Armor Spikes in Grapple

First Post
Do armor spikes require a successful grapple attack to damage an enemy? Or Do they auto damage when a character is grappled?

Can armor spikes be placed on non-armor? For example placed on a robe? How about light armor (padded or leather)?

Thanks for the help

"You can have spikes added to your armor, which allow you to deal extra piercing damage (see Table: Weapons) on a successful grapple attack. "

That means when you make a successful grapple attack. They are also martial weapons.

Skip says in RotG: "Weapons such as the spiked gauntlet or armor spikes are ready for use whenever you have a free hand, and you don't need to drop them to use your hand for something else."

They can be added to armor, so cloth, as in padded armor would be fine, but robes are not armor.
