I've usually play things out round by round. As Thanee said, my concern would be that you may end up playing the PC's more than the players.
But I may have some simple combat coming up (4 L3 PCs vs one opponent, and in another game 4 L2 PC's vs 2-3 opponents). I might give the 3 rounds method a try.
