Depending on his stats and fighting style, Duelist might work well.

Fairly sure that duelist requires nothing in your off-hand (as well as no armour) in order for bonuses to work. Also need a high int bonus to make most of the perks work, and without the high int you're left with a very low ac (+1 to ac/duelist level up to your int modifier).

As to dervish, would work but the bonuses only really start stacking when using slashing weapons (also need WF in a slashing weapon to qualify).

I'd agree with the fighter route presently and just go down the combat expertise tree, or else try feats like the tactical ?ellusive target? feat. Infact there are tons of feats to look at if you want to do the swashbuckley sort of thing, which would make fighter a good option

Duelists can use off-hand weapons (though not if they are using Precise Strike), but there is an armor restriction.

I said that it would depend upon stats - a high Int would be key.
