Quests are exactly not CRPG-style fetch quests. They're directly related to the story arc of the adventure or the goals of the PCs. Most of your quests can emerge organically from the goals the PCs set for themselves. Here's what the DMG has to say:

"Often, minor quests matter primarily to a particular character or perhaps a subset of the party. Such quests might be related to a character's background, a player goal, or the ongoing events in the campaign relevant to one or more characters."

You're not going to see "Slay 50 wolves" on the lists of quests. ;)

Ok well maybe it IS as written in the DMG a bit, but not just something the players come up with, but they have been introduced to some idea that they wish to delve further into. Those other things they didn't do around the last town because they were hurried to finish this main story arc, and want to go check out that farm that keeps having missing goats, if it wasn't already tied to the main plot they were already working on. So the quest reward may be very little XP save for the combats, and whatever the farmer gives them for returning or preventing further goats going missing in the future. Probably a few goats or a bunch of cheese and milk and other stories that may be leads to later side-quests they may want to take on to adventure in the area and explore the world itself and the people in it.

Mostly that reward for the players is the extra effort I put into fleshing out the world and its peoples, and the PC's get what paltry things the people needing some task done can offer. On top of that the PCs gain notoriety for their accomplishments. So they may not have to wait until 9th level to earn a name for themselves. ;)

Which in fact will reward them much later with more things where there are asked directly as part of the plot to do things because the PC party is known for the things it does, and gets them more work, to offer greater adventure and treasures later. So while it may not award direct XP or treasure now for the quest, it sets them up for greater things in the future. They may be terrible terrible things, but they will be great things to look forward to. ;)
