Are they actually competing though?

Sure, it's a reboot, but nothing says you have to like one and not the other. As long as it's got a good story, engaging characters, good dialogue, and it makes me laugh (I am assuming that the reboot is still going to be a comedy), I have room in heart (i.e. DVD collection) for both.

because it is a reboot comparisons with the original are inevitable and that will include weighing up the portrayal of the main characters and the relative talent of the actors.

that doesn't mean they both can't be enjoyed or indeed that the reboot can't come out as the more likable. For instance I like the original Planet of the Apes and also the new Rise of the Planet of the Apes movie (whereas the other one only the alien planet is forgotten) in the same way I enjoyed Dredd and even admit to like stallones mutant portrayal

so yes both might be good but they will nonetheless compete for rank within my mind

I'm going to wait till a trailer comes out so I can see if their style of humor in the setting will be something I'll enjoy
