OD&D Basic Weapon Houserule

I was scanning through my excellent print-on-demand copy of the Rules Cyclopedia, and began reading the rules for weapon mastery. Interesting stuff. Kind of fiddly.

Here is my alternate houserule:

Weapon skill levels are Basic, Skilled, Expert, Master, and Grand Master.

Fighters, Elves, Dwarves, and Halflings get basic skill in every weapon type, the other classes get basic skill in the allowed weapons for their class. Fighters, Elves, Dwarves, and Halflings can advance their skill level in one type of weapon at level three and every third level afterward. Other classes advance their skill level in one allowed weapon type at level 5 and every fifth level after.

Basic skill in a weapon does d6 damage, regardless of which weapon is used (as in Moldvay and Mentzer Basic rules).

Skilled level does d8, Expert does d10, Master does d12, and Grand Master does d20.

Training costs and time requirements are suggested, as in the RC.

Regardless of skill level, if a weapon is two-handed melee, or a crossbow, then roll the damage die twice, and use the higher value.
