D&D 5E Engaging Players with Magic Item Crafting

OptionalRule

I've had a number of players who wanted to collect items from interesting monsters, and who were interested in using that to craft potions. Since they found it fun, and it created active character hooks for them, I created a simple set of rules to engaging them with gathering materials and crafting items. Have you experienced this in your games and how have you handled it?

My system is simple.

There are formula's / instructions for most magic items.

Gathering components is almost always a Survival check or medicine check for humanoids. What to gather is usually a Religion or Arcana check.

I then give them a discount (In gp) if the gathered "thing" is appropriate to the object created. So an item may be useful for several things.

I like to keep it simple.
