ZEITGEIST BSI: Bosum Strand Irregulars

The constables removed James from his shipping box and immediately starting asking him questions about where he had been and what had happened to him. He said he could recall being held in a room, being asked questions, and being asked to contribute healing infusions to help the injured, but not much else beyond that. He said he was having memory issues, and asked to be caught up on how the investigation was going. Cazara took the lead there, explaining what had happened since James had been taken, and how the constables planned to take Nevard to Cauldron Hill in a matter of hours. The constables gathered gear and made for the Nettles.

With guards stationed on all the roads and paths up Cauldron Hill, the constables had to make their own way through the underbrush. The climb was exhausting, and the bitter cold of Cauldron Hill – even in Summer – ground down the endurance of all but Ironpeak, who seemed quite at home on the mountain. Finally they reached the top, where there were two flat areas with scattered menhir. Most of the stones had fallen, but a number of them were still arranged in a convenient circle on one of the plateaus. Nevard said he like the look of that place the best, and the group headed there to make a camp while Nevard looked skyward for signs of the future.

Ad Nevard was studying the sky, a spectral red curtain appeared atop one of the menhir. The curtain opened and Nilasa stepped out, warning the group that her murderer – a man made of shadow – was approaching.

It wasn’t long before the spooks of Cauldron Hill made their presence known. Ironpeak saw them first: various ghosts and otherworldly figures slowly drifting toward the fires the group had built for warmth. Then she spotted the dark shape on the far rise. A man seemingly made of shadow. He could be none other than Detective Roger Porter. The shadowy figure activated a sunrod and hurled it toward the group, drawing the attention of the crowd of strange beings on the mountaintop. Ironpeak batted it out of the air and over the mountainside, but Porter sent other lights toward the group and soon they could not hold back the tide of strange spirits and beasts.

Nevard only needed a few minutes to finish his visions, and the constables held out as best they could. Malkie ended up in an awkward position with a hag who kept vomiting worms down the vampire’s throat. Ironpeak fought a snake-maned lion and an incarnation of death itself. Mort protected the skyseer until finally Nevard said he’d seen enough and was ready to go. With his borrowed vigor, Nevard managed to lead the escape from the mountain while Malkie fumbled about with a sunrod to no effect.

Most of the group was running and/or tumbling back down the mountain, and most of the dangerous creatures had been destroyed, but Ironpeak was locked into a duel with Death. Neither would back down and the two matched each other swing for swing, parry for parry. Ironpeak finally summoned up some primal energy and rooted the apparition to the ground. It responded with a wicked slash of its scythe that dropped the goliath. The victory was short-lived, however, as Ironpeak’s primal spell destroyed the apparition a moment later.

Cazara leapt back up the mountain to revive Ironpeak and help her make the decent off the horrible peak of Cauldron Hill. The night was far from over, however: Nevard and those who took part in the Bond of Forced Fate ritual had seen an urgent vision. Heward’s Alkahest factory was the next target of the arsonists in Parity Lake, and the factory would burn before sunrise.

As they descended the mountain and made their way to Heward’s factory, Nevard shared his visions with the group:

“I saw a dark figure, standing atop Cauldron Hill, towering over our city.
The sun set, and he cast a shadow across Parity Lake, stretching northwest,
into the sea, beyond the horizon. He is born in our city, but his ultimate goal
is elsewhere. And also things moved in his shadow—indeed, his shadow
moved before he did, for while he was mighty, he was controlled by others.

“I saw smoke hiding his face, for he was made mighty by industry. In
my vision, a king chased him out to sea and defeated him by slicing him
free from his shadow. But the cauldron had already shattered, and many
thousands were drowned and devoured in its roil.

“I saw three birds alight on the peak, the first of black silk, the second
of black steel, both weeping blood. But the third was made of stars, and
it sang many songs.

“I tell you this: Cauldron Hill is not safe. Twice will danger arise, and
twice will we be deceived into thinking it is safe to return, but we must
avoid the place and avoid being tricked. I will arranged shelter in the
Cloudwood, where people can be safe until the darkness passes.”

Nevard also saw other visions, but he’s less certain what these mean, so
he did not plan to tell them to the public:

A woman sat on a leather couch in a waiting room, surrounded by
red curtains. She held a gold coin and rolled it across the back of her
fingers. A pick lay against the side of the couch. He asked her what she
was waiting for, and she answered in a language he didn’t know, saying,
“The place I’m going isn’t here yet.”

A trumpeter carried a lantern onto the stage of a darkened theater, and
the people gathered for his performance applauded, then lit lanterns of
their own. The theater never got bright enough for him to see their faces.

One man tore himself in two, and his twin selves fought over a woman,
tearing her into three, who ran away. Mice skittered around them, collecting
cheese fallen amid the rails of a trainyard. Then a train roared down the
track past him, but it had no one driving it. In the distance it derailed, and
crushed two of the women, but which of the three survived?

A man carrying a bronze staff with three keyholes is assailed by
swords and arrows and fire, but nothing kills him. He began to take off
his robes, revealing tiger fur beneath them, while stars fell from the sky
all around him. Then the sky was dark, and when the sun should have
risen, instead a pale glowing cloud floated in the dark.

Finally, tyrant and murderer languished in prison, hanging from
twelve chains and hooks that pierced her feet, her legs, her thighs, her
shoulders, her arms, and her hands. But the thirteenth hook that sealed
her mouth swung loose, and it fluttered in the breeze as she whispered a
map that led everywhere.

The constables arrived at Heward’s factory in time to prevent a pair of dragonborn brothers from lighting the place on fire. One of the brothers, Valando, died in the fight, caught unawares by Mort’s pistol shot. The other brother, Eberardo, was arrested and taken back to RHC headquarters. There was minimal property damage from one of Valando’s spells, which ignited some accelerants planted on the roof. Cazara toppled the factory’s water tower to put out the fire while Mort made sure to evacuate any employees.

Nevard parted ways with the constables, but not before informing them that he was already planning a gathering for the following day, where he would share his main vision with the public, and let them know about the evacuation arrangements in the Cloudwood. The gathering would be at Dawn Square, an open space in Bosum Strand that could hold up to 10,000 people.

As it was around 5:00 in the morning by the time the constables finished their day, which had begun before noon, Delft once again told them to head home and get some rest. Other constables would handle the interrogation of Eberardo. The constables were so tired that each of them slept the entire day away, not rising again until sunset. Mort dealt with Danoran affairs at the consulate. James checked up on his tavern. Malkie had a snack and then went to work for her “other job.” Ironpeak and Cazara followed up on a loose end.

The next morning, James sent a message by courier to all the others, saying that he believed that Roger Porter was planning an appearance at Nevard’s rally. He asked the investigators to meet him at Dawn Square as soon as possible to investigate. The group gathered, but there was a new face. Cazara and Ironpeak introduced a skyseer who would be joining the investigation: Yoku had been freshly deputized that morning.

The group did not go through MacBannin, so they all had the Curse of Cauldron Hill. It's why I kept them all asleep until sunset.

James, Malkie, and Mort have had two extended rests since leaving Cauldron Hill. James shook off the curse before he even knew it existed. Malkie is at Stage I. Mort has already progressed to Stage III. He hasn't been in a fight yet, but has noticed the darkvision. He has told no one of this phenomenon.

Cazara and Ironpeak have each only had one rest. Cazara is still at Stage I (and will shake it on her next rest, as I accidentally rolled early for her). Ironpeak has progressed to Stage II. She and Cazara are trying to figure out what the source of her darkvision is. So far, the fact that Ironpeak went unconscious while fighting an apparition of death on Cauldron Hill has them investigating a Bleak Gate connection.

Cazara and Ironpeak met with Gale while the others were busy. Cazara handed over the Vekeshi mirror, and the two of them advised Gale to keep a low profile and maybe not to resort to so much violence.

We have a new player, who is playing a female Eladrin Skyseer Wild Magic Sorcerer. She is young, only about 30 years old, and existed at the time of the Great Malice, but coincidentally took a strange jaunt to another plane and missed the big extinction event. Her Narnia experience kept her away for 500 years and now she's returned to an unrecognizable world. Should be fun! :)

The constables met in Dawn Square on the morning of Nevard’s planned rally. James had gathered the team, suspicious that Roger Porter had something planned for the big event. A newly deputized constable skyseer named “Summer” joined the crew. In order to quickly hire Summer, Delft had invoked a very old clause in the RHC charter, which technically requires a skyseer to be a member of every squad, and further requires that a certain minimum number of skyseers to be on payroll at any given time. Summer presented as an Elf, but she was actually an Eladrin named Yoku traveling in disguise, a fact known to only some of her fellow constables.

The group did some cursory introductions and then got down to business. Both James and Malkie had been out in the Strand the previous night and had talked to people who had similar disturbing stories to tell about an uneasy feeling around Dawn Square, and the smell of burnt oil. It seemed that Roger Porter and friends were up to something nearby, and it probably related to the rally happening at mid-day.

Nevard was at the site already, meditating in his tent. He took a break to meet with the constables, thanking them for all their help. He then asked each of them in turn to tell him about their personal vision of the future. Summer only said it was something different from what she had expected. James talked of the unification of man and technology. Malkie told of a time when she would rule over the entire world. Mort would talk of nothing but the expiration of the sun and the icy end of the earth. Cazara’s vision was one word: “justice.” Ironpeak said something vague about everyone being hosed. Nevard tried to syncretize all of these visions into one: an icy future with mechanical men of justice running the world, while ruled over by Malkie. And something about hosing. It was all very different from what one would expect, he said with a smile, before sending the constables away.

There were still several hours before the event, so the team went into investigation mode.Cazara picked up the scent right away, tracking it to a warehouse two blocks away from Dawn Square. Malkie recognized the place as a munitions warehouse which normally had a large contingent of military guards posted. This morning, there were no guards present. Cazara had a listen at the door. Inside she heard irregular mechanical sounds and several voices. Mort went to check around the back of the warehouse while Ironpeak boosted Cazara up to a window twenty feet above the street to have a look inside. Mort found the back doors had been blocked by pallets and barrels in an effort to either conceal them or simply prevent use. He began clearing a path so he could make a stealthy entrance into the back of the building.

At her window, Cazara saw the source of the noises she had heard: eight men in lab coats and a large steam-powered golem which seemed infused with the power of the Bleak Gate. They were at the back of the warehouse, seemingly cleaning up after a ritual. Their workshop was inside an area surrounded by chain-link fencing. Inside were several cages and a ten-foot wide circle of rusted iron, inside of which was a hazy distortion. She relayed this information to the others. Malkie tried to climb the bricks, but could not make any headway, so Cazara dropped down a rope for her. After the vampire made her way up, Cazara moved to another window. They both waited for Ironpeak to make her entrance.

The big Goliath borrowed James’s musket and pounded on the front door. “Hello?” she shouted, “reporting for guard duty!” There was no response from within and the door was locked. She was about to kick the door down when James intervened. He picked the lock so they could enter more quietly. Ironpeak opened the door, and an alarm began to blare. She gave James his gun back and rushed inside, hacking her way through the chain-link cage that had been set up around the entrance.

Mort snuck in the back way and lurked in a pile of crates while he waited for the scene to develop. Cazara leapt to a catwalk twenty feet above the floor of the warehouse. Malkie used her boots of spider climbing to walk along the wall to the catwalk. James followed Ironpeak in, and Summer tentatively brought up the rear.

The lab technicians quickly started destroying documents and probable evidence of the ritual they’d been performing. One by one, they stepped into the rusted iron ring and faded away. The golem moved toward the front door. When it spied Ironpeak, it grabbed a crate full of cannonballs and hurled it at her, just missing. James and Summer took to the high ground to shoot at the golem from afar. He climbed some crates; she teleported to the catwalk when no one was looking. Mort started shooting at the technicians with a variety of weapons. Cazara threw her shuriken at the golem from above. Malkie mostly tried to catch up as she was at the far end of the warehouse.

As the constables struggled to defeat the golem, witchoil sprayed out of it in all directions, coating them in the stuff. James administered an infusion on Ironpeak to protect her from the corrupting effects of the stuff, while the others tried to keep their distance. Except for Malkie. Malkie climbed the thing as it was falling apart, trying to stuff her coat into its exhaust pipe. Unfortunately for her, it grabbed her and hurled her across the room at James, knocking her unconscious. Mort took advantage of this opening to leap in and stab his sword-pistol deep into the heart of the thing, destroying it.

Two of the technicians had been killed, while one lay unconscious from one of Mort’s blowgun darts. The other five had escaped through the rusted ring after destroying a small amount of evidence. While the group recuperated and/or searched through the lab, the unconscious tech disappeared. James drove an iron spike into the technician’s foot in an effort to keep him from leaving, but (other than causing the man to scream out in pain) this had no effect.

The constables found instructions and tools used for a ritual to create some sort of awful witchoil-powered jaguar zombie thing. After first tearing apart the destroyed golem to make sure it was not made from a jaguar, the group put two and two together and suspected that Roger Porter planned to unleash the terrors at Nevard’s rally, which was set to start very soon.

The group rushed back to Dawn Square to warn Nevard, who was still in his tent but about to take the stage. Ironpeak told the elderly skyseer that there was a security issue and asked him to wait a few moments while the constables secured the area. The park had over three thousand people waiting for Nevard’s speech. Around a hundred Flint PD officers were on site for crowd control. While Ironpeak warned Nevard, the others searched the crowd and the area surrounding the stage for signs of trouble.

Cazara and James had a look at an area behind the stage. A ring of trees stood there, making an attractive backdrop for Nevard, but in the center of the trees was an old fountain. Cazara noticed that the circular fountain was made of iron, and had rusted over the years. Having just run into a rusted iron ring which seemed to serve as a portal two the Bleak Gate, the two were immediately suspicious of the fountain. James starting doing an arcane analysis of the fountain while Cazara met up with Ironpeak.

Malkie and Mort worked the crowd, and Summer just took it all in, looking for anything that seemed strange to her. Malkie found Thames Grimsley, whose docker union was well represented amongst the crowd. This included many dockers who were scheduled to work. With no one to load and unload cargo from their ships, a good number of sailors were in attendance as well. Mort got a heavy anti-Danoran vibe from the crowd and sent a courier to warn the Danoran Consulate that there might be trouble after the event.

Summer, an outsider to Risur and human society, noticed a key thing that had escaped the attention of the others. Some druids had parked a pair of wagons in front of the stage. These druids were moving in a decidedly unnatural fashion, and were wearing full robes with gloves and masks to conceal their skin. She told Ironpeak and Cazara and the two went to investigate. Then Summer went to talk with Nevard, telling him that zombie jaguars might attack soon and she hoped he wouldn’t die.

Cazara and Ironpeak went to investigate the druids. Cazara snooped in the back of a wagon while Ironpeak talked to the first druid she could see. It was a very one-sided conversation that mostly consisted of Ironpeak making demands and the druid shaking his head. Finally Ironpeak pushed past him as Cazara got a look inside the wagon. Inside, she saw what looked like a large, rusty bear trap. When unfolded, the device would make a five-foot-diameter rusted ring. That’s when the druids, who were actually skeletons in disguise, attacked.

At Nevard’s rally, the disguised skeletons in front of the stage attacked when Cazara and Ironpeak tried to search their wagons. James was investigating an old fountain behind the stage when suddenly a pair of flayed jaguars materialized from it and made their way toward the crowd. The skeletons hastily summoned up a third jaguar before Cazara and Ironpeak destroyed them and the summoning rings.

The jaguars made their way into the crowd, mauling people who got in their way. Their target seemed to be Nevard, on the far end of the fairgrounds. Malkie managed to grab hold of the collar of one of the jaguars. She told it to obey, and it did. Outpaced by the other jaguars, the Halfling leapt onto the back of her new pet and pursued the others.

James emerged from behind the stage and – seemingly confused – took a pot shot with his musket at Malkie and her jaguar, missing narrowly.

Mort and Summer guarded Nevard, shooting at the fast approaching jaguars. Mort tried to convince Nevard to run, but the old skyseer said he and his guards would stand their ground and not balk in the face of opposition. As the jaguars mauled a pair of Nevard’s guards, Mort retreated on foot and Summer flew away, pulling Nevard along with her.

The group managed to take down the jaguars in short order, but as the fight was finishing up James shot at Malkie again, this time dropping her. James seemed like a man possessed, shooting wildly at his fellow constables. The group moved in on him. Ironpeak managed to grab his musket and disarm James, and Cazara moved in to subdue him. She noticed something was seriously wrong with James and, focusing with her inner eye, saw that he was being controlled by a malevolent spirit. Cazara was able to cast out the spirit, but after the spirit left, James was dead.

The constables carried James’s body to Nevard’s tent. After the police settled things down, Nevard was able to give his speech, sharing his prophecies with the crowd and offering shelter in the Cloudwood for those who wanted to escape the shadow of Cauldron Hill.

The constables arranged transport for James’s body to RHC headquarters and, after dealing with some paperwork, called it a night.

The next morning, Mort was late to arrive from the Danoran Consulate. Summer was also not in attendance, leaving only Malkie, Cazara, and Ironpeak at the morning meeting. Chief Inspector Margaret Saxby demanded a full report on the investigation the constables had been pursuing. She said she was off to meet with Flint Governor Roland Stanfield and would be back in a couple hours, at which point she expected a full report on what was happening and what steps the team planned to take to finish their investigation.

As the three constables headed to their office to begin to organize their information, Assistant Chief Inspector Delft informed Ironpeak that there had been another suspected Ragman murder overnight, as if she didn’t have enough to focus on.

Mort arrived to help with the investigation. The constables pored over their files and diagrammed out the relationships between all the different players in their investigation. While Ironpeak was out of the room, Mort confided in the others that he had not gotten a good night’s sleep, and had also woken that morning with dried blood on his hands and some apparent missing time.

During this time, they had an RHC spirit medium analyze a vial of witchoil to see if any of the souls suspended in the liquid could be contacted. She seemed disturbed by the experience and said she only heard unending screaming.

When Saxby returned, the constables laid out a storyline that seemed to point to Nettles Mayor Reed Macbannin, whose district included Cauldron Hill. Saxby asked some pointed questions about the reliability of the constables’ sources, then told them that moving against Macbannin would be politically complicated. She asked the constables to hold off on any action until the following day; she was going to discuss their investigation with the Governor that afternoon.

After Saxby left again, Delft came in and asked again how confident the constables were in their information. He then asked Mort if he wanted to become an official member of the Royal Homeland Constabulary, as it would be required for the next step. Mort negotiated some fine points and then agreed. Delft told him to go downstairs and fill out the hiring paperwork and then left, indicating he would be back in an hour or so.

When he returned, Delft threw an envelope on the table. “Here’s your search warrant for Macbannin, complete with a judge’s signature. You didn’t get it from me.” Then he left the room. With conflicting orders from their two immediate superiors, the constables went with the Delft option and ascended Cauldron Hill.

At the mayor’s manor, the constables were met by Macbannin’s butler, Cillian Creed. He asked the constables to wait in the garden while he told Macbannin that they had arrived. While waiting, they ran into a horse messenger on his smoke break who pontificated about the beautiful chaos of the human condition, and how the common man was suffering and how he would “gladly give it all up to stop their suffering.” A few constables engaged him in philosophical conversation and basically came to the conclusion that he was some Millerite hippy before he claimed he had places to be and rode off.

The butler returned and ushered the constables into the house, where they were received by Reed Macbannin. The group introduced themselves as RHC constables sent to search the house for evidence related to a smuggling operation and the production of the substance known as witchoil. Something in Mort’s tone seemed to be misinterpreted by Macbannin, and he seemed to wink when he said, “Oh, so Saxby has sent you to ‘look around’ my place to see if I’m up to ‘no good.’ I understand. Please, feel free.”

The group sensed that Macbannin was acquiescing under a false assumption and sent Mort to distract the Mayor with conversation while the other three searched the house. Malkie sidled up to a member of the house staff and tried to blend in, asking if “we’re ready.” The staff member complained that there had been unfortunate setbacks recently and he thought the operation was running behind schedule. Malkie asked to talk to the person in charge and the staff member led her toward the basement stairs.

Meanwhile, Cazara and Ironpeak were in the process of investigating the basement stairs themselves. Ironpeak watched outside the door while Cazara went in. Inside a small room under the house’s main stairs, she found a concrete circle in the middle of the hardwood floor. The concrete circle was surrounded by a rusted ring of iron.
Ironpeak saw Malkie and the staff member approaching and knocked on the door, signaling Cazara to hide. Cazara went through an unexplored door, where she found a strange winch with a chain connected to another concrete block surrounded by a rusted iron ring.

Just as Cazara was wondering when the last earthquake had happened, the entire house shook. Cazara and Ironpeak both heard a structural collapse in the room between the two of them, punctuated by a shout of surprise. They opened the doors to see a woman wearing a rusted-iron necklace who had become mostly stuck in the solid concrete floor. Her head had been smashed open by a falling ceiling beam. In her hand, she clutched a handful of rusted-iron necklaces. Ironpeak took one and out it on. The concrete faded from view and she could see a spiral staircase leading down in its place.

Mort and the mayor witnessed a sudden geyser of witchoil bursting out of the ground in the front yard. Macbannin said, “I seem to have a situation, if you’ll excuse me for a moment…”
