"

Storm said, "A god greater than yours."

She raised her whip, and Storm cut off her hands, as quick as lightning. Blood sprayed from the stumps as she fell to her knees, screaming. The three male drow turned and ran. Anjou teleported down and grabbed the two females. She let lightning course through her body and into theirs, killing one of them.

Clarissa teleported down. She cut off the three fleeing males, and knocked them out with punches to the face.

Zev grabbed the surviving female, pulled out her eye, and ate it. She shrieked in horror. DuskEater laughed. The imp said, "So effective, oh great one!".

They demanded information from the drow. The drow claimed that Lolth herself sometimes appeared in The Spiral Desert.

The gods got on the flying fortress and flew to the world of Thesalys. The journey took a few days. During this time, Zev read more of the books he'd taken from the Church of Lolth.

Kava Frosthowl stood on deck, sharpened her axe, and fixed her steely gaze on the blue and green world of Thesalys.

Zev learned that when the gods had created GreatSpace, they used the last of the Mother Stone that forged the worlds to create a magical tablet imbued with a portion of each of their energy. As long as the tablet was in one peace, the gods could not harm one another. The Tablet of the Ages was a symbol of the truce between the gods.

But Yagnor's betrayal caused the tablet to shatter into 12 pieces, each of which contained the divine power of a different deity. As the gods battled Lolth and Yagnor, the fragments passed from mortal to mortal. Many of the fragments were taken out of GreatSpace altogether.

Once Lolth had won, she'd since been searching for the 12 fragments. It was said that she had three in her possession.

Zev also read a tome called The Menus Kai, which spoke of the culture of the Grevans. The Grevans were a warlike people. Each Grevan's goal was to die in battle with honor, so that they could join the faar'maki. The faar'maki was an army comprised of Grevan ancestor spirits who had fallen with honor.

The Flying Fortress arrived at Thesalys. The vast Spiral Desert was below them. The heroes flew about for a while, and spotted a vast army of 85,000 soldiers marching. They flew closer, and saw that they were grevans - grey-skinned humanoids who appeared to be a hybrid of orcs and eladrin.

There was a smaller contingent of grevans a few miles north. There were a band of grevans holding a platform on which more grevans stood, guarded an old, withered female grevan sitting on a throne. She seemed to be blind.

The heroes flew low, and called down to them.

A warrior called up in the Grevan language, "Who are you and what do you want?". Zev understood all languages and was able to respond.

"Enemies of Lolth", called the lich.

"Enemies of Lolth, eh? We could use that ship! There's 500 of us and a couple of you... Lich!"

The heroes talked to each other, as the old grevan woman whispered something to one of her warriors. The warrior called up, "Sheehab demands that you come down and talk to use face to face!"

Storm teleported down and stood in the desert before the Grevans. Anjou and Kava accompanied him.

The old grevan woman spoke. "I am Sheehab! Who are you? And what do you want with us? I should warn you, these 500 warriors are of my litter. They are some of the strongest grevans there are. They will defend me to the death."

The heroes saw that the gevans wore a lot of stolen drow armor, and proudly displayed drow skulls on their shoulders.

Zev called to them, "We're here to kill Lolth. We'll earn our respect by challenging you in battle. We'll defeat your best warrior and then we shall work together. That is what we propose."

Sheehab said, "Very well. But this will be a fight to the death! Who among you will fight Varuna?"

A tall, female, muscled grevan stepped forward. She wielded a massive, chipped two-handed sword.

Storm faced off with her. Varuna said in Grevan, "A cat-man?", and laughed. "Should I die today, I shall join the Faar'maki, and there is no greater honor. And so I cannot lose."

Storm jumped past her, turned, and cut off Varuna's head (he rolled a critical). The Grevans gasped.

Blind Sheehab called out, "What has transpired?".

One of her warriors told her, "He killed her with a single blow!".

Sheehab nodded and called out, "You are strong indeed! Thank you for sending one of my litter to join the Faar'maki."

"It was my pleasure," Storm replied.

Anjou said, "I like these people."

Sheehab told them where to find the ruined temple in exchange for a promise to tell her if they found Yagnor.

The gods made their way to the ruined temple. As they flew over the desert, the weird, massive sun of GreatSpace beamed down on them.

DuskEater said to Storm, "You did all right. But Zev would have killed her with more flair!"

Storm asked, "Well then why didn't he?"

The imp said, "Other people do the work for him. It's just the smart thing to do."

Storm said, "So you're lazy."

"Not lazy. Smart. I can't believe you don't know this, but you're all just his puppets, don't you get it?! So stupid! Hahahaha! See? I can say it right to your faces!"

Zev said, "Don't be rude, my lowly imp."

Anjou asked DuskEater, "Do you remember the last time you insulted me?"

DuskEater climbed into Zev's ribcage and mumbled, "Who cares? You're so insignificant."

Kava said, "You know, I think Zev has a handle on this. The rest of us could probably leave. You can fight Lolth."

Zev was amused. He said, "You great gods are being stirred by a lowly imp? I expect better."

DuskEater looked at Kava, standing right by the railing. The desert was far below the ship. He whispered a bit too loud, "Master, we should push her off the ship."

Kava said, "Mountainroots." (referring to her encounter power which prevented forced movement, which came in handy every single session of the revenge of the giants campaign).

Duskeater began rueing. "Mountainroots!", he cried.

They arrived at the ruined temple. It once held twelve giant statues of the deities of GreatSpace. Now, most of them had crumbled. A stairwell led below. Powerful magic warded the area from scrying...

The gods headed down the steps and came upon a vast open chamber. Stone crypts with loose and cracked lids were placed throughout the room. On the far end of the room was a swirling font of primordial energy, shifting from fire, ice, earth and other elements at random.

Standing on the font was Urgathoa, the primordial exarch. She appeared to be a human woman with golden skin from the waist up. Below that was the body of a bloody skeleton. She held a long scythe, and did not seem to be alarmed by the heroes' intrusion.

She was not alone. Spread throughout the room were her guards and heralds:

- Mother's Maw, an ogre-sized floating skull, surrounded by a cloud of flies, trailed maggots and had blood dripping from its' fanged teeth.
- Olyx, a vampire priest of Urgathoa
- Two Death Titans, each with four soul shards swirling about them.

The giants charged the heroes. One tore into Storm with its' great axe (a critical for 78 points of damage). Storm sliced back, and then Clarissa plunged her blade into the titan, stunning it (yes, Clarissa has an at-will that stuns).

Kava flanked the stunned titan and bloodied it with a mighty blow. Then she breathed ice on it, killing it. Storm transformed into a panther and mauled the other titan.

Mother's Maw was slowly hovering across the room to engage the heroes. Anjou slipped past the titans to meet the strange skull.

Olyx, the vampire, was running from crypt to crypt, using them as cover as he got closer and closer to the heroes. Kava spotted this, and charged the vampire. As she brushed past a crypt, she saw glowing red eyes from within. Suddenly, a crypt thing rose up from within! The skeletal, dusty, robed humanoid pointed an accusatory bone finger at her. Moments later, crypt things rose from the eight other crypts throughout the room as well!

Kava sliced open the vampire and knocked him to the ground (for 91 points...). Then she brought her axe down on him three more times (action point, hurricane of blades, doing another 142 points of damage!). Olyx, hurt badly, staggered to his feet and cast a spell that should have stunned the dragonborn. Instead, her eye of the old gods that she'd obtained in the ancient realm of Death's Reach absorbed the attack!

A crypt thing pointed a finger at Kava and fired off a spell at her. It teleported the barbarian to a far corner of the room.

The others battled the remaining titan as Urgathoa remained in the primordial font, seemingly unconcerned and waiting for them to approach. Storm swung twice, and cut down the titan (hitting once for 145 points of damage!). A crypt thing teleported Storm clear across the room, so that he was only a few feet away from the primordial font and Urgathoa herself! Storm stabbed her and knocked her to the ground as the font swirled and granted them both special boons, from earth armor, to flaming weapons, to watery movement, and so on.

Clarissa made her way to Mother's Maw and stunned the skull with a slash of her enchanted khopesh.

Anjou held up her spear, the Arrow of Fate, and sent out lightning tendrils that dragged Mother's Maw and Olyx to either side of her. Then she stabbed Olyx, bloodying the vampire. She assumed the form of the world forger, becoming a being made of swirling magma. Zev pelted Olyx with an eldritch bolt.

Clarissa saw that Storm was alone against the Pallid Princess, and raced across the room, sweat glistening on her taut thighs (don't ask).

Kava joined Anjou in fighting Mother's Maw. Kava swung her axe right through the skull, utterly destroying it. Blood and maggots sprayed everywhere (Yep, Kava had another critical).

In the primordial font, Urgathoa got to her feet. With but a glance, she infected Storm with the lethal Scarlet Plague! Red blisters began to form beneath the shifter's fur. Then she slashed him with her deadly scythe as the font again granted them earth armor (giving them resist 15 until the next round).

Clarissa had made her way across the room, dodging the spells of the crypt things along the way. She ran into the primordial font and stabbed Urgathoa.

Zev the lich-god, still near the steps, cast an eyebite spell on Olyx, injuring the vampire and making himself invisible to him.

A crypt thing teleported Kava away from the remains of Mother's Maw. She charged from the corner back to Olyx, hitting him, knocking him to the ground, and hurting him badly. Olyx turned into a mist and tried to escape, But Kava and Anjou's magic weapons sliced through him, and dispersed him forever.

A crypt thing teleported Anjou to the primordial font. In the font, Urgathoa held out a hand, and caused Storm's Scarlet Plague to spread throughout his body. He fell to the ground, dying!

The heroes closed in on Urgathoa and began slicing into her. She called out to Lolth for aid. A nearby archway glowed purple in response..

Lolth and two six-armed drow demonbinders stepped through. Zev, from across the room, could see that Lolth was holding three new magic items. She had found three pieces of the Tablet of the ages, and had affixed the fragments to a gauntlet, a headband, and a staff respectively.

The lich began to approach, cautiously. As he neared a crypt thing, he held out a hand and de-animated the creature. It turned to dust, and its' robes flopped harmlessly into the crypt. He flew up 20 feet, quietly continuing to come closer to the drow goddess.

Storm suddenly snapped awake, got up, and resumed battling Urgathoa. Clarissa bloodied Urgathoa, slicing open her shoulder.

Kava healed Storm some more. Urgathoa spun about, slicing everyone with her scythe. Storm was wracked with disease and still hurt badly.

Lolth and the demonbinders didn't like the look of things. Lolth mentioned to her allies in drow that she planned on getting one shot in on the heroes and then leaving Urgathoa to her fate. Anjou heard this, and ran over to them. Anjou held up the Arrow of Fate and unleashed a draconic frightening presence on them. All three creatures were stunned! Then Anjou summoned more power from her spear, and breathed astral fire on them!

Zev saw his opening. He hit Lolth with a spell that further stunned her, and then he landed next to her. He snatched away her headband, while DuskEater reached out from his ribcage and stole her staff.

Zev reeled from the awesome power of the fragments. They contained a portion of the power of two distinct gods. The headband held a fragment of Cerbel, God of Prophecy. The Staff was of Mordrun, a God of Magic. Zev immediately began to see visions of the future, and felt new spells at his fingertips. The power was awesome indeed! He used the staff to create a portal back to the town of OstDuven, and left his allies behind! Clarissa cursed.

Lolth was still unmoving. Anjou took the gauntlet and put it on. The gauntlet held the fragment of Yagnor, god of the grevans. Anjou sensed its' power - she could summon 5,000 soldiers to do her bidding! And they were not any soldiers, they were the Faar'maki, the grevan ancestor spirits who had fallen with honor in battle!

Lolth shook off the effects of Zev's spell, and made her way back through the archway. One of her demonbinders went with her. The other was still stunned and could not move. The portal to the demonweb began to fade. Anjou looked in, and realized that she could go in, and summon 5,000 grevans to assault Lolth's Demonweb Pits! She knew she had to do it. Just as the portal was closing, the warden jumped through.

Over in the font, Kava tore into Urgathoa with her axe. Storm gain fell to the ground, dying. The Scarlet Plague had a hold on the avenger! Kava swung again, and again... and again. The barbarian completely destroyed Urgathoa with an absolutely godly assault (She had two attacks... criticals with both. And when she gets a critical, she can attack one more time. The third attack roll - another critical. Total damage: 391 points!).

Urgathoa was defeated.

The heroes cured and revived Storm, as Anjou battled the drow in the Demonweb.

Zev appeared in the streets of Ostduven. His aura swirled about him, and immediately killed a few children and dogs. The blonde-haired people shrieked and ran in all directions. Zev did not care.

He thought for a moment, and then created a portal back into the chamber. He stepped through, walked up to Urgathoa, and took some of her gory remains.

The heroes talked, and decided ultimately to join Anjou. But first, they sought out Yagnor.

The God of the Grevans was not hard to find. With Urgathoa dead and Lolth on the run, their magic could no longer conceal his location.

Yagnor was indeed buried up to his neck in the desert. He had no eyes or mouth, and two vipers grew from his shoulder. One whispered what it saw into his ear. The other viper spoke for him.

The gods freed him and brought him to the grevan army. Yagnor agreed to help the heroes in any way he could. The gods gave the grevans some of the magic items they'd found in Urgathoa's sanctum, intent on gaining followers to spread their godly influence to GreatSpace. Kava gave some gifts to the blonde-haired villagers of the world of Hecht.

Then, they headed back to the sanctum. Zev rejoined them there, and used the staff of Mordrun to activate the portal to the Demonweb Pits. They stepped through.

The gods had decided to take fate into their own hands. They were intent on rampaging through the Demonweb and killing Lolth's true form to end her evil schemes once and for all....

I didn't expect the PCs to jump into the demonweb. It's altered my plans considerably. I'll be running god adventures once every few weeks to resolve this, using material from Expedition to the Demonweb Pits..!

18. The Wizard's Tower

2/27/12: Three players couldn't make it, so we had an NPC round out the party. Gardmore Abbey has been really fun so far.

Saga of Valor
Book One - NyrodSpace War 3

Chapter Eighteen: The Wizard's Tower

Hartaniel - Eladrin Barbarian
Ryltar - Drow Avenger
Scarlet - Human Fighter
Varis - Half-Elf Warlock

Sanctioning #: 12-02-3291008

The heroes had decided to sneak into the orc-occupied village to see what they could learn about the abbey.

Under cover of night, they crept from building to building. A few orcs were walking the streets, but most were inside the buildings sharpening their weapons or eating.

A hill giant walked the streets with a halfling slave riding on its' shoulder. The adventurers wondered what that was all about. The halfling wore nice clothes. Nice, at least, compared to the rags the orcs wore.

Two orcs guarded a jail/slave pen. And many orcs gathered in a large building, where a loud conversation was taking place.

The heroes decided to investigate the jail. They crept around the back of the small building. Looking in through a barred window, they saw three prisoners. Two of them were heavily-scarred lolthbound goblins. The third was a massive female panda-person, wearing gleaming plate mail that bore the symbol of Io.

The panda was staring out of a barred window. Scarlet sidled up next to the wall nearest the window and went, "Psst!".

The panda woman looked through the bars at Scarlet, her eyes wide.

Scarlet whispered, "We're trying to figure out what's going on."

The panda-woman said, "Who - who are you?"

"We're adventurers from Olwynn. We just got here."

The panda-woman whispered back, "I see. A few weeks ago, the red dragon and his army attacked Gardmore Abbey, which was the home of myself and my fellow paladins of Io. During the siege, something ...magical.... happened and now everything is in chaos."

"What kind of magical thing?", Scarlet asked.

"I'm not sure. Can you get to Dragon's Roost? It's one of the buildings up on the central hill."

Scarlet looked up to the top of the hill, where four buildings stood. Under the light of the moon and the world of Dracos, it looked to be a dangerous journey.

The panda-woman continued, "I know a ritual. If you can bring me to the Roost, I can conduct the ritual and purge the darkness from this place. My name is Xiangmao."

Scarlet said, "I think we can make that happen. We're looking for something..."

The two lolthbound goblins in the pen with Xiangmao began to get curious. Xiangmao glared at them, and made like she wasn't talking to anyone. The goblins went back to picking their scabs.

Scarlet whispered to Xiangmao, "We're looking for the Deck of Many Things. We hear that it's scattered throughout the abbey."

"Is that what was used?" Xiangmao thought for a moment. "The leader of the Draedsmasher orcs is named Bakrosh. They say he has acquired magical powers recently. Perhaps the powers are connected to the deck. It is said he can kill someone just by pointing at them!"

Scarlet said, "By the Gods! Thank you for telling us."

"This village, just a few weeks ago, was where all of we paladins of Io lived. Mekkalath, the red dragon, has our blood on his hands. It is said that the dragon has gems bound in his hide. It is also said that he has a sister who lairs somewhere near here as well."

"Good relations with his sister, or bad?"

"As far as I know... good." Things just kept sounding grimmer.

Scarlet crept toward her hidden allies to discuss what to do.

As they talked, Varis' skull familiar sprung to life. The spirit of his YasnaBrinna, his drow matron, was trapped inside. She said of Xiangmao, "Just leave her! She's inconsequential. Just like the boy!"

They ignored her.

Ryltar turned invisible and crept around to the front of the pen. He carefully took a key ring from the belt of one of the orc guards. Then Varis launched off a spell at a far building. As the orcs gasped and cautiously investigated he resultant fire across the street, the heroes quickly opened the door and freed Xiangmao. The lolthbound goblins tried to escape too, but Scarlet shut the door on them. The goblins, angry, began to shout.

The orcs turned at the sound of the shouting goblins, and saw the heroes freeing their prisoner. They let out a blood-curdling cry and gave chase.

The heroes ran, and were able to lose the orcs. They climbed the ivy covered wall and made their way to the reliquary, where they'd fought the barlgura and the mad wraiths.

As they walked to it, Xiangmao said, "You entered the Reliquary? Bad things happened there. Is the brazier of silver fire inside?"

"Yes."

She rubbed her chin thoughtfully. "From what I understand, some of the paladins tried to protect it - but they failed."

Varis said, "They were turned into ghosts."

Xiangmao grew silent.

They entered the reliquary. Xiangmao said, "This is a good place for us. The orcs are afraid to come here. Did you use Vandomar's ritual to open the doors?"

The heroes hadn't. A wraith had mentioned Vandomar's name to them, but the heroes ended up triggering the door's protective wards when they forced their way inside.

Scarlet asked, "Who is Vandomar?"

"He is a wizard."

"I guess that explains why it blew up on us."

"He lives in a tower not far from here." The heroes looked through the reliquary's arrow slits as she pointed it out. The tower stood at the opposite edge of the orc vilage.

Xiangmao said mournfully, "Poor Vandomar. He was in love with Elaida, a paladin. He spent all his time creating magical wards and protections to keep her safe. But they weren't enough. She died during the siege. I think he went mad."

Scarlet thought for a moment. "Maybe we should visit there..." At the very least, a wizard's tower was a likely place to find cards from the Deck of Many Things.

Varis looked up at Xiangmao and asked, "Why are you the only one still alive?"

Mao's face darkened. "As a panda-person, the orcs take great pleasure in torturing me."

Out of an arrow slit, they saw a flying creature approaching the reliquary. It looked to be a pelican. A portly imp was riding on it, chewing on something. It was PaunchCrammer, the imp of Zanestra Shadowborn who was bad at being evil. They opened the doors and let him in.

"Hi, guys!", he said cheerfully. PaunchCrammer had completed his mission in Sigil, and had been deposited in a southern Ghoul kingdom. He'd befriended a pelican and was making his way back to Olwynn. He was wearing a tabard and waving a pennant, both of which bore the likeness of the Lady of Pain.

He looked at Xiangmao and said, "Wow lady, you look terrible! Here, have a dretch steak! This magic plate keeps it warm!". He handed her the food. She began to eat it.

Ryltar had heard of dretches. They were foul, potbellied demons.

PaunchCrammer had a gift for Varis and the heroes. It was a glowing cube the size of a fist. "It's a Cube of Dimensional Vision. I stole it off a dead guy. If you look into it, you can see some kind of other dimension. Go ahead and try it! I saw one where I was skinny."

Varis looked into it, and saw a vision of himself in the city of Starbed fighting alongside the Grey Maidens (the elite soldiers from the city of Korvosa). When the battle was over, a grey maiden took off her helmet. Her face was scarred horribly. Varis also noticed that his alternate self had a bird familiar, rather than a skull.

Ryltar looked into it. He saw a vision of the city of Olwynn under drow rule. Ryltar was tied to a post and was being whipped by a drow priestess using a fang whip. Ryltar saw that his alternate self was wearing an eyepatch.

Ryltar said, "This is really horrible."

Scarlet looked in, and saw a vision of herself. She was wearing pink armor, and she had flowers in her hair. Aurora the unicorn-person was with her, and Varis was there handing her a bouquet. All three of them began skipping joyfully through a field.

"It's broken", Scarlet said. She tossed it back to Varis.

Hartaniel looked into it. He saw himself wearing a white shirt. He was standing in a sunny field. All of the Draedsmasher orcs were near, patting him on the back.

Varis was there too. He looked up at Hartaniel in admiration. His familiar was not a skull, but a cherub.

The cherub said in his baby voice, "Hey Hartaniel, let's go on another adventure! It will be fun and we'll wearn things about wife!"

Scarlet fluttered her eyes at him and said, "You're so handsome." She was wearing pink armor. On her breastplate was a heart.

Ryltar arrived on the scene holding a basket of puppies.

Hartaniel looked away from the cube. He said, "Wow Scarlet, you should wear this pink armor. It's kind of hot."

Scarlet growled, "That is terrible."

Hartaniel puffed his chest out a bit. He believed that the vision he saw in the cube was going to come to pass.

Scarlet asked to see one of the magic plates that were keeping the dretch steaks warm. PaunchCrammer handed one to her and told her to keep it. Scarlet smiled, thinking the magic plate could have value.

Xiangmao had no weapon. They handed her one of the three swords that the statues had been holding in the reliquary.

Once our heroes were done messing with the cube, they decided to go check out the wizard's tower.

The orcs were hunting for the heroes, so they took a long way around to get to the tower.

The wizard's tower brooded above the murky fog of Gardmore Abbey like a gray giant. The only sounds were the raucous calls of the ravens roosting on its' spire.

The tower doors leaned off their hinges, the old wood charred and splintered, yet also frosted with rime. Two dragon-headed statues stood to either side of the doorway, streaked with the droppings of the ravens.

Ryltar realized the the statues were actually alive! They were gargoyles! And their claws were bloody. But the gargoyles were standing almost perfectly still.

Xiangmao went in to the tower first.

The chill interior of the tower glowed with a flickering radiance. Faint tongues of fire glided along sections of the stone floor and walls, crossing paths with webs of silver lightning that sparked and vanished; puddles of water formed, then suddenly hardened into ice - which melted into stinking pools of acid.

The light of the shifting elements illuminated a large fallen obelisk at the center of the entry chamber. A bloodstained sheet covered the stone. The rounded shape beneath the sheath the sheet suggested it draped a large, recumbent humanoid form. Atop the covered body rested a rolled scroll.

Scattered about the room were the gory remains of at least a dozen orcs.

The heroes cautiously entered the room. They didn't know it, but certain areas of the room were infected with warped magic. They stepped into one such area, and it let off a massive explosion of cold energy.

The heroes took a moment to regain their senses. Varis studied the warp as best he could. They wondered what was under the sheet on the obelisk.

Scarlet used her ten foot pole to try and obtain the scroll without disturbing the thing it rested on. Unfortunately, her hands were not steady, and she poked the thing.

It turned out that under the tarp was the body of a ten foot tall flesh golem, topped with the head of a beautiful woman! The giant beast threw off the cloth, stood on the obelisk and roared in rage.

Xiangmao shrieked. The golem's head was the head of her fellow paladin, Elaida.

Hartaniel slashed at the golem's legs, sending it crashing off the obelisk and into a bookshelf.

Varis' card power kicked in. He used it to send a sheet of flame at the golem. The golem yelled in terror as it burned and got as far away from Varis as it could. The golem seemed to fear fire.

It ended up staggering into another area of warped magic. A warped magical explosion went off.

Scarlet approached the thing. It raised its' fists and pummeled her, knocking her unconscious.

Back beyond the door, the gargoyles sprung into action. Xiangmao blocked the door way, and battled both of them while the rest of the adventurers struggled against the golem.

Ryltar uttered a prayer to the Raven Queen and cut deep into the golem (a critical). Then he offered another prayer and healed Scarlet's wounds. The warrior came to and dragged herself onto the obelisk to give herself a moment to regain her bearings..

Varis circled the room and fired off spells at the golem. The boy stepped into another area of warped magic and was caught in a fiery explosion.

The golem struck Hartaniel as he ran over to Varis to pour a healing potion down his throat. Ryltar distracted the golem with a cloud of ravens, blinding the abomination. From within the cloud, Ryltar slashed into the golem with his scythe.

Varis staggered to his feet and saw that the golem hated fire. So he cast infernal blessing, a spell that transformed Hartaniel into burning skeleton. Hartaniel's blade was sheathed in eldritch flame!

Hartaniel charged and plunging his fire sword into the golem. The golem shrieked and flailed its' arms wildly.

Ryltar backed away and stepped right into another field of warped magic. His body was wracked with lightning. The lightning almost hit the golem, and the heroes could see that the lightning seemed like it would energize the golem somehow.

Varis hit the golem with a lure of minauros spell. The golem lunged in response, ready to go on a rampage, but Scarlet swatted it back. Hartaniel, as a burning skeleton, let out a war cry and cut the thing again with his fiery blade.

Ryltar cast a radiant shackles spell, which finally finished the golem.

The adventurers ran over to the doorway, where the bloodied Xiangmao was still battling both gargoyles. The heroes joined the fight and made quick work of the monsters.

It had been a fierce battle and they needed sleep. They decided to rest right in this room, warped magic and all.

Xiangmao said, "I wonder what happened to Vandomar. I can't believe this abomination was once beautiful Elaida."

"Looks like Vandomar is nuts now", Scarlet said.

They talked about whether the wizard's tower was safe to rest in. Xiangmao said, "The orcs are interested in this tower, and the watchtower to the south." She pointed out the door to a tower connected to the wall at the southernmost point of the abbey. "Lately, however, they've been obsessed with the watchtower."

Ryltar looked at the orc corpses, all slain by the golem and the gargoyles. They decided to go ahead and rest.

As they settled in and set a watch, they heard a loud crash come from the orc village. They looked out of the doorway, and saw a big red dragon swoop down out of the sky. It had gems encrusted in its' hide. The gems glowed and left trails of light behind it as it moved.

The dragon yelled something in a booming voice and breathed fire down on the orcs. Then, it flew off. The orcs screamed, panicked and tried to put out the fires.

The adventurers rested. The sun came up, and they were ready to go upstairs. At the top of the steps were doors that seemed to be frozen shut. Scarlet took out her crowbar and began chipping away. Then Hartaniel bashed the doors open...

A freezing gust swept over the stairs. Inside the room stood four long tables that held the frosty, mummified remains of four humanoids. Square blocks of ice lined the walls, each trapping the frozen form of some preserved creature.

A humanoid thing in white robes emblazoned with the draconic symbol of Io stooped over one of the tables. Its' withered face was pale blue, and dozens of tiny icicles hung from its' beard. Whenever it moved, its' body crackled as layers of frost broke and froze again. The creature looked up as the door opened.

"Visitors at last!" it said. It's words formed no steam in the bitter air. "Let us remember this moment forever.

Xiangmao asked, "Vandomar, is that you?"

The icy wizard looked at her curiously. "Do I know you?"

She looked around at the creatures frozen in the ice blocks. She shrieked as she recognized one of the creatures - Warren Alvis, a fellow paladin of Io. Xiangmao looked at the heroes and said, "We must free him!".

Vandomar laughed and asked, "Why would you do that?"

Scarlet muttered, "Oh, great..."

Vandomar smiled and said, "It's so nice to have visitors. You can stay as long as you like. Please, tell me what you've been up to."

Ryltar said, "You do realize the abbey has fallen to orcs and a dragon...?"

An icicle broke off and fell from the wizard's beard. "Really? A dragon? How exciting!"

Scarlet said, "Yes. A big, old, fire-breathing dragon." She put emphasis on the "fire-breathing" part.

They asked Vandomar if he'd like to leave.

"No, that's all right. I'm fine right here. I have quite a collection!"

"Why are you collecting?", Hartaniel asked.

Varis looked around and said, "I think it's nice in here. A bit cold for my tastes.."

Vandomar said, "Call me an eccentirc wizard if you must. They're going nowhere. I'll keep them forever. None of them are ever going anywhere."

Scarlet whispered to her allies, "Don't say that girl's name. Don't say it." He was referring to Elaida, who Vandomar had loved and then stuck her head on a flesh golem.

Ryltar said, "We're looking for cards."

Vandomar lit up. "Oh, like the one I have there in the far corner, in the block of ice?". Indeed, there was a card from the Deck of Many Things in the ice. It was the Ruin card. "It's magic, you know".

"We need it, actually..." Scarlet said.

Hartaniel smiled, looked at Varis and said, "We'll trade you the boy for the card."

Varis glared at him.

"Just joking."

From Varis' skull familiar came the cackle of evil YasnaBrinna.

Ryltar offered to trade Lady Andaisin's scythe for the card.

Vandomar said, "This card holds great magic. That is not a fair trade. I don't suppose you have any of these cards...?"

They bluffed. "No!"

"Ah. That's a shame. Mine is the card of Ruin. It makes men weak."

Hartaniel asked if Vandomar had talked to anyone with other cards. Vandomar said he hadn't talked to anyone in quite a while. They asked him how long it had been since he'd talked to someone.

Vandomar said, "Oh, a few weeks, I suppose. Not since...", suddenly, Vandomar began to remember. He bent over and held his head. He shouted, "No!" as a glimpse of his dead beloved flashed in his mind' eye.

Vandomar regained his composure and asked the heroes to stay, and to close the door. He began to chant and form the base of a new magical block of ice...

As Vandomar worked, the heroes whispered to each other. They needed the card.

Ryltar drew his scythe. He called out to Vandomar, "We need that card."

Vandomar turned toward them. "I'm sorry, you can't have it. You don't need anything any more. You're staying with me."

Scarlet said, "We need it to save the goddess Mari!"

Ryltar said, "You're sorry that you can't give it to us, and I'm sorry that we have to take it by force."

The heroes attacked!

Varis could sense his card from the deck playing off of the energy of the card in the ice. The other card activated, rather than his! A glowing image of Ruin appeared on the floor near the ice. Varis held his card and focused. He was able to channel his mastery of arcana, and activated his card. The ruin symbol faded away.

Scarlet charged Vandomar. Hartaniel joined her.

The four frozen mummies rose up and attacked the heroes. Vandomar struck Scarlet with his frozen staff, sending her hurtling ten feet back and freezing her feet where she stood.

Varis stepped onto the glowing symbol of his Flames card and used its' power, hitting three mummies with a huge gust of flame. The cards' power also scattered them about the room.

Hartaniel teleported away from Vandomar to aid his allies fighting the mummies. Vandomar cast a swirling blizzard spell, hitting four of the heroes with jagged ice. A mummy then struck Hartaniel and bloodied him.

Varis cast etherial stride, sending himself to a safer area of the room and launched off spells.

Ryltar and Scarlet paired off against a mummy, quickly injuring it. Varis finished it off with a spell.

Ryltar made his way to Vandomar and slashed at him with his scythe. Vandomar blocked the attack with his frost staff. Vandomar swung back, striking the drow. Ryltar flew across the room.

Varis focused his spells on Vandomar, bloodying him.

At the sight of his own blood, Vandomar suddenly seemed to realize what he'd become. In the ice blocks, the heroes saw images of Vandomar carrying his dead love back to the tower. Vandomar was overcome with grief and shame. He destroyed himself, and his mummies in a huge swirl of frozen frost.

The heroes quietly began chipping away at the small ice block. Scarlet laid claim to the Ruin card.

Our heroes were in Gardmore Abbey, where the cards of the Deck of Many Things had been scattered. They'd found the Ruin Card, and had returned to the garrison to rest for a bit.

As they ate and replaced their bandages, they took out the dimensional cube and peered into it, watching events play out in an alternate universe....

In this dimension, the drow attack on Olwynn was firmly rebuffed by the gods. And so our heroes were sent to another world in NyrodSpace where the drow had gained a foothold. It was the world of Reldain, home to jungles, the grandchild of Demogorgon... and the magical Isle of Dread (this is the world that the Savage Tide campaign took place on).

These heroes were helping the people of the city of Sasserine look for ways to defeat the drow. They'd heard about something on the Isle of Dread that could help - a powerful, magical obelisk.

These adventurers were reflections of our heroes in Gardmore Abbey. They were the same person, but also different.

Hairtanielle was an evil female vampire. And unlike her counterpart, Hartaniel, she had not been enslaved by orcs. She talked in a scratchy voice and wielded the soul-sucking sword, Blackrazor!

Ryltar was still a drow, but had been sent to live with friendly elves on his world. He never was forced to work with the evil drow necromancers, and had a sunnier disposition.

Shade Firestrife was the polar opposite of the unicorn-lady, Aurora Brightbolt. Shade was a nightmare-lady (a black horse/woman with fiery eyes and hooves and a low-cut top). She followed the Nightmare Code, which had only one tenet: "F*ck You."

The Red Monk was quite similar to The Blue Monk, except that he had fire-based powers. He was from the desert, and worshiped a strange fire god.

The Scarlet Crane looked like our Scarlet, but she was not a bandit. The Scarlet Crane donated most any money she attained and was quite generous.

Varis was never a slave of drow at all. His parents raised him. Instead of a skull familiar, he had a little fairy godmother who gave him compliments all the time. The Varis of this realm was a nice young boy.

Together, these adventurers rode a ship called The Shameful Plunderer. Captain Duncan B. Skullf*cker made sure the heroes reached the isle safely.

They had been contracted to protect an intrepid druid named Hyacinth. It was a little odd working for a dryad, but the pay was good, and she assured the heroes that their help was essential to the mission.

Hyacinth needed their help reaching a powerful obelisk in the jungle. She had said that she needed their protection while she performed a ritual at the obelisk, which would lay bare the secrets of the powerful transformation magic that the island's natives once used. The only hitch: The island was home to a host of terrible creatures, including dinosaurs and a tribe of orcs known as the Tyrantclaw.

Hyacinth had provided the heroes with a selection of resources:

- Two magic crossbow turrets that fired at enemies on their own
- One light ballista
- A few small crates

After an hour of carving a path through the dense jungle, they came to a clearing where the scattered ruins of Tanaroa laid. Nearby stood a 50 foot high wall built of stone blocks. The towers of the wall, along with the rest of the village, were long abandoned. In the center of the wall once stood a pair of massive gates, long since destroyed.

After they hauled their gear into the ruins of Tanaroa, Hyacinth was ready to begin the ritual. She explained that after she had begun to perform it, she would be entranced and vulnerable to attack.

Around them, the air was thick with humidity and the smell of plant life. Aside from the vegetation, all they could see was a few ruined huts and some pools of bubbling tar.

The heroes set up one magical turret on a 50 foot high battlement. The other was placed near the obelisk and Hyacinth. The light ballista was placed on the far side of the obelisk.

Nearby, Shade stacked one box on top of another. She climbed up and perched on them. From there, she could fire spells at her enemies, but her enemies would have a hard time reaching her.

Hyacinth placed herself before the black obelisk, which had a golden glyph on each face. There, she conjured vines to hold herself in place and began the ritual.

Nothing happened for a few minutes. The jungle was silent. Then, as she neared completion of the ritual, they saw shadows moving in the jungle, and they heard the crash of movement all around them. It was the orcs of the Tyrantclaw tribe!

The ground beneath them began to rumble and shake. "I need only a few more seconds," Hyacinth whispered in her entranced state. "Protect me."

(Lair Assaults are special mega-encounters that are supposed to be deadly. My job as DM is to try to kill the PCs. Their goal in this lair assault is to keep Hyacinth alive.)

12 orcs emerged from the jungle to the north! The orcs were ready to kill everyone. Ryltar summoned his hawk made of twigs and leaves. Shade fired off an elemental blast that killed two approaching orcs. Scarlet Crane fired off a ballista bolt, which sunk into an orc, bloodying it.

The orcs roared and charged. The Red Monk, Scarlet and Hartanielle took the brunt of the attack. The Monk killed one with a fire blast. Hairtenielle grabbed one, and plunged her fangs into the orc's neck. She greedily drank his blood as the orc withered and faded. It was dead in moments.

Hairtanielle shouted in her gravelly voice, "The left flank is clear!"

Varis cast a lightning spell that killed four more.

Scarlet Crane called out, "With our combined strength, we'll get through this! Good job, everyone!"

A magical turret fired a beam of yellow light that killed the bloodied orc. The heroes were ready to finish off the few remaining orcs.... when more enemies arrived from the east! It was an orc and three triceratopses!

Shade launched off firebolts at the approaching dinosaurs, and then used her magic to raise the ground beneath Hyacinth, stretching her vines and growing a column of stone beneath her. When the stone ceased ascending, the druid was standing on it 20 feet up, safely out of reach of the enemies. The druid remained in her trancelike state, drawing magic from the obelisk... the ground continued to rumble...

The dinosaurs charged under the command of a maul-wielding Tyrantclaw orc. One rumbled toward Ryltar and gored the drow. Another charged the stack of crates that Shade was perched on. Its' white horns shattered the boxes, causing Shade to fall to the ground behind them.

An orc ran over to the newly created pillar that Hyacinth stood upon. It grabbed a vine, intent on climbing up and killing Hyacinth! The Red Monk ran over and beat the orc to death before it could do so.

The Monk wondered why the orcs were so intent on killing Hyacinth. The obelisk apparently had great power, and the Tyrantclaws didn't want it to be disturbed. But the druid's ritual was almost complete! The heroes would find out its' magical effect soon enough...

Hairtanielle looked seductively at an orc and beckoned to it. The orc wasn't interested.

Varis fired off more lightning, striking and bloodying two triceratopses.

And then from the jungle to the west, came even more enemies! An orc spellcaster led three more dinosaurs - ankylosaurs, with huge spiked tails!

Varis continued to cast lightning spells. Under Ryltar's direction, the boy killed a triceratops.

Varis' little fairy sidekick said, "Wonderful! Wonderful shot! You're such a special little boy! You should thank your friend!"

Varis looked over to Ryltar and yelled, "Thank you, friend!".

Ryltar cheerfully called back, "You're so welcome, child of nature!"

Scarlet Crane said, "It is nice to work together, isn't it? It's good to give of yourself to others"

Hairtanielle rolled her eyes and said, "I only wanna help myself!"

Shade the nightmare-person was sickened by this discussion. She yelled out, "I hope you all get gored!"

Scarlet tsk-tsked, "That's hardly the spirit we're looking for!"

Shade muttered, "Maybe I'll just teleport away, come back later, and take all the magic items from your dead bodies."

Shade stood up, used a fallen box as cover, and launched off a fire bolt that killed another triceratops. She then turned and killed another.

An ankylosaur lumbered its' way toward Hairtanielle and struck her with its' spiked tail. Hairtanielle backed away, manned the ballista, and fired a bolt into the dinosaur.

And then even more villains arrived. Another orc spellcaster was accompanied by two orc reavers. And up in the sky were three more enemies - pterodactyls! Their hoarse cries betrayed their presence. While Hyacinth was safe from most of the enemies on the ground, she was a prime target for the pterodactyls!

Shade began launching fire spells at them while Ryltar turned invisible and directed her shots.

A pterodactyl swooped down and snatched up Varis in its' claws. It began to fly the boy toward a small tar pit.

An ankylosaur swatted The Red Monk, who was on the west side of the obelisk and isolated from his allies. He was battling an orc and two ankylosaurs alone. The new arrivals were close to him as well.

On the other side of the obelisk, Hairtanielle sucked the life out of another orc (two orc minions had somehow lasted four rounds into this battle!). Hairtanielle then turned into a screeching bat.

The ground began to rumble as Hyacinth opened her eyes: "I can't control it!" Her words were almost lost as the rumbling grew to an all-out earthquake. With a groan, the ground split open, revealing vast pools of boiling tar.

An explosion from the obelisk sent a wave of cold, white light outward, knocking everyone back. Hyacinth's body began to contort and expand - the stone pillar she'd been standing on crumbled utterly. The vines that held her in place split and fell away as she grew larger and larger, until standing before everyone was an enormous creature with razor-sharp teeth and powerfully large legs. It was a tyrannosaurus rex! It reared its' giant head high into the sky as it let out a bone-chilling roar.

(The objective of the lair assault had changed. Their mission was now to defeat the t.rex! They had to subdue it, not kill it. In addition, the sides of the map were now buried in massive tar pools)

The pterodactyl holding Varis was now above a massive tar pool. The dinosaur released the boy, who cast a quick spell in the air to give him the power of flight for a few seconds. He altered his course and flew to an "island" in the tar which held one of the ruined huts.

Shade was on the island as well. Her boxes floated in the tar, and were quickly burned and destroyed by it.

Hyacinth the tyrannosaurus rex did not seem to recognize her companions anymore. Apparently, the reason that the village of Tanaroa was ruined was because all of its' citizens had turned themselves into dinosaurs! And for some reason, they'd allied themselves with the Tyrantclaw orcs.

Hyacinth the Tyrannosaurus Rec was angry and driven by an innate urge to kill. The other dinosaurs trembled in fear of her. The orcs watched, and knew in time they could befriend her and so they took great care not to provoke her or harm her. The T. Rex lunged and bit Hairtanielle, giving the vampire a massive bloody wound.

A pterodactyl swooped down from the sky and snatched the Red Monk. It began to fly him toward the other massive tar pit on the western side of the obelisk.

The Red Monk singed its' claws, causing it to drop him. He plunged 20 feet, and landed on the ground with a thud. Blood trailed out of his head. The Red Monk would soon die. His friends would not make it over in time to save him.

Varis was in trouble on the island. The pterodactyl who had snatched him up once already did so again! Hairtanielle turned into a bat and flew up to help the poor boy. She flew above the pterodactyl, and then turned back into her humanoid form. She dropped down onto the dinosaur and struck it with a powerful blow, sending all three of them hurtling toward the tar pit.

Varis, with the aid of his little fairy creature, landed on the island. The pterodactyl and the vampire ended up in the tar (taking 10 fire and ongoing 10 fire, -5 to saves, save ends!).

The magical turret fired a beam into an ankylosaur, bloodying it. Already scared, the ankylosaur turned and ran, never to be seen again.

Shade took note of this, and bloodied another ankylosaur with a fire spell. It too ran into the jungle. Apparently, the sight of the t. rex and the scent of their own blood were a terrifying combination for the other dinosaurs.

Shade then turned and scorched the t. rex with fire (a critical for 43 points of damage). Hyacinth roared in pain and rage. She lashed out at Scarlet nearby, biting her twice. Scarlet fell to the ground, dying.

Ryltar uttered arcane words, and magically revived the Scarlet Crane. The t. rex cruelly bit down on her again. The runepriest was near death.

In the tar, Hairtanielle waded her way to the island. The pterodactyl let out a shriek. It flew off into the sky, never to be seen again.

Hairtanielle, Shade and Varis were all on the island in the tar. There was ten feet of tar separating them from the t.rex, the two orc spellcasters, and two orc reavers. All of the other dinosaurs had fled. Ryltar was on the shore just past the tar battling as best he could.

An orc spellcaster leered at the trio on the island. He cast a vengeful whirlwind spell, sending all three of them flying into the tar!

The tar again scorched Hairtanielle. She tried to struggle to her feet, but the pain was too great. She sank into the tar, dead.

Varis pulled himself onto the island and stumbled into the relative safety of the hut. He was able to brush the tar off before it burned him too badly.

The tar didn't hurt Shade at all. She was very resistant to fire (a nightmare-person is a re-flavored tiefling). She teleported up onto the roof of the hut, and she angrily started firing off fire spells at the tyrannosaurus rex. The beast roared as blood began to stream down its' hide.

Varis jumped over the tar and used a magic amulet to revive Scarlet. She struggled to her feet and struck the t.rex. The Tyrannosaurus snapped at her again and again, and dropped Scarlet one more time, for good.

The orc reavers were battling Ryltar. They hacked into him with their axes. Blood sprayed everywhere. The drow lost consciousness and was dying.

Shade covered them, killing a reaver with a fire spell as the orc spellcasters launched lightning bolts back at her.

Only Varis and Shade remained. Shade was on the hut. Varis was directly below the t. rex. The dinosaur reached its' head down and bit the boy. He fell down, likely dead.

Shade chanted one more spell. The fire exploded into the t. rex's legs. The mighty beast stumbled, hit its' head on the obelisk, and fell unconscious.

And then... the image in the dimensional cube faded out. It was not clear if Shade had survived, or if the orcs ran away (The store I ran this in had to close. We were out of time. But the Lair Assault objective had been completed!).

The heroes in Gardmore Abbey were rested. It was time for them to figure out where they wanted to search for more cards of The Deck of Many Things.

Meanwhile, on a far away world, Anjou Beurre had just stepped through a portal to Lolth's Demonweb Pits. She was determined to hunt down Lolth and kill her once and for all....

Saga of Valor
Book One - NyrodSpace War 3

Chapter Twenty: The Fane of Eclavdra

Anjou, Primal Spirit of Storms
Clarissa, Goddess of Fire & Battle
Kava Frosthowl, Primal Spirit of Ice
Reshkar, avatar of Io - Prime God of Dragons
Storm, God of War
Zev, God of Night

Far off in the sphere of GreatSpace, on the world of Thesalys, Anjou had jumped through Lolth's portal to the Demonweb. The other gods had headed into the spiral desert to free Yagnor, God of the Grevans.

Anjou appeared in a large room with web walls. She was standing on a web as well. Past the strands below her feet, she saw a black void punctuated with billowing clouds of vapor. The gas of the clouds held some kind of horrible infernal magic which could change her forever...

The avatar of Lolth saw that Anjou had followed her. She vanished. Three large spiders scampered toward Anjou, and from the void below came sporebats - eyes with bat wings attached - firing beams of concentrated poison at the primal spirit!

Lolth's magic kicked in, and the exits to the room were blocked by webbing walls which sprung up from out of nowhere. The webbing walls grew inward, slowly closing in on Anjou, as if the room was to become a cocoon designed to hold her in.

Anjou assumed her lightning form, and held the arrow of fate tightly in her hand. She drew energy from it, and breathed radiant fire on her enemies. The spiders squealed and died.

For hours and hours she fought, both against the bats as well as the encroaching cocoon. Sporebats continuously flew up from the outer demonweb and fired their poison rays. Anjou was struck a few times. Over the span of a few hours, the creatures were wearing her down.

But at last, her allies joined her. Zev had activated the portal, and the heroes passed through. Storm let out a Call to the Moon, killing some advancing sporebats. Clarissa channeled fire through her sword and began to scorch the encroaching webbing. Reshkar breathed fire on the webbing as well. Zev used his mastery of Arcana to shut down the spell that was creating the web cocoon. As the last of the bats were killed, Anjou was able to catch her breath.

There were multiple exits from the room. All were tunnels made of webbing.

Duskeater, Zev's imp, said, "Mighty Zev - we're really going to go and 'get' Lolth now? May I lay claim to the Demonweb when she is dead?"

"No," Anjou said.

Storm asked, "Don't you already have a kingdom?"

Duskeater said, "Yes but I have to share it with Graz'zt! Do you know what that's like?" (Zev, Kava and Clarissa had killed Doresain, the lord of the ghouls. Duskeater became the ruler of Doresain's White Kingdom, which is in Orcus' abyssal realm of Thanatos. Once those heroes killed Orcus, Graz'zt claimed Thanatos for his own)

Duskeater continued, "Graz'zt already has four or five abyssal layers. That nerd is lucky Zev doesn't destroy him."

Anjou sighed and took a few more minutes to patch up her wounds.

Clarissa looked at Zev and said, "So what do your new magic items do?"

She saw that he was wearing the circlet and holding the staff that he had snatched from Lolth's avatar while she was stunned.

Reshkar had just joined the heroes. As Io, he had been watching over Nyrodspace while the other gods dealt with Urgathoa. But he had sensed that the heroes would need his help, and tracked them down.

Reshkar said, "Magic items? Explain..."

Duskeater piped up, "Mighty Zev has two, but I took one. I asked him if he would hold it for me. I'll take it back later. I am a demon lord, after all."

Zev said to the other gods, "What do you know of this place?"

"Lolth is here and I'm going to beat her up," Anjou explained.

They knew that Lolth had ultimate power in this realm. She was a demon lord as well as a goddess.

Zev tried to use the godly power stored in the headband of Cerbel, who was a god of Prophecy. He wanted to find out which tunnel lead to Lolth. But as he tried to use the item, he saw in his mind an image of a giant spider with a drow head attached. It was Lolth! She hissed, and blocked his attempts with her godly might. The lich clutched his head in pain.

They decided to go through a tunnel that sloped down. As they examined the webbing that made up the tunnel, they saw howling faces of condemned souls form and un-form.

The tunnel lead to an empty chamber that contained an entire temple complete with pillars, an arched cathedral-style ceiling, and stained-glass windows depicting spiders and their prey. At the center of the room was an altar fitted with shackles and a catch basin for blood, lying underneath the fangs of an enormous spider sculpture of Lolth that hung from the ceiling.

They could feel a weird power emanating from the altar. Zev warned them that if they got too close, the altar had the power to control their minds.

Clarissa studied symbols that were on the floor. They depicted a bronze star, a silver sphere, and a blue cube, respectively. She sensed teleportation magic emanating from them. She felt that a certain key would be needed to activate them.

The gods would see these inlays in many chambers of the Demonweb. Because the Demonweb shifted so much, the simplest way to travel was to use a key on an inlay. If you activated a bronze star, you could travel to any room with a bronze star inlay if you'd been to it before and you had the bronze star key.

Unfortunately for the gods, they had no keys, and hadn't seen inlays anywhere else yet.

They avoided the altar, and followed a tunnel that ended abruptly at a wall - an illusory wall.

They began to talk about the gods and primordials they'd slain: Orcus, Tiamat, Pollidemia, Piranoth, and Timesius...

Clarissa said, "Zev's stolen many magic items from those gods we've slain...". Clarissa appeared to be irked by the fact that Zev had snatched two artifacts from Lolth while she was stunned, and kept them.

Duskeater said, "It's called 'looting', Clarissa."

Clarissa asked, "Is that the same as stealing?"

Duskeater shrugged and said, "I don't know. How much have you 'looted'..?"

"I haven't had to lower myself to that level."

"You've never looted anything? Let me look at you. Where did you get all those magic items?" Duskeater rolled his eyes and sighed. "It's so easy, you miserable bitch."

Duskeater laughed and yelled sarcastically, "Zev, protect me!". He flew into the lich's ribcage and drew his robes over so Clarissa didn't have line of sight. Duskeater cackled and called out to Clarissa, "I long ago surpassed you! I am now a demon lord!"

Past the illusory wall, they could see that space beyond had been expanded into a makeshift laboratory. Braziers in the corners burned with coals; long shelves held hundreds of books and scrolls. More tapestries covered the walls and held in the heat of the braziers.

One section of the chamber was lit by a metal candelabra that held hundreds of candles; their light shined on two people: a drow woman wearing gauzy spiderwebs and a black circlet set with shining red gems, and a tiefling man with shiny skin and a pointed tail. The two of them were unaware of the gods nearby, but their black cat had - it was perched on the table near them. It's three red eyes stared straight at them, unblinking.

Reshkar and Anjou stepped in. The three-eyed cat let out a deafening inhuman shriek.

The drow and tiefling turned. The drow pulled out a dagger, the tiefling brandished a hell rod. The drow asked, "What's the meaning of this?!"

Anjou said, "The meaning of this? We're here to kill Lolth."

The tiefling laughed. "Kill Lolth?!"

The female looked the pair over and asked, "Really..? Hmmm... I am Lissondra. And this is my lover: Bon Amedoss."

The cat looked at the gods with its' red eyes.

"I like the cat," Anjou said.

The cat let out another monstrous roar.

Reshkar asked, "Will you stand in our way, or let us pass?"

Lissondra thought and said, "We shall let you pass."

Zev hissed from behind the illusory wall, "I suggest you kill them before they do something they'd regret later."

Lissondra said, "We are just poor researchers..."

Zev corrected, "...servants of Lolth."

Lissondra continued, "...We are nothing to you."

Storm looked them over. He believed that she was no threat. Anjou noted that sometimes Lolth rewarded traitors. Zev had spotted a magic spidersilk garment hanging on a hook. He told the researchers that if they handed over the spidersilk, they'd let them live. The pair agreed to this.

Zev asked his cohorts, "Does anyone want to 'loot' those robes before I claim them?"

Clarissa took them. The spidersilk robes gave her the power to control spiders, and gave her the drow power of darkfire.

The heroes looked at the scroll that Bon and Lissondra had been working on. It was research on how to infuse demon blood into Lolth's spiders. Zev entered and took it. The cat let out another roar. Lissondra began to pet it.

They asked her where Lolth was. She explained that the Demonweb shifted constantly, and thus there was no one way to Lolth. But she did say that to get to Lolth, they'd have to pass through The Black Gate. "And nobody passes through the Black Gate unless they have the platinum key."

Zev asked, "Where is the platinum key?"

"It is held in the Fane of Eclavdra".

Storm seemed sure she was telling the truth.

Clarissa had heard of Eclavdra - Lolth's most powerful servant. Eclavdra betrayed Lolth at least twice and survived. She had also seduced Graz'zt for a time.

The gods left Lissondra and Bon. They headed down a tunnel, which led to weird fog. It was the abyssal gas that they'd all had a horrible feeling about.

Duskeater said, "Clarissa, why don't you go investigate the fog?"

Clarissa responded, "You're undead, you don't need to breathe. You go."

Duskeater paused, for once having nothing to say. The gods laughed.

Zev said, "You have failed this day, Duskeater."

They backtracked through Lissondra's chamber. The cat roared at them again. They went down a different tunnel, which ended in a set of iron double doors.

The strong doors bore no markings. Reshkar tried to pull them open, but they wouldn't budge. Zev studied them, and realized they could be opened with a magic key.

Storm saw another way as well. They'd have to sacrifice a sentient creature and use its' blood to paint the symbol of Lolth on the door.

They headed back to Lissondra's again, and went through yet another tunnel. They came upon another set of double doors. But these were not iron and were easily opened...

The room beyond seemed to belong to a plane of fire and brimstone: the air reeked of rotting meat, and puffs of sulfurous smoke obscured the chamber. Striding out of the smoke were tall, skeletal demons with bony white vestigial wings. Their entire bodies were sheathed in blue fire.

A giant, fiery spider rose out of a central magma pool. Storm ran up and slashed it. His cut created a fiery explosion that singed Storm's fur. Anjou made her way in and launched out three lightning lures, dragging two of the burning palrethee demons and the spider close to her.

Kava charged the spider and bloodied it with a blow from her icy axe. Clarissa and Reshkar each engaged lone Palrethee demons.

Zev suddenly shimmered with arcane energy. He fired off a weak eldritch blast which barely reached or affected a demon. He called out that Lolth was somehow disrupting his spells!

Storm let out a call to the moon, injuring many. Then he teleported next to the spider and plunged his blade into it. The spider squealed and died (he rolled a critical).

Two palrethees clawed Kava. The demons spoke to each other in abyssal. Zev understood the language, and learned that the palrethee had a contract with Lolth - they would guard the place unless the battle was certain to be lost. Then, they were allowed to flee through a portal in the magma pool, which would take them to their home layer known as the Bloodpyre Fields.

Zev knew that the Bloodpyre Fields were ruled by a fiery demon lord called Flauros. Flauros fought with an entity called Ymeri, mistress of fire, over control of the race of salamanders.

Zev had heard of some drow who worshiped Flauros - House Caldrana.

Zev again tried to cast a spell, but again he shimmered and glowed instead. His spell was ineffective.

Storm tore into another palrethee (2 criticals). The palrethee called out to each other that they were now contractually allowed to flee into the gate. The gods stepped back, and let them do so.

As the heroes rested, Zev made a ritual circle using the power of the staff of Mordrun, one of the two artifacts he'd taken from Lolth. The staff allowed him to cast a ritual instantaneously.

After an argument with Duskeater about "marking your territory", they headed down another web tunnel. They came to a black hemispherical room, which was a junction of several passages, and its' floor was polished black marble marked with silver lines and shapes. Two sections of the wall were covered with silver-and-iron scrollwork that resembled webbing; these two met at the center of the room overhead. The floor wriggled slightly underfoot.

Clarissa, Storm and Zev studied the floor, and Storm realized that the floor was a giant map of the Demonweb! They took a moment to figure out where they'd been.

They then made their way down a tunnel, which was heavily webbed. As they traveled, the space opened up a bit. Suddenly, the web shivered and shook. Tearing through the web from above came three huge, abyssal spiders!

A spider dropped down on Reshkar and bit the dragonborn. Poison coursed through his veins. Storm cut off its' head. Poison blood sprayed up like a geyser.

"I thank you, God of War", Reshkar said.

Another spider shot webbing at Zev. He teleported out of the way. Clarissa plunged her khopesh into the spider's back and created a fire explosion inside it, blowing it up.

The third spider dropped in front of Anjou. She slammed the butt of the arrow of fate on the ground, letting out a wave of thunder that sent the spider flying. Kava turned it to ice and then shattered it with a blow from her axe.

They continued onward. The passage ahead seemed to have been torn apart by powerful forces - it looked crumpled and in sections, and the floor was uneven, with cracks that let a breeze through. The gods realized that the corridor ahead was an intersection, and that part of the ceiling was missing. They saw webs, hundreds of them, in all directions above them.

Suddenly, sporebats burst through the ceiling! Debris fell down - there looked to be something in the nest above them.

Reshkar breathed fire, killing two sporebats. Storm was hit with a poison beam. Anjou breathed radiant dragon breath, killing two more. Three remained.

Clarissa called forth a wave of arcane energy, killing two more. The last one shot a poison ray, hitting Kava and Zev.

Reshkar ran over and skewered the last of the sporebats.

The gods checked out the upper area the bats had come from. They found piles of seeds, as well as a little statuette of a red tree.

Clarissa studied the statuette, and realized it was a magic key that might work on an iron door, such as the one they could have opened by making a symbol with Lolth's blood.

They looked at the seeds. They realized that they could grow sporebats with the seeds.

Zev grabbed a handful in his bony grip. Storm decided he didn't like the idea of the god of night growing sporebats, and let out a call to the moon to try to shatter them. The god of night quickly stuffed them in his robes before they could be destroyed.

Duskeater said, "Working against us? Aren't we a team?"

Storm said sarcastically, "Oh, there's no reason for me not to trust Zev."

Duskeater explained, "Zev is the god of night-time! That's 12 hours of Zev, and 12 hours for the rest of you to split. We're carrying the load here!"

Storm said, "War continues constantly, you stupid little thing."

"You can choose whether or not to make war, but night is coming either way, kitty cat! Ha ha haa!". Duskeater saw the stern look on Storm's face and added, "I am just joking with you, Storm. You are mighty indeed."

Storm looked at Zev and said, "I am dangerously close to decapitating your imp."

Zev said, "You are letting a lowly imp anger a god?"

With the concern of the gods growing over Zev's machinations, they consulted their map and discussed which direction to try next. They followed a web tunnel for a bit. Up ahead, it curved, and in the curve was a cave shrouded in magical deeper darkness.

A huge spider skittered across the ceiling toward the heroes and dropped down on them. Reshkar cleaved it in half with his axe.

Clarissa chanted and dispelled the deeper darkness. They searched a debris pile in the cave, and found a small silver cube. It was another magic key designed to use with one of the mysterious sets of iron double doors found throughout the demonweb.

They moved on, and came to a wider section of webbed hallway... The air smelled slightly acidic, and the tunnel was about 50 feet wide. There were bones, hundreds of them, all chewed at the ends with the marrow sucked out of every one. Tufts of hair lay everywhere among the bones.

On a raised platform were three inlays: An iron pyramid, a bronze star, and a blue cube. Unfortunately, while the gods had found keys for the various iron doors, they had yet to find a key for any of the inlays.

There was also a shimmering bulb of energy, which was a portal to the extra-planar city of Sigil. As divine beings, the heroes were unable to pass through the portal, which was one of the unique things about Sigil. Neither gods, nor demon lords nor primordials could go there.

Kava looked around in the bone pile and found an ornate dwarven beard ring (worth 5 astral diamonds).

They followed another tunnel in the vast and seemingly endless demonweb. The gods arrived at an expansive natural cavern that apparently served as a major anchor for the Demonweb. Below an intricately-carved basillica roof stood a three-towered obsidian-carved citadel surrounded by a web-filled chasm. The highest tower reached three stories and was surmounted by an open turret.

As they took in the sight of the massive complex, Zev shimmered with arcane energy. Anjou and Kava turned and looked at Zev. They asked him what he was doing.

Zev said, "This place is interfering with my powers..."

Anjou looked at Zev and thought for a moment. She wasn't sure what was going on with him.

In the web-moat, they saw a massive horde of spiders - at least 10,000 of them!

Reshkar said dramatically, "Looks like we found - The Fane of Eclavdra."

There were four crossbow-wielding guards on top of the northeastern-most tower, known as the patrol tower.

Reshkar flew forward and got their attention. He hailed the drow. One guard called out in common: "Name your purpose for approaching Eclavdra's fane!"

Reshkar said, "I wish to convene with your lady."

The guard warned, "Stop where you are." The drow talked amongst themselves for a moment. Then, one headed down steps into the bowels of the tower.

Another guard called to Reshkar, "What's the password?".

"I am new to this realm. I don't know your password."

Kava whispered a suggestion: "spider". She was actually pretty close.

Reshkar called up, "I want no violence. I merely wish to speak with the lady of your keep."

A new drow emerged from the steps and looked down from the top of the tower to Reshkar. He was Artoresz Eilservs, a high-ranking drow archer.

Artoresz shouted down: "You wish to speak with Eclavdra? Yet you do not know the password." The heroes began to wonder if the drow were simply stalling while the many drow archers inside the complex positioned themselves at the dozens of arrow slits.

Reshkar called up, "I wish to speak with her about a possible alliance. Perhaps I should introduce myself. I am Io - God of Dragons!". Then, the dragonborn shifted and transformed into a massive, multi-colored dragon. He was Io indeed!

Artoresz shouted out orders in drow. There was great activity from inside the fane. Then the drow archer snarled and shouted down to Io/Reshkar, "Io is a friend of Corellon and thus, an enemy of the drow!".

One drow called out an arcane phrase: "Akh Orbb!". Suddenly, the 10,000 spider swarm washed up and out of the moat like a tidal wave (there were 100 spiders per square, and it filled 100 squares!).

Storm teleported into their midst and began swinging his blade in wide arcs. Droplets of spider blood flew into the air and fell like rain. Kava waded in near him and slashed away with her icy axe. Clarissa joined her, wielding her fiery khopesh.

The spiders covered the lower half of the god of war's body and bit him all over, their poison seeping into his veins (they critted him for 60 damage and ongoing 15).

Reshkar flew down into the swarm and breathed fire on it.

As the spiders crawled over Zev's body, the lich activated the godly power of his headband of Cerbel. He tried to take over the hive mind of the swarm! But Lolth, from elsewhere in the demonweb, sensed his attempt, and blocked it with her own divine will. Zev held his head and screamed as the feedback wracked his bones. He could feel her peering into his soul...

Anjou, in the middle of the swarm, let out a clap of thunder that dragged a few thousand spiders right next to her, to create space for her friends.

The spiders were all over Storm! He could feel them trying to crawl into his mouth. He sensed that these spiders had the power to take over and control his body!

Storm created a swirling dome of necrotic and radiant energy, that expanded out from inside his body, passing through his skin harmlessly but disintegrating all spiders that it touched! It grew out in all directions 15 feet. He struggled to maintain it (He used a level 26 punisher of the gods power called repel legions. It's technically not an aura, but rather a burst 3 that becomes a zone).

Zev held out his hand, using his mastery of arcana to make the dome larger! Hundreds more spiders disintegrated.

Anjou drew on the power of her gauntlet to help as well, but Lolth blocked it through sheer force of will!

Kava clenched her fist and activated her ring of winter, and pointed it at the dome. The glittering ring of unmelting ice began to shine. The aura took on a bluish tint and grew out further, freezing the spiders just before they were shattered by radiance and necrotic energy!

The dome was expanding and annihilating the spiders from the center of the swarm, as if a huge explosion had gone off in their midst!

Rehskar, an avatar of Io the god of dragons, used his divine energy to cause the dome to expand even more! He felt Lolth try to block it, but Io's will was too great.

In his head, he heard Lolth's shrill cry: "Io!"

Clarissa held out her khopesh and infused the dome with stunning fire. The dome grew out and up, destroying all of the 10,000 spiders. Then, the dome hit the walls of the fane itself, causing it to shake. The drow from within let out cries of fear as dust showered down from the ceiling. The whole place threatened to collapse!

Storm, the center of this maelstrom of radiance, necrotic energy, fire and ice, teleported up to the top of the patrol tower. His aura was so great that it blew the four guards with crossbows right off the top. The plunged into the web moat below.

Their leader, Artoresz, was pushed back near the edge, but he did not fall. The drow's hair blew back from the force of the energy. He raised his bow and fired an arrow into Storm's thigh.

Anjou teleported up to the tower, to aid Storm.

Clarissa climbed on her manticore and flew toward the fane, trying to extend the webbing drawbridge. Io and Kava helped. The bridge was difficult. A drow archer boldly tried to fire at Clarissa through an arrow slit. Clarissa used a lightning lure to pull the guard through the stone wall, killing him!

This created a hole for the heroes to enter the patrol tower.

Anjou called on the power of her gauntlet to summon an army of 5,000 faar'maki - the grevan spirit warriors! The drawbridge was lowered and they stormed the fane.

Kava killed the drow in the main level of the patrol tower, and then chanted, becoming ghostly. This allowed her to pass through the doors and to enter the nearby priestess tower. Reshkar followed, bashing the doors open. A swarm of Faar'maki came with him.

The priestesses were wielding fang whips, and some others had master tentacle rods. These elaborate weapons called forth 7 tentacles of different colors, and they had the power to blind, deafen, and make you numb and mute!

But even these weapons were no match for the gods. Reshkar and Kava tore into the drow.

Back up on the patrol tower, Artoresz was proving to be a worthy adversary. Clarissa flew up on her manticore and plunged her blade into the drow archer, stunning him. Anjou then stabbed him with the arrow of fate. Artoresz was slain.

The gods led the faar'maki assault. The 99 drow had no chance. Soon, the drow were all dead.

The gods explored the fane while the faar'maki camped. They found many portal keys on the drow. The keys worked on the bronze star, blue crystal and silver sphere inlays found throughout the demon web.

They also found a platinum key, which Lissondra had told them would open the black gate. The key however, was intangible. The gods quickly figured out how to make it tangible through the use of a strange double-ringed ritual circle in the fane.

They were dismayed to find the Eclavdra herself was not in the fane. They talked about what to do next - some wished to rest, others wished to resume the assault on the Demonweb post-haste.
