-You will need to streamline a bit to use a class rather than downtime, and may start to look like an artificer, but there are some good guidelines in there.

Those are just free ones I've seen around. Looking at available potions that give spell-like effects, then expending spell slots to imbue them is a simpler port rather than creating a brand new mechanic. Then you can add class features that expand on that. The Sorcerer's metamagic ability and point-to-slot conversion could also help you out.
