My character in an old AD&D campaign was an artificial being created to oppose a certain group of baddies (I didn't know that at character creation, it was revelaed during the campaign). In the final confrontation with the baddies, a lever had to be held down to destroy the baddies' lair (and them). The lever could only be held down by a person or it wouldn't work. Of course, that means that the one holding the lever blows up along with the lair.
Almost every PC volunteered to hold the lever and sacrifice themselves, but my PC was the party leader and ordered the others to get to safety while he held down the lever.
