good base class for dread pirate?

what's a good base class for a dread pirate? Rogue comes to mind, but the base attack may be a problem so...any ideas?

Edit: forgot to say. fighter is a possibility but I wanted a bit more finesse in his fighting style, not just a pounding machine. something that kicks ass and puts on quite a show.

Swashbuckler is from Complete Warrior... as is Hexblade, which should be a good lead-in for Dread Pirate (flavorwise), but really isn't, due to skill requirements...

Honestly why not ninja? You could be the sneaky, sometimes invisible, sudden striking dread pirate. Wis to AC when unarmoured is gravy. Overcome that BAB with a masterwork weapon, weapon finese and a high Dex.

When you go Dread Pirate, take the Dishonorable route. You don't have to be evil, you just have to make others think you are.
