Bloodlines

in reading about bloodlines at www.d20srd.org I've been confused.

It clearly says: "Class levels of "bloodline" do not increase a character's character level the way a normal class level does, but they do provide certain benefits (see below)."

If the characters character level doesn't increase all you need is 1 XP and magically go level up again, since XP requirements are based on character level.

Do you loose the XP between your current level and your new when you gan a bloodline?

This is from the Unearthed Arcana system and not from the Official SRD.

This is what your source says:

A bloodline level grants no increase in base attack bonus or base save bonuses, no hit points or skill points, and no class features. It counts as a normal class level (with no class skills) for the purpose of determining maximum skill ranks. Levels of bloodline never result in XP penalties for multiclass characters.

Include the character's bloodline level when calculating any character ability based on his class levels (such as caster level for spellcasting characters, or save DCs for characters with special abilities whose DCs are based on class level). The character doesn't gain any abilities, spells known, or spells per day from the addition of his bloodline levels, though—only the calculations of his level-based abilities are affected.

You must read the entire entry. "It counts as a normal class level . . . "

Hence it is treated like a class level as far as character level goes but it has some restrictions (e.g., to BAB progress, no saving throw progression and no skill points). It is a means of leveling out the benefits a character gets by having a bloodline (which are based on character level). Those are listed in the subsequent tables and are automatically gained with character level.

Think of it as multiclassing into racial HD and gaining a LA, which also doesn't count as a character level. So, for example, a 3rd level character with 1 level of bloodline has a character level of 3, but has the equivalent XP of a 4th level character. Similarly, a creature with a HD 0 and LA +1 (ECL 1) and 3 levels of fighter would also have XP similar to a 4th level character, but only 3 character levels.
