How do you handle buying and selling magic items?

"Well, we have this wand thing. Neither of us can use it and Ebon.."

"No WAY in Hell am I touching that thing again!" Ebon said, scratching at the recent scars his last experimentation with the item left on him.

"Like I was saying, Ebon isn't touching it again. So.. maybe we can get something from it. There must be a wizard in this city that wants such a thing."

Days later, in a shaded part of the bazaar, a tatooed elf woman runs delicate fingers over the ivory wand. "I see. A fine item. Fine indeed. Three thousand quarters of gold would be generous."

"Three thousand! The very ears of Ysiri, god of merchants, burn at such an absurdity! No less than twelve thousand quarters, and I shall have to send my youngest to beg in the streets even at that price!"

Heh. Not quite that bad. Right now, the general campaign accepts that items are for sale from certain guilds and certain temples. Barter is more likely than hard cash; exchanging a wand of fireballs for it's worth in healing spells or potions, or a set of spell scrolls, is the way to go.

In my world, there's a big difference between arcane magics and church magics. The church (theoretically) runs on donations which they (theoretically) share with the poor; many of these donations come from spells cast by priests, but items are fairly rare and would definitely be sold only for vastly inflated sums. Even then, probably only potions would be sold, and more dedicated items (like holy swords and the like) would be kept for the church to use on its own.

The arcanists have no support structure, so they'll sell just about anything. However, they're rare and suspicious of others, so a wizard isn't likely to sell stuff cheaply either.

Magic items are fairly rare in the world; nobody's making many of them these days. The most powerful ones are unique items from ages long since past, whose mythology has changed over the centuries to adapt them to the new times.

Needless to say, my heroes greatly value their magic items. They've never even considered selling them. And there definitely aren't magic shops you can just walk into - an archmage might live in the rear wing of the duke's palace, for example, somewhere you're not going to go without very good excuses.

I actually have a funny story to tell.
The PC's fought an undead demon (Bloodlines adventure in Dungeon), and even though they had to escape, they managed to steal his +2 unholy longsword (disarm specialist in group).
The demon wanted revenge, and he wanted his sword back. To this end, he hired some hobgoblins to purchase it from the PC's. Paying a lot of money, they claimed that they needed it to kill elves in the forest. The neutral players in the group didn't care, and the cleric's protests fell on deaf ears.

The PCs defeated the undead demon and regained the sword. They sell it again. To a blackguard who wants to use it to kill good clerics.

So now they have invented a new money-making plan. Sell magic items, steal it back and sell it again.

It's hilarious actually, but if they go after the blackguard, I will make sure they fail :)
