Hopefully many of them will replace the familiar which no one in our group ever uses anyway.

And here I was hoping that there would be something expanding on familiars in a WotC book.

While our group uses Dweomercraft: Familiars, Encyclopedia Arcane: Familiars, and TLG's Book of Familiars - further WotC support for familiars (and animal companions) would of been nice.

I am glad to see new alternate class features and the new fey heritage feats. The new spells will also be nice. However, I see a few things that for me are disappointing including:

1. No new base classes. While I personally have found the majority of WOTC's new base classes to not be well done, I do like new base classes when done well. With this book, I was hoping that we would get some of the 2e specialists from Complete Wizard and PO: Spells and Magic brought back as base classes. I was also hoping to see the UA specialist variants expanded upon

2. Chapter 1 and Chapter 6. Ever since the 2e splat books, I have really found this type of material to be filler taking up valuable space that could have been put to better use. While others may disagree, this type of material, imo, is better saved for Dragon articles or perhaps a seperate product (in the case of locations).

So, looks like the table of contents for Complete Mage is up.

Thoughts at this stage?

I was hoping for more warlock-related stuff, but since it appears to be incredibly limited, not worth the money for even MORE feats and PrCs I'll likely never use. I got the races books (except for the Dragon and Eberron) and the first wave of Complete Splatbooks. I think That's enough for now.

As for Spells, PHB, PHB II, and Spell Compendium give me more than I'll need for some time to come. Not to say it might nnot be useful down the road, but at this present moment, it's not going on my shelf.

I agree with Mieric. I was really hoping there would be some material dedicated to familiars. I think the fact that most people avoid a basic class feature shows that the rules need some adjusting. I'm not looking for more power necessarily, just something to make them more appealing.

I'm glad they don't have a lot of warlock support, that is the stuff that has limited use. It only works with one class where the feats and prestige classes can work with multiple base classes.

What Crothian said!

Is it just me or do some of those feat names sound a lot like spell names? Summon Elemental in particular sticks out.

More Assassin spells means I'll certainly be looking at it (my favourite Prestige Class). And yeah, add to the list of those curious to know what an Ultimate Magus is (and what they can do!)

I think its good that there was warlock support. There are many players who are interested in the warlock and would like more material on it.

I think its good that the warlock support is limited. There are people who could care less about the warlock and the book should serve their needs too.
