As the earthquake struck Macbannin’s manor, the constables were scattered about the house:

Malkie was being escorted to the basement by a member of the household staff. As soon as the earth shook, Malkie leapt at the woman’s neck and drank her blood, not quite killing her.

Ironpeak and Cazara acquired some rusted iron necklaces and, putting them on, prepared to descend to the basement of the house. Summer popped into existence in their room, seemingly as confused by this turn of events as anyone. She hurriedly told Cazara that she’d been focusing on her questions from the night before, about who was behind the witchoil operation and why. Summer said she had dreamt of the Great Malice, when the Eladrin goddess Srasama died and created two new races: the Tieflings, cursed for bringing down a god, and the Devas, who each inherited a tiny shard of Srasama’s power, and who reincarnated without end. When she awoke, she detected the distinct smell of cigarette smoke in her room.

Mort was chatting with Mayor Macbannin, who suddenly excused himself, leaving Mort alone with Macbannin’s butler, Cillian Creed. Mort offered the man a drink, into which he had slipped some poison. Creed was having none of it. He said, “How stupid do you think I am? I should have killed you back at the Consulate,” before slashing at Mort’s face with shadowy claws, blinding him, and then firing his pistol. Luckily for Mort, the shot went wide, shooting out the window behind him. Mort dove out the window and scrambled away as fast as he could.

Cazara and Ironpeak found a cargo lift in the basement, and also several labs devoted to witchoil. One of them looked like it was devoted to the creation of witchoil-powered golems, the other seemed set up to create flayed jaguars. The jaguar lab was damaged in the quake, and was strewn with body parts. A lone flayed jaguar roamed about the room. Cazara and Ironpeak shut the beast in and continued their search of the basement.

Malkie, with freshly blood on her face, ran into Mayor Macbannin in the hallway near the basement access. The Mayor told Malkie to step aside as he had important business matters. Malkie responded by biting the man’s shirt. Macbannin held out a magic sigil in an effort to ward off the vampire. It seemed to be effective, as Malkie just let the man pass. When Macbannin got past Malkie, he saw Summer, who had just entered the hallway. She did her impression of a scared member of the household staff, and Macbannin seemed to buy it. He told her to run to safety. As she ran past, Malkie took a swipe at her, but missed. Macbannin was just about to enter the basement when Malkie summoned up the courage to jump him, trying to steal his rusted iron necklace (which seemed to be needed for basement access). She found herself unable to touch him, instead doubling over and vomiting up a giant black centipede as Macbannin headed into the basement. Summer turned invisible and followed behind.

Having scared off the Tiefling, Creed reloaded his gun and headed for the basement himself. Upon seeing Malkie in the doorway, he demanded that she get out of the way. When she refused, Creed’s face changed to that of Detective Porter. If Creed thought that would help his cause, he was wrong, Malkie still refused to move. Creed shoved her out of the way. Malkie attacked the man and vomited up another giant centipede. She was clearly not doing well. “You’re the one who doesn’t want me to die, right? You’d better help me not die,” she said, doubled over in pain as the insects from Macbannin’s curse writhed around in her stomach. Creed seemed swayed by this argument. He pulled out a chrome syringe and jabbed it into Malkie’s neck, instantly putting her into a deep sleep.

Mort snuck back into the house when his vision returned. He went into Macbannin’s office and started looting through his desk, looking for interesting papers.

In the basement, Cazara and Ironpeak found a room with a massive engine in it, which seemed to be powered by witchoil. They didn’t have much time to sort out the details, as they had more pressing matters to deal with. Two more of the flayed jaguars were in the room, pawing at one of the doors on the far wall. From behind that room came the cries of James Chinast, who was currently lying on a metal table in the RHC morgue. Cazara noticed one corner of the engine room seemed significantly cleaner than the rest of the basement, as if the necrotic energy of the Bleak Gate had been washed away. She discovered a shower head and hose in that corner that sprayed what seemed to be some industrial variation of holy water, possibly for cleaning up witchoil spills. The spray seemed to burn the jaguars, though one of them was angered by it enough to try to attack Cazara. Before it could do much harm, Ironpeak and Cazara were able to kill it.

The other jaguar finally knocked down the door to James’s room. While beating the cat over the head with a bedpost he had enchanted, James explained to Cazara and Ironpeak that he had been replaced by some sort of machine that had taken on his appearance. James had been able to see what the machine was doing, as though through its eyes, but could not control any of it.

Summer watched invisibly as Creed caught up to Macbannin. Creed told Macbannin that he had taken care of the Tiefling and the Vampire. Macbannin responded by saying they needed to fix the system before the whole mountain exploded. Macbannin was standing on the lift while they talked, and Summer had finally had enough. She shot a chaos bolt at the chain holding up the cargo lift, but she was unable to break it. Macbannin whirled and demanded to know what Summer was doing, still mistaking her for one of his staff. She quickly explained that she thought she had seen the vampire and panicked. He told her the vampire had been taken care of and then instructed her to start cleaning up the basement.

Macbannin and Creed made their way to the engine room, where Ironpeak and Cazara were helping James find where his gear had been stored. Instead of attacking the two said they didn’t have time to fight, but needed to prevent a catastrophic explosion. The constables weighed their options and let the men go through the engine room to a sublevel of the basement to make their repairs.

Mort eventually headed to the basement. He was able to wake Malkie from her slumber. Eventually, the two of them caught up to the others, and Cazara and Mort snuck down to see what the two men were up to. They found a chamber which seemed designed for the storage and movement of witchoil, which was currently flooding. Macbannin and Creed were in a control room of some sort, overlooking the witchoil reservoir, frantically operating switches and levers. Macbannin headed back upstairs, where he attempted to enlist the aid of James to get the witchoil-powered engine running again.

Cazara bargained with Macbannin: answer our questions and we’ll help you stop the catastrophe. Macbannin agreed to talk while he worked. With Creed and Mort in the basement, he seemed willing to talk more freely than he might have otherwise.

Macbannin explained how he was overseeing the operation of a secret military project designed to secure Risur’s borders against future Danoran aggression. His facility gathered witchoil, which was sent to a production facility on “the other side” (which was inferred to mean in the Bleak Gate mirror of Flint). Macbannin said he didn’t know much about his counterpart on the other side, referring to him only as “The Steelshaper.” When the constables threatened to report this operation to higher authorities, Macbannin only smiled and said his operation had been established on the king’s own authority. Macbannin pointed out that his operation was giving Risur the means to defend itself against Danor, and acting against him would weaken the state. He asked the constables on which side they thought they were fighting.

James and Macbannin got the engine started and the witchoil began to flow properly again, preventing a pressure buildup that could have been catastrophic for Cauldron Hill and the communities below. Macbannin reversed the curse he had put on Malkie, and the constables left the manor with some documents, some witchoil, and a lot of information. They headed back to their auxiliary headquarters in Sechim’s Alkahest & Etchings, there to sort out their next move.

Major questions had been raised. Saxby had tried to delay their search of Macbannin’s manor, while Delft had pulled some strings to get them a search warrant. Was Saxby trying to stop them from finding anything? Was Delft sending them into a trap? The constables needed to know who to trust. They asked Summer to look to the stars for an answer.

Furthermore, had the near catastrophe been nothing more than an industrial accident, or had someone sabotaged the operation? If it had been sabotage, was it timed to when the constables would be at the location? Had someone been trying to kill two birds with one stone? The constables asked Summer to look to the stars to see if what had happened on Cauldron Hill had been an accident or sabotage.
Also, they could not be certain if Macbannin was telling the truth or simply telling them what he thought they wanted to hear. After Malkie’s experience trying to fight Macbannin, and two separate losing fights to Creed, the group did not feel like the time was right to try to take the two men down, but had they been too eager to look for a way out? They asked Summer to search the stars for signs of Macbannin lying or telling the truth.

Other questions they would have liked to ask included whether King Aodhan actually had knowledge of Macbannin’s operation and also whether the Jierres knew about it. Mort was very concerned with the last bit, threatening to throw his badge out the window in the interest of protecting Danor from whatever Risuri war machine was being built. In the end, however, Summer only had time to focus on three questions and the others were given higher priority.

The constables sent a message to the office, informing them that the investigation was continuing, and then they set up camp in their room at Sechim’s (which had previously been Nilasa’s bedroom). Cazara took the first watch. About half an hour into the night, Mort rose and began to dress quietly, grabbing his guns and knives. Cazara noticed that his eyes were half-lidded, as though he were sleepwalking. She awoke the others, and Ironpeak tackled Mort. Mort seemed to awake with a start, saying he had no memory of putting his clothes back on after going to bed. The constables restrained Mort with rope, and he struggled against his restraints all night, and awoke in the morning feeling completely exhausted. James examined Mort and said that he seemed to be suffering from some sort of affliction or curse. The group pieced together the idea that Mort was being possessed by some spirit from Cauldron Hill. They also decided that Mort’s bloody hands from the previous morning and the coincident Ragman murder were a pretty strong indicator that the Ragman murders could be the result of people being possessed by an evil spirit from Cauldron Hill.

In the morning, Summer had some answers for the group. She said the stars and her visions told her that they should trust Delft, that the near catastrophe had simply been and accident, and that Mayor Reed Macbannin had been honest with them. The constables now had to decide on their next move…

Odd. I see there's a post from about 2 hours ago by roadtoad, but the only way I could read it was by replying and going to the advanced editor, which shows the previous posts in reverse order.

Yeah. I was a bit flabbergasted at that. The thing is, after having faced level 20 Asrabey and (in the aborted game) level 14 Quital, they'd gotten the impression that, unlike most D&D campaigns, the big name NPCs would not stoop to their level, so they're just gathering information and waiting for the right time.

Asfor me, I figured Macbannin was focused on averting disaster first, and then weaseling his way out of capture second. They really took to his "for the defense of the realm" speech. They *almost* used Skyseer Vision to find out if King Aodhan actually knew about the operation, but instead went with "was Macbannin lying?" I figure Macbannin believes himself to be working on a royal commission, so was not lying when he said it went all the way to the king, since that's what he believed.

I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes next.

whew.. I am now 4 sessions behind on recapping. Working on it; hope to have it up sometime this weekend.

short recap for those who know the upcoming plot points of the adventure:

They went back to Macbannin's Manor and arrested Creed for the murder of Nilasa, but Macbannin is still in business. In order to keep the plot moving, I've engineered a schism in Colossus Cell caused by Macbannin's sudden notoriety. Basically, the plot continues as normal, but Macbannin is ostracized from the people who are supposed to be running things after his death. I'm sure he'll die and end up joining the Ghost Council at some point... or I'll just replace him with Kaja Stewart (see below)

They ran into the thoughtbeasts at the fair. I let our technologist commandeer the steam suit, but with only one save before it would break down (after a skill challenge to get it working at all). He then grabbed the Nock Gun and shot the Worm Maw. Our Warden got "eaten" by the Maw, our assassin was 1 hp away from dead with one of the little ones sucking on his brain, but they ended up winning the fight, but not saving Langfield.

They set up a buy with Kaja Stewart and ambushed her. Mort shot her to death. Two things here: one, we have a house rule that you cannot knock someone unconscious with a gunshot. If NPCs go to zero from being shot, they just die. This to encourage the group to be creative in making arrests. Secondly, the group has been slaughtering people all over town. When the others in the group asked Mort to not kill the Important NPC, he did it anyway, saying, "we can just get a Spirit Medium to question her."

I didn't like the, "oh, we can just kill everyone and still get info out of them" tack he was taking, so I decided to have her soul be immediately whisked away by Nicodemus, leaving them with few answers to their questions. Hopefully that will slow down their murder spree. And, as mentioned above, I might stick her on the Ghost Council in the future instead of Macbannin.

Actual recaps of these events a-coming... :)

Catching up on two sessions from over a month ago:

The constables returned to RHC Headquarters after the events on Cauldron Hill and the rough night at Sechim’s Alkahest. They pulled in some favors to get Mort cured of his murderous impulses, which had been brought on by exposure to the energies of Cauldron Hill.

Delft met with the squad to go over the results of their search of Macbannin’s estate. His main concern focused on Macbannin’s assistant, Cillian Creed, who also used the alias Roger Porter. The constables had good evidence that the man had killed Nilasa Hume. The constables had uncovered a smuggling conspiracy that seemed to endanger the city, and that was too much to deal with immediately, but surely they could arrest one man for one murder. He ordered them to make an arrest.

The constables were beginning to suspect that Chief Inspectress Margaret Saxby was protecting Macbannin, so instead of arresting him on behalf of Risur, Mort talked to Danoran Consulate Security Chief Julian Lebrix about getting extradition papers. The murder of Nilasa had technically taken place on Danoran soil (at the Danoran Consulate), so Lebrix was happy to write up the papers. The other constables took care of the RHC extradition paperwork, and they were all off to Cauldron Hill again.

At the estate, Macbannin met them at the gate and told them that Creed had fled to Parity Lake. The constables asked to search the grounds, which Macbannin consented to. As he escorted them to the house, however, he pulled out Creed’s trademark chrome pistol and started firing. The constables were able to subdue the man and identify him as Cillian Creed (wearing yet another face). Once the Mage Cuffs were on, his illusory appearance could not be sustained without pain, and Creed’s true face was once again revealed; exposed muscle tissue and a viscous black goo replaced his skin.

With the Nilasa case wrapped up, the constables were put back onto everyday duty. Saxby brought in another team – one more likely to follow her orders – to continue the investigation of Reed Macbannin and the smuggling operation.

A week later, the skyseer Nevard died. His state funeral was an overblown affair, much more ostentatious than the old sage would have liked. Later in the Summer, Guy Goodson got married. Gale snuck into the affair, delivered a gift to the new couple, and then flew away without a word. Toward the end of Summer, a new string of serial murders caught Ironpeak’s attention. Five victims in the Central District had their brains removed through their palates. Other events around town included the continued construction of the new subrail system, a new affliction known as Distant Madness, which causes the victim to be unable to gauge distances, and the opening of the Kaybeau Arms and Technology Exposition.

The arms expo started with the beginning of Autumn, as did the seasonal afternoon rains. The constables were assigned to work the fairgrounds, arriving early every morning and keeping an eye out for weapons smuggling, espionage, organized crime and the like. Every day, the expo died out around 3:30, when the afternoon rains rolled in as if by clockwork and dispersed the crowd.

The constables took in the sights at the expo. Mort bought some new advanced bullets while Ironpeak and James were drawn in by new technologies. Ironpeak found a booth run by a fellow Goliath named Nock who was developing an enormous seven-barreled musket which would be unwieldy for humans but just right for her. James found a pair of entrepreneurs who were working out the kinks on a new suit of armor which was too heavy to be moved by its wearer, but had a built-in steam engine to assist in its movement. Malkie was mostly distracted by the fact that famed entertainer Rock Rackus had a stage set up for daily performances. As Malkie handled PR for the man in addition to her work for the RHC, she found herself very busy trying to do two jobs at once.

A few days into their security gig, something unusual happened. A young mage with a staff of solid gold seemed to be summoning extra-dimensional beings near Rock Rackus’s stage. The beings were bizarre things that none of the constables had ever heard of before, and they seemed to be fading in and out of reality. Sometimes they were translucent and sometimes they were solid. Some of them were like fleshy dragonflies with beaks on the ends of long trunks, while a large beast seemed to be nothing more than a maw and some tentacles to shove food into the maw. Even weirder, the maw was like a toothy ring. If “eaten,” a person would just fall out the other side. The thing demonstrated this by picking up a bystander and shoving him into its maw. The experience was fatal enough, however, and the constables sprang into action to deal with this madness.

Ironpeak charged straight at the caster, who looked as confused as Ironpeak about the summoned beasts. Ironpeak demanded her golden staff, and the mage gave it up, saying she’d just recently gotten it from a shady dealer at a nearby trinket tent (where she’d had to give a password) and she just wanted to try it out at the shooting range and she didn’t know it was going to cause so much trouble. Ironpeak decided the woman was harmless and moved on to fight the main threat: the giant tentacle-maw thing. James donned the nearby suit of steam-powered armor and made for the seven-barreled musket stall. The small flying things drained thoughts from their chosen victims, and Ironpeak got first-hand experience at being devoured by the maw. Her consciousness seemed to leave her body and become trapped inside the beast, but only for a moment, as Malkie managed to finish it off before it could consume Ironpeak’s thoughts.

When the dust settled, Mort and Ironpeak were down, as were the caster who had started the incident, and several other bystanders. Mort and Ironpeak were only injured, but the bystanders and mage were dead. A pair of civilians had pitched in with the fighting: Rock Rackus had fired a few golden bullets from his solid gold, diamond-encrusted pistol; and a Dwarven Eschatologist named Kvarti Gorbatiy, who fought using a long rifle with a spyglass mounted on the top.

Flint PD secured the scene, followed swiftly thereafter by some additional RHC constables. Everything in the area was taken into custody as potential evidence, including the steam suit, the seven-barreled musket, and all of Rock Rackus’s stage props.

As Cazara investigated the dead bystanders, she noticed that one of them had been shot by a golden bullet. She concealed this evidence, but encouraged Malkie to talk to Rackus about not firing his weapon irresponsibly. Malkie talked to Rackus about going to the shooting range the following afternoon. At first Rock agreed, since the police had confiscated all of his stage props, and therefore he didn’t “have a job.” When Malkie suggested that he try a minimalist approach (no distractions to keep any eyes off of Rock himself), Rackus changed his mind, saying he needed to work on his new approach for the next day’s show.

After a few minutes, the solid gold staff turned to wood. Summer checked it out and said she recognized it as an ancient design. The civilization now known only as “The Ancients” possessed little in the way of metalworking, except where gold was concerned, and Summer remembered learning about their magic during her childhood in Elfaivar, over 500 years prior. Many of their magical implements were said to turn to solid gold when arcane power was channeled through them. The group found it odd that the dead mage would find so rare an artifact at a trinket stall, and decided to investigate for an antiquities black market.

Upon investigating the trinket tent, they found nothing more than what would be typical of a craft fair: hand-made jewelry and baubles dominated the various tables and stalls. Summer did pick up a strange pattern in the crowd, however: several people went to a stall in particular and asked for an anniversary gift for their wife, Ethel. Surmising that this might be a password, but unwilling to expose their faces to the vendor, Summer had her new raven familiar, Snow, do the dirty work.

Snow squawked “Ethel” to the vendor, who provided the bird with a note. The note said to meet at a nearby under-construction subrail station at 4:00 the following day…

Two more sessions to catch up on still. Coming soon to an internet near you!

Ambush at the Subrail Station

The next day Summer had an appointment with a suspected dealer of black-market antiquities. In case that went poorly, the Constables scouted out the under-construction subrail station and decided to set up in hidden positions ahead of time. There was a large tarp strung over the entire rail station, theoretically protecting it from the daily rains. Stacks of steel reinforcement bars lay under smaller tarps around the work site. Mort and Cazara took advantage of these, while James, Malkie, and Ironpeak perched above the work pit at street level.

After a short wait, a group of people showed up. A large man in a large hat carried a large chest on his back and a bundle of mechanical parts over his shoulder. He was followed by a woman in a dark coat who seemed to be in charge. Several men followed behind, with bundles of their own. The men set these mechanical bundles around the work site, and then hid amongst the equipment, much as Mort and Cazara had done. The woman and the large man set up the large chest in an inconvenient corner of the work site, forcing any potential buyer to walk through their ambush (and the RHC’s) in order to check out the contents of the chest.

Summer arrived and walked through the construction site to meet with the woman and what turned out to be her golem assistant. The golem opened up the large chest, which appeared to be bigger on the inside, for it held a greatsword in addition to other enchanted weapons and items. Summer asked the dealer about Ancient items similar to the staff from the day before (which had turned to gold when used). The golem pulled out the greatsword and an amulet. The sword was made of wood, with obsidian teeth in place of a blade. The amulet was made of stone and was covered in elemental runes. The seller explained that the items had been recently acquired from a private collection, and that they matched the description Summer gave: when activated, they would turn to solid gold as well. The seller quoted a price that was far above the amount of money Summer had brought, so she asked for time to collect the funds and began her exit.

At this point, Ironpeak and Malkie came sliding down the mud side of the pit. Ironpeak identified herself as an RHC Constable and told the weapons dealer she was under arrest, but then she comically fell face-first into the mud, giving the enemies a split second to prepare. The woman summoned a gun and shot at Ironpeak while her golem scooped up the chest and tried to escape. Cazara leapt from her hiding place to the top of the tarp, preparing to drop it on everyone. Mort dashed toward one of the mechanical bundles as it started to move. He found a mechanical walking musket turret trying to stand up. He made short work of the machine and moved toward another.

Ironpeak managed to tackle the arms dealer as Malkie closed in. Mort shot some of the lackeys hiding around the rail station, slowly working his way toward the main fight. Summer hid behind piles of rebar while taking pot shots at the enemies. And Cazara used her shuriken to cut the lines holding up the tarp, dropping it down and covering many of the combatants in either the tarp itself or a deluge of pooled rainwater. Cazara herself landed with ease in the vicinity of Ironpeak’s wrestling match.

The arms dealer pointed at Ironpeak and Cazara. Pistols with bayonets suddenly appeared in each of here hands. She stabbed them both, then pulled the triggers on the pistols, and scampered down a nearby stairwell, unwittingly moving directly toward Mort Stark. Ironpeak, Cazara, and Malkie gave pursuit, but they soon found themselves in a crossfire: the stairs down led to a platform where two staircases joined and then descended to the rail platform. As they caught up with the arms dealer, they noticed the musket turrets at the top of each staircase, aiming down at the landing. The arms dealer seemed desperate, however. She summoned her biggest gun: an already-lit cannon.

The cannon went off in the close quarters of the landing, catching even the arms dealer in the blast. While she had knocked down her three pursuing constables, she had also attracted the attention of Mort Stark, who could now see her, as the stairs had descended below the level of the fallen tarp. Mort shot to kill before the arms dealer could summon up anything more dangerous. His bullet hit the mark, and the woman fell dead. The golem was subdued easily enough and the fight was over.

Immediately, the other Constables derided Mort for killing the woman. She might have had knowledge of an arms smuggling ring or other organized crime. Mort insisted that if she needed to be interrogated, they could simply call on a spirit medium like they had done with Nilasa. Hugh Pearsall was surely still in town, after all.

The woman’s identification papers listed her name as Kaja Stewart. Hugh was unavailable, but a RHC staff spirit medium was able to make an attempt to talk to her. However, he was unable to make contact with her. The medium indicated that her soul must have moved on quickly, or simply disappeared altogether.

The Constables had two more Ancient artifacts: a sword and an amulet. But they would have to pursue other leads to discover what was going on, and how and why they had summoned strange beasts at the arms fair.

Since they didn't kill Reed Macbannin, who we expected to be dead, but they did kill Kaja Stewart, I'm having a notion of having Kaja take Macbannin's place in Schism, but I haven't read enough of Schism to know exactly how that's going to work out.

If so, that's why they couldn't get ahold of her spirit.

If not, then she must have gotten sucked into the witchoil of her golem or something. Mostly I wanted to punish the players for just killing a suspect who could have been taken non-lethally. (Mort is the "essentials" Assassin. He can kill creatures he has just damaged if they have 10 or fewer hit points. The entire table said "no!" when I asked if he wanted Kaja to be dead. He thought for about ten seconds and then said, "yeah, she's dead. If we need to talk to here, call a Spirit Medium.")

We're three sessions past this (they just exited the ziggurat). With the holidays behind us, I plan to get these reports caught up this week.

Digging for more Information

After the ambush at the subrail station, the Constables had some investigating to do. Mort hit the streets to find information. He returned later with a story from a teamster named Marcus who said that he knew of a woman named Kaja Stewart who dealt in rare items and had previously worked on “the hill.” Unfortunately, this was not enough help for the Constables, as it seemed that Stewart had left the employ of Reed MacBannin after the events of the summer, and they were trying to track down the source of the potentially-dangerous ancient artifacts.

Summer looked to the sky before she slept, seeking answers on anything and everything. Ironpeak shared a some Martial Science theory with her. In addition to codifying the way combat worked, with measurable indices such as Armor Class and Hit Points, some new theorists at the Battalion had been experimenting with a Theory of Narrativium. This theory presupposed the existence of a story, or “plot,” which could be seen to drive certain people to behave towards certain ends, in the interest of making a good story. A radical theory, to be sure, but one that Ironpeak hoped that Summer would be able to meditate on in an effort to find a lead. This led Summer to ask the stars, “Where is the plot going?” She also concentrated on the ancient artifacts, attempting to learn of their origins.

That night, Summer dreamt of an ancient ziggurat. Inside, she saw three orcs, holding the three items aloft and seeming to cast a spell at a great plate of solid gold which seemed to be blocking a passageway. She got the impression that they were sealing a gate, but they spoke in a language she did not recognize. Their attire reminded her of ancient history lessons from her schooling in Elfaivar. In addition, she dreamt of the three artifacts being displayed at a museum in Flint: the Pardwight University Museum of Natural History.

The next morning, Summer shared this information with the others. Some of the Constables went to Pardwight University to investigate the museum, but Summer and Cazara were called in to consult on another case by one of Saxby’s new favorite constables: Sergeant Blake Arrington. Sergeant Arrington said that her squad was now working the Parity Lake Conspiracy case, and they had found something that they thought Cazara’s team should see.

Arrington led Summer and Cazara to the basement of a Parity Lake steel mill. A man’s body lay on the floor, its skull crushed and hands bound with a twisted steel bar. The man had the remains of a rusted-iron necklace, identical to the ones used on MacBannin’s manor (and elsewhere) to cross over into the Bleak Gate through a rusted iron ring. His throat was filled with inert witchoil, which held no souls. (Notably, not even the man’s own soul had been trapped by the arcane liquid.) The only identification on the man were the initials “A.G.” sewn into his socks. In addition, there were the remains of a finely-crafted bronze golem in the basement. The golem had been torn apart, as though every seam and joint had failed at once. Its head was still in relatively good shape, however. Also of note at the crime scene was a ring of rusted iron built into the steel mill’s basement floor. The constables gathered the remains of the man and the golem and had them sent to RHC Headquarters for further examination. On the way out, Summer noticed a piece of torn fabric, made of several layers of stitched cotton and silk, the likes of which she’d not seen since her time in pre-Malice Elfaivar. Only a very wealthy Eladrin woman would own a garment made from that fabric.

Meanwhile, the other constables traveled to the museum to talk with the curator, Hans Weber. Professor Weber explained that he was aware of an archaeological expedition to a ziggurat the High Bayou in the south of Risur that had brought back some artifacts that matched the description of the items the constables had recovered. Weber described the “pre-Kelland people,” a civilization that lived in Risur thousands of years ago, before King Kelland founded the nation of Risur. These people were sometimes referred to as “The Ancients.” He told the constables about how the Ancients built stone ziggurats and had advanced knowledge of astronomy, magic, and goldsmithing. He told the constables that the expedition had been led by Dr. Xambria Meredith, of Mitchell University in the city of Slate. Dr. Meredith found the three objects at the High Bayou site and had them delivered to the museum several months ago, but then they were stolen from the museum. Dr. Weber requested that the constables return the museum’s items as soon as possible. Malkie explained that the items were evidence in an ongoing case, but once the case was resolved, he could have the items for the museum. Before leaving, the constables asked if Dr. Weber knew where to find Dr. Meredith. He said she was “recuperating” on the Pardwight campus after a traumatic experience at the dig site.

The two constable teams met up at headquarters to compare notes before heading to visit Xambria. She was staying in a faculty apartment on the campus. She seemed distracted and distant, but invited the investigators in for tea and cinnamon rolls. Xambria told them about her archaeological dig in the High Bayou, a unique area in the foothills of the Anthras Mountains between Risur and Ber. The giant spiders native to the area had created great silk-and-earth barriers which slowed the flow of the streams coming down from the mountains, creating a bayou environment nowhere near the ocean. In that bayou, Xambria and some colleagues had discovered an Ancient ziggurat and had come to Flint to find financing for an archaeological dig. The Danoran tiefling financier Caius Bergeron ended up financing their trip. Mort recognized the name and knew that he could regularly be found at the Silver Swan Inn in North Shore, where he regularly stayed during his months-long visits to Flint.

After receiving enough funds to pay for her dig, Xambria assembled a team mostly consisting of graduate students from Pardwight and Mitchell Universities. They started their excavation of the ziggurat site in early Spring. They sent some of the ancient items back for further study, such as the three artifacts the constables had run across. Upon their receipt, Bergeron sent a message specifically asking Dr. Meredith to be on the lookout for a golden plate or seal, and that if one was found, he would send a team of specialists to deal with it. They found the golden seal and Bergeron sent a team of two humans and three tieflings. Xambria then made a run for supplies, as she could not do any more work at the site until the specialists were finished. When she returned two days later, her team was dead at and around the entrance to the ziggurat. She fled the site as quickly as she could and returned to Flint.

The constables stayed into the evening, asking for more details on Xambria’s expedition. Eventually, she told them her own theory on the Ancients. She claimed that the pre-Kelland people were orcs, not humans (as Weber claimed). Excavations of Ancient sites almost always turn up gold relics, but never the means to mine or forge gold. Xambria said she believes that the Ancients traded for the items from another, more advanced, civilization. This other civilization has never been found. She said she thinks it might have been a civilization from another plane of existence, or another planet, that used some sort of travel magic. She thinks that method of travel must have stopped working at some point, and that the cessation of that trade partner may have hastened the demise of the pre-Kelland civilization. In defense of this somewhat radical theory, she pointed out other examples of now-extinct civilizations, such as the demons of Drakr and the dragons of Ber. She even brought up an old Clergy scroll that mentions a demon named “Egal the Shimmering, Lord of the Golden Legion,” as a potential match for the missing civilization.

After listening to her account of her expedition, and politely listening to her pet theory, the constable finally left Dr. Meredith’s apartment. Mort said he thought he could set up a meeting with Caius Bergeron, as their families had interacted in the past. The constables looked him up at headquarters and found a picture of Bergeron. The workday had clearly gone on too long as the non-tieflings focused on the spiky ridge along Bergeron’s jaw line. “Is that skin or bone?” asked someone. The constables quickly looked up the rest of their files on tieflings and noted a similar structure on the jawlines of all the males. It was probably Ironpeak or Cazara who dubbed the term “fleshbeard” to refer to the phenomenon. Delft stormed in at this point and told everyone to go home for the night.

Malkie and Mort managed to secure a dinner meeting with Bergeron the next evening. They tried to get information out of him by pretending to be in search of funding for an archaeological dig on Axis Island. This strategy backfired, as they were blithely ignorant of the fact that Danor had closed off access to Axis Island. Malkie impressed Bergeron by eating a serving of polip alla infanti, or live octopus. Unfortunately, the constables learned little from Bergeron except that he had indeed financed Xambria’s mission, but that he had not heard from her since the disaster at the ziggurat.

All the leads seemed to lead to one place: the ziggurat. The constables approached Delft, and he agreed. He said that tracking down the origin of the dangerous magical items that were known to have released dangerous beasts in Flint should fall under the part of the RHC charter that covers defense of the kingdom. He approved their expense request and handed out stipends for the constables’ own expedition to the ziggurat.
