Lord Pendragon and Painfully you are taking the post exactly where I wanted it to go...

Pendragon you mentioned Horse special abilities ... anything beyond better stats ? Combat or special abilities ?

Feats are a way to go for sure...

Our horses did not have any statistical advantages, other than a HD and stat increase. The DM did rule that they had excellent training, so it was possible, for instance, for my fighter-mage to cast Fly and (as a free action) command his horse to flee the immediate scene, then wait for me to retrieve him. (He'd been trained for that sort of thing.) Things of that sort.

For feats and special abilities, it might require magic, or at least more money.

One idea would be to buy a Ring of Animal Friendship. Cast it on your mount, then pay a druid to cast Awaken on the same beast. Give your warhorse a few levels of barbarian, and he definitely won't be a pushover. :D

Be aware that the Handle Animal Skill allows you (or a payed trainer) to train an animal tricks. Animal Friendship does "only" give you Animals INT x 2 automatic tricks, but it is not that you couldn`t do the same with Handle Animal...

The tricks might - DM`s Decision - also include some variable combat tactics, and, if he is verys generous, also include statistic changes...

Or remember that fiends, celestials and dragons seem to be in dire need of bizarre sex. Convince one of them to mate with a horse.

Hmmm... Half-dragon heavy warhorse...

How about let the character take Leadership feat? The special horse can be cohort. As that horse is a special one, they can have above average stats (say, same point buy as PCs) and can even have class levels.
