D&D 5E Character Creation Help - Can't match stats on pregenerated character sheets for Starter Set

I started playing a few weeks ago at a con, and have been working on a new character for a PoTA.

As a tool for understanding character creation a little better, I started trying to recreate stats for the starter set character sheets:

I've been working on the first character on the sheet (the melee fighter), and I've gotten stuck on armor class. Every time I calculate it I come up with 16, yet the pregen says 17.

What am I missing?

The noble fighter has Fighting Style (Defense) (see right-hand lower box). +1 AC.

The dexterity modifier is ignored, as it's heavy armour.

So: Base AC = 16 for Chainmail, then +1 from Fighting Style (Defense).

I was applying the dexterity modifier and I didn't have to.
