From my Oxford Concise Dictionary:
barren * adj. 1 (of land) too poor to produce much or any vegetation > (of a tree or plant) not producing fruit or seed. 2 (of a female animal) unable to bear young. 3 bleak and lifeless. 4 (barren of) devoid of. * n. (barrens) chiefly N. Amer. barren tracts of land.

- ORIGIN ME: from OFr. barhaine, of unknown origin.

Given that, both Acid and Fire could work. I would suggest negative energy, but where talking about a metallic dragon here, so it doesn't really fit.

Acid it is then, cone (as green dragon) or line (as black dragon)?

For 3 out of the 5 metallics, the shapes of the breath weapons are different, so that would suggest line.

Hmm... let's see:

Brass: Line of Fire
Bronze: Line of Electricity
Copper: Line of Acid
Silver: Cone of Cold
Gold: Cone of Fire.

IMHO it would be better to give the Electrum a cone rather than a line breathweapon, as the majority of the other metallics have line breathweapons, thus evening out the ration of lines to cones from 3:2 to 1:1. But I will go with line if you all think it is a better idea.

The stronger metallic dragons seem to have cone-shaped breathweapons (silver and gold).

Exactly, and the electrum is only slightly weaker than the silver.

Shape doesn't necessarily have anything to do with power.

d4, d6, d8, or d10? starting at one dice or two?

I'd say starting with two dices as with the most metallic dragons and d8 or d6.
