D&D 5E Goals for a party - why should they even go anywhere together?

My players currently have a Lawful Evil character among their crew, a witch. She is an npc, so her evil deeds are at the discretion of me as a DM. But she follows strict rules, and respects authority. My players know that they can rely on her loyalty, and that she will not defy an order. However, they also know that there is little she wouldn't be capable of doing to her enemies. She once turned a guy into a lizard, because he made a pass at her in a tavern, and never turned him back. And she has no problems with torturing a prisoner for information.

Evil characters can work together with a good or neutral party, especially if controlled by the DM. But often I find that having players play an evil character, isn't very good for the campaign.
