As evidenced by the above advice, it depends heavily on which class you favor -- Cleric or Paladin.

Assuming that you're GM allows multiclassing as a Paladin (PHB doesn't allow this, but Forgotten Realms and many other settings do), Charisma makes a good choice.

If you are going mostly Cleric, I definately agree that Wisdom will give the greatest payoff.

I would not pump Strength, easy enough to get a Bull's Strength when it is needed. Having an odd score just means if you get lucky, you will get much more from the spell than someone else.

I'd go with Str. Wisdom gets you +1 to save DCs, and a bonus spell, however you can put your next point into Wisdom and not lose much of the benefit. At the lower levels, you won't have enough spells to make you a good offensive caster, so focus on what helps you every time you get into melee combat.

If you're into melee, pick up Divine Might and bump charisma. It'll give you a bonus to saves, undead turning, and combat all in one.
