As Toby and Kyrrie entered the alley, they got a better look at the barricade. It stood about 10 feet to the side of the door, was about 10 feet high, and neatly filled the width of they alley, nearly 15 feet. It was well-constructed of wood, but it obviously hadn't been made in the short time since their arrival at the inn. Which suggested it was collapsible, but the mechanism wasn't obvious.
So unless one intended to try to climb over, break it down, or squeeze past, the only evident direction to retreat was to the right--and back in the direction of the front door.
"H-hey!" said the thug as Toby darted past her. She twisted awkwardly to follow him, leaving herself open.
The massive, vicious dog was nearly as tall as Toby. It snarled at Kyrrie as he approached, then yelped as he shoved it off-balance. The yelp was abruptly cut off as he plunged his sword between its ribs.
Now that the door was open, it became increasingly obvious that the odd thumping noise was not fireworks. It was more akin to ripe fruit dropping onto a rooftop. But much louder. And growing louder still.
Thump Thump Thump
[sblock=OoC]The next attack roll against the thug before Toby's next turn has advantage thanks to his help.
The mastiff rolls 8 on its Dex (Acrobatics) check and is knocked prone. Kyrrie's attack has advantage, but it doesn't matter because that attack and damage roll are enough to hit and kill it.
The mastiff is dead.
Anyone who hasn't can still roll initiative. If you beat 7, you can act before the enemies.
