I'm working on a complete flowchart of every major edition of D&D. I'm fact checking. Below is the image (under the spoiler). Any comments, critiques, or corrections are welcome.

you missed the beginning.
before the boxed set in 1974 there was a series of xeroxed handscrawled papers passed around.
and before that there was chainmail.
D&D has it roots in wargaming.

I was specifically going for published editions with the title "Dungeons and Dragons" on it.

That was my reason to omit chainmail, at least.

I'm not sure about what book has the "black box w/ dragon" on it. If you got anymore info, I'ld love it.

I debated following the "Intro sets" (First Quest would spin off 2nd, The Basic Games off 3rd/3.5) but decided that the intro games were really subsets of their respective editions. However, I might expand the picture to add the other starter sets if people want.

you have posted one, right to the rules cylopedia. thats a big black box, with some loos sheets that let you learn how to play and DM, as a Zanzer dungeon adventure.
the book in the link is just that: a book instead of loose sheets.

well is that the 2ed or 3ed Holmes boxed set you have? they were different.

Original D&D(1973) also went thru various changes.
xeroxed papers
wood grained boxed set
white boxed set
Original Collectors edition boxed set.

and then you get all the supplements too. I-V. although V is a mass combat
