5e questions regarding Rate of Fire

You may find that in 5E there are fewer power-ups for specific niche builds. This was a design decision, and part of the goal of not being required to be a grognard to build effective characters.
As always you try spinning a weakness into a strength.

The fact remains that 5E just like any edition has a few good weapon choices, with the rest just being worse.

The "design decision" to not let characters use whatever weaponry they feel is cool and still get about the same damage output is not a good thing.

For example, you will never be able to spin the fact Crossbow Expert makes the hand crossbow a much better choice than the Light or Heavy into something else than an incomprehensible disaster.

Hopefully your DM will realize there's no reason not to let you fluff your 1d6+DEX ranged damage attack into whatever weapon form you want... especially if you even say you'd be willing to stick with the sling's range rather than ask for the shortbow's.
This.

(This is what the designers should have realized, so your DM don't have to.)

Actually Crossbow Expert doesn't, unless you've got literally nothing else to do with your Bonus action.

Seems reasonable to me. People often underestimate the damage a proper sling shot did historically. There were reasons why armies had companies of slingers and companies of bowmen. Both served their purpose.

I think that they had that, as slings were dirt cheap and rocks could be found everywhere.

Bows and arrows were expensive and required dedicated craftsmen for it.

Same reason axes and clubs were most prominent weapons in warfare as they were a lot cheaper, easier and faster to produce than a sword.

Until late middle ages having a sword was a status symbol.

Actually they were more prominent largely because they were better.
Swords were more common for self-defence.

Slings - how about stones do 1d4, lead bullets do 1d6? That'd make it equivalent to a shortbow.
30 years later.
Mr S'mon did you invade the Sunless Citadel in the year 1492. During your invasion in Room 18 brutally attack Gary Goblin with a lead bullet fired from your sling doing 6 pts of damage. And after he surrender, you tied him up. Did you then rob him, take his loot, and write loser on his forehead.
S'mon.
Good. You are being sued for willful lead poisoning.
