[D&D] Help! I remember a monster fuser class...

...and it's driving me nuts because I can't find it. It was in an older edition book. I thought it was in a race specific book with dual-classes, like "Orc Barbarian-Bard is a ____" but now I'm not so sure. Basically, it could graft any two creatures and there was a chance it'd survive. And a chance that it could breed true. (It even hinted at that's how we got griffons, hippogrifs, and such). I can even remember the pictures that were in it. But I can't remember the book Or the class. And of course "the google" isn't helping. Can anyone help me out here? Does anyone even remember what I'm talking about? Thanks in advance for the help.

Dragon Magazine issue #237 has a "wilderness kit" (this was in the AD&D 2nd edition days) called the "merlane" that could create crossbred monsters. Could that be what you were looking for?
